We're having a very different experience this year and flying out to New York on New Year's Eve.   Then we have three nights in the city, to explore, and we travel back home in style on the QMII.
Does anyone have any recommendations about what we should on no account miss while in the city? Hoping to meet up with some friends while we're there but open to offers from others ...

Make sure you buy a good life jacket for the return trip, just in case and all that.

That sounds like a wonderful trip. It would be cold, but one thing we really enjoyed were the Circle Line Tours.

Mudcatter Lorcan Otway has a neat, refurbished "speakeasy" and Dan Milner is, or was, at the South Street Seaport which has a museum, etc.

Have fun! Watch out for polar bear families on icebergs!**bg**

Will the department store windows still have their holiday decorations? It costs nothing to look. I've hear Bryant Park is beautiful, too.

Yes, you must meet up with Lorcan. A great guy.

If possible, get to Times Square for the ball drop. The experience is totally tacky and definitely fun. Bring noisemakers. Don't bring fragile instruments. If you are going to be in NYC on New Year's Eve you should experience it at least once in your life, if only to say "I was there, then."

Thanks, guys - will be taking note of all of these. Does Lorcan have a Mudcat handle?

Come prepared to walk more than you may be used to...

South Street Seaport was virtually destroyed by Sandy, I am told. The ships are still there, however.

If you go to Times Square for New Year's Eve, you will be penned into small areas by the NYPD and not allowed to leave until after the ball has dropped. Expect to wet your pants.

Eat in Chinatown. They took a hit from Sandy, too. Maybe the Nom Wah Tea Parlor on Doyers for dim sum. Then an exotic flavor at the Chinatown Ice Cream Factory on Bayard.

The Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center should not be missed. The Holiday Fair in Bryant Park, complete with skating rink, will still be open. The shops aren't cheap, however.

The Circle Line Tour is terrific, but it will be cold. A shorter and cheaper New York Harbor experience may be had by taking the Staten Island Ferry, which is free.

There are a lot of wonderful museums in NYC, but if you are a museum-goer, the Metropolitan Museum is not to be missed. And you only need to pay a dollar to get in, if you wish. You will want to save as much as you can in this expensive city!

Yup, we did the Staten Island Ferry thing. Got off at the other end, bought coffee and Krispy Cremes, then rode back. Great fun, plenty calories, what more could a girl want?

They will let you out of the fences but once you're out, you're out.

If you go to Rock Center, turn around and look up the walkway at Saks to watch the musical snowflake display. Then cross the street to catch their windows in sequence. Go North one block to check out St. Patrick's Cathedral. If you were in town on a Friday evening, you could go to MOMA for free and enjoy the exhibits.

There is soo much to do in this city!

Thanks, guys - as both of us are highly allergic to big crowds I don't think we'll do the Times Square thing, especially as we're flying out on the morning of 31st so midnight in Times Square will be 7.00 am the following day for our body clocks, over 24 hours over the time we'll have got up.
Still mulling over all the various possible activities which are, as you say, many and varied. Probably do a movie sites tour (we did one in San Francisco which was a major highlight of our visit), the Rock and then maybe a museum or two.   Also trying to hook up with some friends.   Will drop Lorcan a PM.

Chinatown sounds good, though.

Oh, and luckily for us the Queen Mary leaves from Brooklyn pier, so with any luck that's still there?

Do not miss Larry (Lorcan)........I wish I were going to NYC because he is the top of my list for a place to go. Do the Ferry.....Every tourist since time began has and it still is fun today.

NYC has way too many places and things and it all depends on what you like. Myself When I was in and out of NYC pretty regularly I always tried to make time for a meal at Katz Deli. Get the Pastrami.....although the Corned Beef has been known to convert lifelong Vegans to meat.

The Circle Line tour doesn't have to be cold, as one can travel below, still with excellent panoramic views from the windows, and the excellent informative commentary is audible throughout the boat. The Circle Line, which I have done twice 20+ years apart, is excellent value and a most informative way to learn about the City, & see many of its most important landmarks.

If you like Art Museums, the Met is of course indispensable; but I would highly recommend the much smaller Frick Collection also, 5th Avenue at 70th St; which you can find details of, incl address etc, in wikipedia. It stands in relation to the Met rather as the Wallace Collection does to the National Gallery in London. The Cloisters is a wonderful Medieval art collection, but rather remotely situated far Uptown so might be a bit inaccessible, esp in winter.

Have a great time. NY probably my favourite city in the whole world.

~Michael~
