Subject: RE: BS: Ebbie's back. From: Jack the Sailor Date: 27 Nov 12 - 01:27 PM I sort of come and go as I please. here for a month or two, gone for a month or three. No one misses me. I like it that way. Glad you are back but did not know you were gone. Just thought you had less to say with no election looming. Man that one was a bastard, looming for 4 years thanks to MM of KY et al. Where was I? Oh yeah, welcome back! BTW Where were you? |

Subject: RE: BS: Ebbie's back. From: Ebbie Date: 27 Nov 12 - 01:52 PM You 'guys' are a rare lot. I am back and unscathed. Pretty much. With friends like you -- lol. Seriously, I am fine- and coming to terms with it. So many people lost literally all the possessions they had, it ill behooves me to complain about anything for a long while to come. JtS, on November 5 the apartment building where I lived had a serious fire. The building is concrete so it is still standing but it will probably be demolished soon. At this point the insurance adjusters, et al, are prowling the place. In the meantime I am fat and sassy in the lovely home of KT where I and my little dog are very well cared for, indeed. KT, for those not in the know, is one of those people one may hope to meet only once in one's lifetime. And only then if one is extremely lucky. |

Subject: RE: BS: Ebbie's back. From: Stilly River Sage Date: 27 Nov 12 - 02:06 PM Did you have smoke or water damage or were you able to move things out of the apartment? It's that time of year when people are inclined to send gifts, gently used spare items, etc., so if there is something you can use, please let us know! SRS |
Subject: RE: BS: Ebbie's back. From: Ebbie Date: 27 Nov 12 - 03:25 PM Thanks, Stilly. I am really in no need. The only damage I had in my apartment -at the back of the building and on the top floor- was soot and smoke damage. I saved all my clothing by washing it in detergent and white vinegar. Yesterday I made my final trip and gathered up favorites of my books. I don't know yet if they are salvageable but it is worth a try. I am at the top of the list to get into senior housing and am hoping a space will open soon. The most excellent thing is that no human life was lost, and only one animal - a kitty- succumbed to smoke inhalation. We had a lot of animals there, more than 20. |

Subject: RE: BS: Ebbie's back. From: GUEST,999 Date: 27 Nov 12 - 04:37 PM Ebbie, how did your CDs make out? |
Subject: RE: BS: Ebbie's back. From: Charley Noble Date: 27 Nov 12 - 05:08 PM Ebbie- I must have also missed the post about the fire but it's good to hear that things are going a whole lot better for you. Looking around this office space I'm in, well, it could use a good fire. Way too much stuff piled high on every surface. Cheerily, Charley Noble |

Subject: RE: BS: Ebbie's back. From: Ebbie Date: 27 Nov 12 - 05:18 PM I took all my CDs, Bruce, but at this point I don't know if they are salvageable. Any ideas on how to clean them, keeping in mind that soot is slippery? I know I'll have to be careful not to scratch them but I am wondering if copious amounts of Dawn or some other dishwashing liquid and a soft rage might do the trick. It is odd to me- although I am sure that Maeve and others will understand this - but yesterday the odor in the building was so rank and acrid that the phrase: "...the sour odor of death and decaying things" kept roiling my mind. That is why I decided that I needn't go back, that I was finished with it. I reported to the 'gatekeeper' that everything remaining could go to whomever wanted it, that it would not be considered looting. He told me that there are a couple of people who are salvaging items for a garage sale. That made me feel better; I cannot bear the thought of just dumping once-treasured things in the landfill. |

Subject: RE: BS: Ebbie's back. From: John MacKenzie Date: 27 Nov 12 - 05:32 PM Alcohol might clean your CD's Ebbie Soot is greasy so you need something that will 'cut' the grease. |
Subject: RE: BS: Ebbie's back. From: Bill D Date: 27 Nov 12 - 05:36 PM If CDs are not scratched or warped, they 'should' be salvageable. Try one and see.... dishwashing liquid sounds good, |
Subject: RE: BS: Ebbie's back. From: GUEST,999 Date: 27 Nov 12 - 06:01 PM Dish washing liquid, and unlike records, use a soft cloth and go from the center to the circumference, not around in circles the way one would on a vinyl record. |
Subject: RE: BS: Ebbie's back. From: gnu Date: 27 Nov 12 - 06:07 PM Gosh... I didn't realize the soot would get into CD cases. Good luck, darlin. Let us know what works. |
Subject: RE: BS: Ebbie's back. From: Jack the Sailor Date: 27 Nov 12 - 06:09 PM If the heat hasn't discolored or warped the plastic, it should be OK. |

Subject: RE: BS: Ebbie's back. From: GUEST Date: 27 Nov 12 - 09:08 PM Ebbie! I have been off for a while and did not know about the fire. I am SO glad you are all right! I know it is a huge hassle for you, and a challenging adjustment. It's so good you have KT, bless you both! |
Subject: RE: BS: Ebbie's back. From: Janie Date: 27 Nov 12 - 09:32 PM dishwashing liquid and a soft rage might do the trick.... I dunno, Ebbie, even a soft rage might scratch those CD's. Clean 'em when you are feeling calm and beneficent! Counting blessings is good, as you well know, and it's also ok to acknowledge and feel the losses and the work involved in recovery - but you know that too! Wish we could send a crew to help with all the clean-up, sorting and washing. |

Subject: RE: BS: Ebbie's back. From: Rapparee Date: 27 Nov 12 - 10:50 PM Books.... If they're wet or damp, put a paper towel between each set of pages and monitor them as they dry, changing the paper towels as needed. OR...OR...wrap them tightly in PAPER and stick them in a frost-free freezer for three to six months. Believe it or not, you're freeze-drying them and they'll come out as good as they'll ever get. If they just smell smoky, try misting them gently with Febreze, with the book sitting on its bottom and the pages fanned open. Let them sit this way for a while so the Febreze will dry. |
