Two friends of mine are going on a LONG trip next Autumn, Skarpi. They will visit Russia- where they have been before, Mongolia, China, other places- and Iceland.

Her question: Does Iceland have self-service laundries? Russia does not, it seems.

Skarpi! Laundromats in Russia! Great business opportunity!

Yes, it's Friday night and I have had a few brewskis. Sorry. I'll be on my way soo

A friend told me today that when he visited Bolivia, he was told that it was cheaper to buy new underwear than to do laundry, and he found it to be true : )

Huh? I just nodded off and you woke me. I would like to have some fun as long as it's calm. And I have just done so seeing your posting again. Ebbie, glad to see you not only back but also "threading".

Skarpi... Ya relly should get in on the laundromat stuff. There's coin in it. Yes, poor joke but I try and that's what counts, eh?

Ebbie... yer one of the few that spell my handle with a "g", as it should be, and pronounces, almost, my handle correctly in print. That tells me a lot about you. Not much that I didn't already know, of course. Besides that fact that you are cool on ravens and just plain cool in my books.

Hmmm... I have never said this before. What the hell. Yer worth "coming out". Beside the the reasons I have given over the years for my handle... there is something else. I pronounce my handle gahnu on accounta it sounds like
this.

Yeah, that's the real superhero my cousins named me after. There it is. I said it. I feel relieved after living a lie for these many years.

But, I still reserve the right to claim to be a dumb animal who will kill lions to protect the herd at a moment's notice. That is the true gnu. I think I have proven that over the years, sometimes poorly but with good intention.

Okay, just one more and it's gnightgnu. >;-)

Hostels and campsites are the most likely places to find laundry facilities, according to this website and a few others. http://www.lonelyplanet.com/thorntree/thread.jspa?threadID=1928996

I was in Iceland several years ago but stayed in hotels and did laundry by hand, so I didn't look for laundromats.

I hope Skarpi sees this and can give more complete information.

I was listening to Rick Steves' travel show and he had a guy on who traveled very lightly and washed his clothes in the hotel room sink at night using hotel soap. I tried it a few times. It works if you are in the room for more than 6 hours or if the heat and/or AC are on, for drying.

Skarpi,
Was listening to the C.B.C. radio and they were speaking to a fellow who sell Beer Mitts. Apparently you can wear these mitts and there is a pouch to hold the can. Sounds like a great idea. Are you familiar with this product?

Well... I'll just bet all you have to do is contact the hotels you will be staying at and say you need your laundry done. If they can't manage to accommodate you then you must have said something to piss them off.

Come on now! Surely nobody thinks the Icelanders are that stunned or unaccommodating? I only know one but he seems like a pretty nice guy. And, I'll bet most Icelanders wash their clothes on a regular basis.

No? Huh?

Previous post went off prematurely.

Intended to add:

You should know that there are (at least when I was there) no laundromats in Iceland. You will have to take your laundry in to a shop to have it done, and they are usually not open on weekends.

However, take a look at The Laundromat Cafe:

Laundromat café

Address: Austurstræti 9
Post code: 101 Reykjavík
Tel: 5877555
Website: http://www.thelaundromatcafe.com/ [link failed from the site where I found it, and in preview, but might be good from somewhere Icelandish?]
Bus routes: 1, 3, 6, 11, 12, 13, 14

At the Laundromat Cafe you can do laundry, drink a beer or excellent coffee. This kid friendly café prides itself on its tasty brunch, Sunday pot roasts, alcoholic and coffee beverages, 5000 books (that you can buy or trade), board games, and up-to-date newspapers and magazines.

Opening hours:
Monday - Thursday 8:00 am - 1:00 am
Friday - 8:00 am - 3:00 am
Saturday - 10:00 am - 3:00 am
Sunday - 10:00 am - 1:00 am

Also:

Nordic Visitor: Practical Information says (about 3/4 of the way down on the page):

"LAUNDRY: Self-service laundromats are not common in Iceland, but most hotels (typically 3-star or higher) throughout the country offer some laundry or dry-cleaning services for a moderate fee. In downtown Reykjavík, self-service laundry facilities can be found at the Laundromat Cafe on Austurstræti 9 (for dining guests) or at KEX Hostel on Skúlugata 28 (open to the public)."

No web hits for anything outside Reykjavik.

John
