Subject: RE: BS: Date to take down the Christmas tree? From: GUEST,CS Date: 02 Dec 12 - 01:56 PM Early in the New Year - 2nd or so of January. Apart from that I think it's good to store the evergreenery to burn on the next fire festival - Candlemass/Imbolc. |

Subject: RE: BS: Date to take down the Christmas tree? From: Janie Date: 02 Dec 12 - 02:13 PM "Officially" on Twelfth Night, complete with Kings Cake and tree burning. Only some say the the King's Cake be baked on Twelfth Night and served the next day as part of the Feast of Epiphany. For myself, my goal with a live tree was to do my best to get it down and out of the house asap, lest it shed all it's needles across the entire house on it's way out the door. |

Subject: RE: BS: Date to take down the Christmas tree? From: Jack the Sailor Date: 02 Dec 12 - 04:29 PM Back home it was Christmas eve to Old Christmas Day 24 Dec to 6 Jan. For Carol the tree went up sooner so for us it is often mid December to first week in January. |

Subject: RE: BS: Date to take down the Christmas tree? From: Raedwulf Date: 02 Dec 12 - 04:53 PM As Janie says, Twelfth Night. I forget whether that means everything comes down on the 6th or 7th; traditionally, in the UK anyway, bad luck ensues if Yuletide decorations are left up after that. |

I seen an entire apartment block burn down cos the tree went up when someone was lightin' his cigar. They are a menace. But this idea of proposin' a date by offerin' to help a gal take down her Christmas tree...I never thought of that ploy. Not bad. I ain't single these days, but if I was, I might try it. - Chongo |

Subject: RE: BS: Date to take down the Christmas tree? From: Tinker Date: 03 Dec 12 - 01:29 PM Due to a variety of health issues we can no longer bring a "live" tree into the house. We strive to have the tree set up by the solstice (my birthday) and down a month later..... |

Subject: RE: BS: Date to take down the Christmas tree? From: Nancy King Date: 03 Dec 12 - 02:52 PM In my family, New Year's Day has always been the time for taking the tree down. My folks always watched the Rose Parade on TV while stowing ornaments in their boxes. I don't care much for the parade, but it still seems to me the right time to do it. My Mom used to say that if you leave it up too long, it isn't special any more. |

Subject: RE: BS: Date to take down the Christmas tree? From: GUEST,Stim Date: 04 Dec 12 - 12:24 AM GUEST CS--keeping dried christmas greenery is a really, really bad idea. A dried Christmas tree will go up in flames almost as quickly as a puddle of gasoline, and it is actually harder to put out. Don't believe me? Check out this Christmas Tree Fire video. When the tree dries out, you need to get it out of the house. If the needles start falling out, or if they break when you bend them, you're in trouble. The tree will usually be ok for about 2 weeks, if you make sure it has plenty of water, but "plenty of water" can be a gallon a day. |

Subject: RE: BS: Date to take down the Christmas tree? From: Musket Date: 05 Dec 12 - 01:03 PM Although I never knew why, we always used to take them down on 6th January, which I knew was Epiphany because it said so on the calendar my Mum kept in the kitchen. I kept to this and still do, although the date for putting them up has altered. As a child, it was the weekend before Xmas. When my children were young, it was normally the weekend before that. Now I am remarried, my wife is used to the first weekend of December, so last Sunday, I was struggling with a tree etc. |

Subject: RE: BS: Date to take down the Christmas tree? From: ragdall Date: 06 Dec 12 - 02:48 AM In years past my husband always insisted that we leave the tree intact until Epiphany. That allowed time for film to be processed, printed, picked up and the results viewed. If the photos didn't turn out well, the tree was still there for a re-enactment. Now that we have digital cameras and instant photos, we're at a loss to know when to take the tree down. A more important question at the moment is, "When shall we drag artificial tree sections down from the roof space, try to remember how to assemble them and figure out all the other hows and wheres needed to end up with an acceptable looking Christmas tree which will remain in a vertical position?" Subject: RE: BS: Date to take down the Christmas tree? From: Midchuck Date: 06 Dec 12 - 07:54 AM With no children at home, and four cats, and a wood stove in the living room, we've given up on having a Christmas tree. The cats would be determined to climb up into it, and could tip it over onto the stove. I suppose that would solve the problem of finding a buyer for this big house and getting the gumption to dispose of our accumulated unneeded junk and move to quarters more suitable for our "declining years." But I'd just as soon find a more traumatic solution, if that's ok... Peter |

Subject: RE: BS: Date to take down the Christmas tree? From: Bee-dubya-ell Date: 06 Dec 12 - 08:41 AM We use a potted live tree, not a cut tree. We don't want to keep it indoors for so long that it starts having health problems due to lack of sunlight. We generally delay bringing it in until around December 21, and have it back outdoors by the 28th. As for Christmas decorations other than the tree itself, they get boxed back up whenever Her Highness gets around to it, which can sometimes be well into the new year. "Honey, is it okay to get rid of these Christmas cards?" is a question I commonly utter in June. And the outdoor Christmas lights stay up year-round because we use them year-round. They're only on the screened porch, and they're stapled inside the room, not to the eaves. They provide a nice uniform low-intensity light that's much more pleasant than a bright, glaring single bulb when we're relaxing out there in the evening. |

Subject: RE: BS: Date to take down the Christmas tree? From: Bat Goddess Date: 06 Dec 12 - 09:48 AM Anytime after New Year's...depends on how energetic I'm feeling. Usually doesn't get undressed all at once and then there's dragging it outside. Been easier the past few years as our trees are about half the size they used to be, just little suckers. Less to decorate, less to schlep. Enough to procrastinate over. Linn |

Subject: RE: BS: Date to take down the Christmas tree? From: JennieG Date: 06 Dec 12 - 08:51 PM Actually......these days we don't have "a tree", I put up a few small table-top trees. All except one are less than 12in tall so they can sit on coffee tables, dining room table, top of my late MIL's sewing cabinet (which has a lovely old Singer machine in it) etc. A glass bowl of coloured glass Christmas tree balls which used to hang on the tree when we had a tree sits on another table. A couple of sparkly gold reindeer make another tableau, and my collection of wombat Christmas ornaments has pride of place. That's enough for two Olde Phartez. Cheers JennieG |
