On another thread, Rap reminded me that today is his Bday, 1835. I fondly remember many hours of reading of his antics and philosophies as a lad. A true entertainer of another age and for all ages. Gentleman and scoudrel, as it suited. A master of prose and wit.

God rest yer soul ya sarcastic *******! And, thanks.

I thoroughly disapprove of duels. I consider them unwise and I know they are dangerous. Also, sinful. If a man should challenge me, I would take him kindly and forgivingly by the hand and lead him to a quiet retired spot and kill him.
--Ol' Sam Clemens, in the story of his car (Auto Biography)

Smithsonian.com has this interesting article on the person who was the model for Tom Sawyer - his name really was Tom Sawyer and he and Twain did some carousing in Virginia City and San Francisco.

There are a few folks here who love Twain's sense of humour and incisive wit. I expect Greg F may be away from his computer just now, but I think this is a birthday he'd celebrate, also.

Happy birthday to Mark (or Samuel) from me, too.

If you ever get to Hartford, CT, be sure to take a tour of the Mark Twain House.

Ditto for Hannibal, Missouri. In fact, there's lots of Twain stuff there. Sorry, but it doesn't impress me -- I grew up 20 miles upriver and, yeah, grew up with it. The stuff that is. Sam was the best writer the US has yet produced...and when we got to drinkin' at Pauline's, could he knock back the beer! I remember one night when...never mind.

Huckleberry Finn is without doubt one of the very greatest novels ever written.
