Look at the record. They came out of Africa and overran Europe, Asia, and the Americas, not to mention Polynesia and the Pacific islands! They slaughtered animals to extinction and raped the Earth itself.

I was just working with a bloke who would argue with you, Rap!
He's a creationist, and "God made the world about 4000 years ago, including all the fossils, so there is no 'fossil record'!"

Stopped me in my tracks. Dunno how you start to argue with that sort of closed-mindedness.

Well, see, there's this thing about whether God's days are limited to the twenty-four hours that WE consider a day, or are they are on a much grander scale as befits a Deity of His Magnitude and Magnificence? The trouble with fundies is that they try to jam God into the petty little universe that they imagine, but God is Bigger than they can imagine.

Well, anyway, one helluva long time ago, there was this Australopithecine bloke named Adam. And then this chick named Eve came along, and. . . .

As to taking the land, they simply didn't. They travelled across it hunting food, and cannot have made really significant inroads into the animal populations.

There weren't enough of them.

If you listen to the descendants of the indigenes of the Australian and American comtinents, their culture shows many parallels, not least of which, was a relationship with land which didn't relate to owning it.

They considered themselves part of the land and its many species. They owned the clothing they war, the weapons used to hunt, and the materials (sometimes) for shelter.

Only since Darwin have we come to realise that we too are part of the animal kingdom, but we can't it seems give up the idea of personal property as a right.

Multi-person pan-dimensional solipsism rules OK!

You missed a golden opportunity to open his mind, Gurney. Most creationists argue for a creation that happened 6000 years ago.

I love you too, Don. ;-) Actually, I think you've hit the head on the nail in your comment. Virtually ALL the negativity online is a result of various frustrated, angry individuals belittling someone else in order to make themselves feel better. It's an emotional epidemic. Bullies in schools fall into the same pattern of belittling others. Am I belitting them when I point it out, thus falling into the same error myself? Perhaps. Perhaps not. If I were Mark Twain or Bertrand Russell or some other well known savant like that, I'd still probably comment on it anyway.

I normally start out my day by feeling "good". I go online. After awhile I read some really negative, hostile stuff posted by various people here...or on Youtube...their vicious personal attacks on others, their vicious personal attacks on Muslims, Christians, Jews, Blacks, Whites, Germans, Japanese, Republicans, Democrats, southerners, northerners, other posters...whoever they want to belittle....

...and then I don't feel so good anymore. It troubles me. It makes the day a little darker. And that's why I comment on it...because it has caused me a certain amount of sorrow over the general state of human discourse these days.

If you know where the negativity is and you go there anyway then supposedly you know what the problem is, for you at least.

But what should one call heaping another steaming pile of negativity on what already exists? Certainly not intelligent, or friendly or helpful.

Especially on what was before your comments, was a fairly good naturesd joke/gripe thread.

Maybe the problem is not with the Mudcat at all. Maybe it is with you. It seems a little self destructive for you to come to this forum to complain about it and to support the one or two other people who just come here to stir up everybody else.

LH:

You are entirely responsible for turning your sovereign state of awareness over to the stockyards of the Internet and letting them stain your pristine Being with their gross odiferous turbulence. You can regenerate your personal tranquility in an instant, by deciding it so to be. Don't be blaming all those shit-eating Republican ne'er-do-well plutocratic Fascists because you let yourself get upset.

Heh! ;-) Your witty comments are certainly worth consideration, Amos. Yes, I could opt not to expose myself to all this Internet negativity, couldn't I? And if I had a busier life, I probably would so opt, because I'd simply be otherwise occupied. I have way too much spare time on my hands in these "semi-golden" years...

However, I often encounter the negativity online quite unexpectedly, rather than because I'm looking for it. For instance, I go to Youtube to see a video about some historical situation that I find interesting. All well and good. The video itself usually turns out to be well worth seeing.

Below it, however, I find an assortment of raging battles going on between various people I will never meet, all of whom are attempting to psychologically destroy the people they are fighting with. Sad! I've noticed that more and more videos are disallowing comments below the video, and I can see why.

It's like graffiti on buildings, all this negative stuff on the Net. Any available space gets desecrated by a few toxic individuals who have a need to "make their mark". People don't generally dare to behave like that unless they do it sight unseen...with no consequences. That's why the Net has become their playground.

I'm not actually that upset by it....it's not a big enough deal to get that upset about...merely observing it and commenting on it, that's all.

Now, what about those damned Australopithecines? And are they worse than the Neanderthals?

And those early Australians lived a simple life, untrammelled by political wrangling.

I sometimes think the world would be a better place if nobody had ever made the transition to farming and communal life in one spot.

That was the start of owning land. They had to if they wanted to eat the crops that they grew.

Strangely enough, many of those Australian aborigines manage to still live that free life.

I wasn't being specific at all...not about targets or about individuals here. I was demonstrating a principle. Neither am I attacking you or any other individual here, I'm just talking about a principle in human behaviour. I selected a bunch of possible targets at random in order to illustrate that principle. I made the selection of those targets deliberately quite broad and varied to illustrate that principle. Some of those targets indeed have been attacked by various people here at one time or another...but that's not my point. My point is the principle involved.

LH, I was WORKING with him, not on the internet with him. Fixing a pal's leaky windows whilst he was painting them. I made a comment about the way you could see evolution in the way the house was built, extension on modification, when he came out with his belief. Nice guy, just odd, IMO.

I try not to argue with umpires, policemen, or religious beliefs. I just save the arguments for this forum. :-)

DonT, I've had that thought, that farming was the beginning of the transition of ideas, from hunting areas to ownership.
"That's our compound, so the cattle trapped there are OUR cattle!"

You didn't have to argue with Gurney. You don't have to keep telling us about our moral failings while displaying THOSE SAME MORAL FAILINGS YOURSELF!!

People are people. Stronger people displace weaker ones, healthier replace sicker ones. People who have stronger technology, political system, weapons, military strategy, displace those with weaker ones. Until now, until globalization, telecommunications, the united Nations and Public Relations.

Now all bets are off. A baby seal has more protection now than a Celt did in Roman times.
