However, copies can be obtained on the secondary market (review copies, used copies) at substantial reductions. Bookfinder or AddAll turn up some bargains. There is also a remainder website in the UK (don't remember the name at this moment) which sells older publications at a fraction of list price. Someone, please provide the website! Good luck! A review of it will be appearing in Folk Music Journal in the near future. At least two others are currently in preparation. |

I should add that used copies do not appear to be priced at very much less than the current publishers recommended price over here in the UK. Most hover around the £45 - £50 mark. Ashgate Publishing are, I think, principally an academic publishers, hence the pricing. The cheapest price I've managed to find on the net via Abebooks is £38.15 (from the States ... plus around £9 postage, bringing it up little short of the full price). Cheapest new on Amazon is £43.16 incl p&P, cheapest used is £56.20 including p&p !!! |

From: Matthew Edwards Date: 21 Dec 12 - 07:43 PM What Surreysinger modestly omitted to mention is that she and Ralphie Jordan perform an excellent and informative talk on the life and works of Lucy Broadwood, illustrated with songs, and backed up with some in depth research. Having seen this at Bradfield Tradtional Music Weekend I can strongly recommend it. Actually Ashgate sometimes do offer some of their music books for sale at half-price for limited periods, so it could be worth keeping an eye on their website, or even subscribing to their mailing list but you will have to resist the temptation to splash out on books such as 'Men, Masculinity and the Beatles'. You've seen and heard the music- heavy, word-light variety of "Listen and You Shall Hear".I also do talks on her life and work (less music and more talk),the most recent being for Heritage Weekend in Dorking,Surrey, within hailing distance of Lyne House (her home for most of her childhood and early adulthood).Conrad, you may like to find David Gregory's article for the Folk Music Journal entitled "Before the Folk-Song Society: Lucy Broadwood 1884-1897" (easily traceable in search mode - I have tried to provide a link but it doesn't want to play ball). This covers Lucy's early collecting period from age mid 20s to mid 30s, which saw the production of her first two published works, up to the point that the formation of the Folk-Song Society was imminent, and her inter-relationships with fellow collectors of the period. There are also a lot of helpful footnotes which give leads to other articles and papers. |

I agree with the comments regarding Irene, I strongly recommend one of her talks interrupted by some excellent singing of the Lucy Broadwood collection. I had the pleasure as a small boy to visit the Broadwood workshops at Hindhead Surrey and I have never forgotten the experience. Al |

(Dave and I have been associating and doing some work together over the last few years). Is there anything that I can help you with at all Conrad? (I'm none too sure whether you have a general interest or a particularly specific enquiry relating to Lucy or John.) While carrying out research on the Broadwood diaries and papers Dave and I had the pleasure of bumping into Alan Gibbs, a classical musical specialist with a great interest in Holst, who has also been carrying out extensive research on Lucy with a view to producing a biography of her based more on the classical side of her life.I've not been in contact with him lately, so have no idea how close or otherwise he may be to producing his own book on her. |
