Subject: HELP Need 'holiday' playlist for work From: Vixen Date: 04 Dec 12 - 12:13 PM Hi Mudcats-- I've got to provide 120 minutes of instrumental holiday music for the (publicly-funded) college where I work. What I'd like are recognizable and tasteful instrumental renditions of secular (e.g. Winter Wonderland), Christian (e.g. O Come All Ye Faithful), Pagan (e.g. Abbot's Bromley), Jewish (e.g. O Hanukkah), and Kwanzaa (???can't seem to find any that aren't for little kids...) I've got a fairly comprehensive collection of instrumental Christmas carols from the middle ages to the 19th century. I've got a few recordings of "pagan" yuletide tunes. What I need are your favorite instrumental renditions of secular, Jewish, and Kwanzaa tunes, hopefully available on iTunes or Amazon, or CD Baby, or some other downloadable location. What do you suggest??? Thanks, V |

Subject: RE: HELP Need 'holiday' playlist for work From: Stilly River Sage Date: 04 Dec 12 - 01:00 PM The last couple of years at my workplace for the staff holiday party one of the employees has set up a Pandora account and put in the type of songs in the list that generate the others. Have you tried that website? I don't use it much, but it seems to be pretty intuitive. You have to be able to stream it from a computer into a sound system. SRS |

Subject: RE: HELP Need 'holiday' playlist for work From: Vixen Date: 04 Dec 12 - 01:14 PM Actually, I hadn't even thought of Pandora...I have it on my phone, but haven't checked out the "holiday" selections...Good idea! Hopefully they have a "culturally diverse midwinter holiday instrumental mix" or something similar... Thanks much! V |

Subject: RE: HELP Need 'holiday' playlist for work From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 05 Dec 12 - 08:40 AM If you are looking for a traditional sound, I suggest Christmas music by Maggie Sansone. She plays hammer dulcimer. On her Ancient Noels recording, she is joined by other instruments to make an interesting mix of fine tunes. For a classical sound, why don't you see what the Boston Pops has produced? Surely they do some holiday music. You could do us a return favor by placing your Amazon order (if any) on a page that gives this site a cut: http://www.amazon.com/?ie=UTF8&%2AVersion%2A=1&tag=themudcatcaf&link_code=hom&%2Aentries%2A=0 |

Subject: RE: HELP Need 'holiday' playlist for work From: Vixen Date: 05 Dec 12 - 09:01 AM Hi Everyone! Thanks for the suggestions--I'll check them out. And I'll definitely order from amazon.mudcat if Amazon has what I need. At this point, can you offer any tune/song names for the Hanukkah and Kwanzaa categories? Thanks again, V |

Subject: RE: HELP Need 'holiday' playlist for work From: Howard Jones Date: 05 Dec 12 - 02:06 PM The Abbotts Bromley Horn Dance is done in September, not Christmas. The idea that it has pagan origins seems to be purely speculation. |

Subject: RE: HELP Need 'holiday' playlist for work From: Genie Date: 06 Dec 12 - 02:30 AM I love the Barenaked Ladies/Sarah Maclachlan medley arrangement of God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen and We Three Kings. I think it could be adapted pretty easily for an instrumental (e.g., piano). If you're using recorded music, I'd suggest some of the holiday selections by Trans Siberian Orchestra. There are also some very nice instrumentals on the Chieftains' album "The Bells Of Dublin," and I think you can find them on YouTube too. Hannukah tunes that will be easily recognizable by anyone who celebrates Hanukkah: Ocho Kandelikas (Ladino/Sephardic) O Hanukkah! My Dreydl Ma'oz Tzur (Rock Of Ages) Mi Y Malel Light One Candle (Peter Yarrow - recorded by PP&M) Sovivon Winter songs that have nothing to do with Christmas: Let It Snow! Marshmallow World Winter Wonderland Frosty The Snowman Baby, It's Cold Outside Sleighride Jingle Bells (Dashing Thru The Snow) Deck the Hall - (an old Welsh Yule - solstice - song that was later incorporated into Christmas celebrations but is really about the turning of the year) And, of course, "My Favorite Things" - especially the jazzy syncopated arrangements. This song is often included on Christmas albums but has nothing to do with Christmas either. "There's No Place Like Home For The Holidays" also is all-inclusive with no reference to Christmas as such |

Subject: RE: HELP Need 'holiday' playlist for work From: GUEST,.gargoyle Date: 06 Dec 12 - 10:51 PM Back from the dentist's office. Great sound through all the office and six different rooms. Questioning what sort of "Muzak " subscription they were subscripted to....there was laugh and a giggle....and a shrug. The office music comes from the staff i -pod collection on a shuffle play. Great music. Good sound system Sincerely, Gargoyle Let Fox and the solicitors work that one out. |

Subject: RE: HELP Need 'holiday' playlist for work From: Vixen Date: 07 Dec 12 - 10:06 AM Hi Everyone! Thanks so much for all the suggestions! I feel comfortable that I can pull something together from my narrow little collection plus all your ideas. I figure I'll enjoy whatever I buy and d/l onto my phone, and the "holiday" party-ers are just listening along with me! V |

Subject: RE: HELP Need 'holiday' playlist for work From: Bettynh Date: 07 Dec 12 - 01:39 PM As for Kwanzaa music, this list seems to indicate that any upbeat African music will do. I'd avoid the Nairobi trio song though. |
