Subject: BS: RI & MA December Trip From: GUEST,LynnT Date: 03 Dec 12 - 06:32 AM OK, you folks did such agreat job advising me on out Nova Scotia trip last August, I would be grateful for your help on a new trip! I find that I will be flying to Rhode Island December 19 for a family event in Newport, then will be left to my own devices that Friday afternoon before making my way to North Hadley MA (near Mt Holyoke) either Friday afternoon or Saturday. I am informed that the trip from Newport to MA will take about 3 hours; I am of two minds whether to get an extra day on my rental car and drive it, or turn the car in and take the bus. Are there interesting sites or events within a reasonable distance of the line between those two places that you would recommend, to influence that decision? To refresh your memory, in addition to my attempts at chantey singing I am a gardener as well as costumer and student of historic cookery, focused on F&I & colonial, but interested in other periods. Many thanks! LynnT |

Subject: RE: BS: RI & MA December Trip From: ChanteyLass Date: 03 Dec 12 - 10:11 PM Your family can of course give you ideas of what to do in and around Newport. My first thought was Pawtucket, RI's Slater Mill, really a complex of three buildings, but except for group tours by appointment it is closed at this time of year. My second thought was Sturbridge Village because you will drive through Sturbridge on Rt. 90, the MA Turnpike, on the way to North Hadley, but Sturbridge Village is closed days at this time of year. It is open for weekend evening lantern light tours. If you want to do that, buy your tickets in advance because those tours are popular (and not cheap). My third and favorite thought is "my" beloved Mystic Seaport in CT which will be open Thursdays-Sundays 10-4 during the days you are in the area. It would mean a slight detour, traveling southwest from Newport but then driving north to North Hadley. If you went directly from Newport to North Hadley, you would drive northwest and then west. If you go to Mystic and then head north, you will avoid the tolls on the MA Pike. More about that below. At this time of year, with its abbreviated schedule, Mystic Seaport has only one sea music performance at 11:15 AM. The same singer does seasonal songs at 1:30 PM. You'll be welcome to sing along at both of these. The Witness to History involves a costumed role player. Also at this time of year there are no cooking demos. The Seaport's daily activity schedule shows lots of things to see and do. http://www.mysticseaport.org/files/site_files/Today_Sheets/2012_TodaySheets/Winter_2012_Today_Sheet.pdf If you decide to go to Mystic on Thursday, Friday, or Saturday, Dec. 20-22 and let me know soon while I have no other plans, I could meet you there and get you in free. I am a member and my level of membership allows me to bring a guest (same or different person) each time I go. Both the Newport Bridge (if you go to Mystic) and the MA Pike (if you don't go to Mystic) use EZPass if you have that. If you go from Newport toward North Hadley, the very short part of the trip between RI/MA 146 and the MA Turnpike can be a bit of a traffic jam. Watch signage closely to get into the lane to turn onto the turnpike. |

Subject: RE: BS: RI & MA December Trip From: katlaughing Date: 03 Dec 12 - 11:23 PM You beat me to them all, ChanteyLass!**big grin** I highly recommend them all, but esp. Sturbridge Village. If you want to travel off the beaten path just a little there is a world-famous exotic plants greenhouse,LOGEE's, in Danielson, CT. Not too far from there is CAPRILANDS, a magical place of herbs, gardens, a Maypole, and high tea. I see they are calling it "America's Herbal Farmstead." Of all the places I miss the most from living back there it is those two places. I had the pleasure of meeting owners at both places...each a beautiful, elderly woman, each dedicating her life to her passion. At Logee's, it was Joy Logee Martin. at Caprilands, Adelma Greneir Simmons (I may have the spelling wrong on the latter name.) We also lived in Northampton aka "NoHo" not too far from N. Hadley. It's a fun place to visit. Have fun! kat |
