In my books, this guy.

I saw him live doing a drunk figure skater character and it was beyond real. I thought, "How could anyone DO that?" His many and varied performances after his impressive career in competitive skating in which he was adorned with many championships wins actually, for me, eclipse those international accolades.

World class figure skater? Yeah. Proven. But, in my books, this amazing athelete and artist goes far beyond. He entertains me not just with his skill but with his art. True poetry on ice.

Better than hockey. No shit.

No... I am not gay. Why do you ask?

Hmm. Well, I could hardly even have named a figure skater, let alone have picked a favorite one...but...I gotta admit that guy is a wonderful skater and entertainer, gnu.

Yeah, it's way better than hockey.

The skater who impressed me the most with her skating the first time I saw her was Denise Biellmann.

I named Jean first on my list, LH. True gentleman. And, I'll never forget him putting the puck in the net in one motion from the drop of
a lot of faceoffs. Man, he was fast! Don't think I ever saw him play dirty or fight. That was John's job.

Two favorite figure skaters, actually. 'Course I might be a little prejudiced.

One is my older sister, Mary, who, with her partner, Donald Laws, won a U. S. National Ice Dancing Championship in 1948 (or '49, can't remember for sure). She started out figure skating, but she was always a bit intimidated by the jumps, so she took up ice dancing. After winning the championship, she turned professional and accepted a teaching position with the Toronto figure skating club. There she met a young law student, married him, and they raised a batch of kids in Kingston, Ontario. Her husband, Philip Baker, became a Provincial Judge.

And my little sister, Pat. She was a little sprat when she first started skating and didn't at all mind hurling herself into space, confident that she would land gracefully and without bodily injury. She could handle the wilder jumps like a flea on a hot rock.

Both of my sisters took ballet lessons in addition to skating, and this they found to be a great aid to general gracefulness and in choreographing their programs.

Pat won two Pacific Coast Senior Ladies' figure skating championships, followed by a first place in National Junior Ladies', which qualified her for the 1955 World Championships in Vienna. She placed seventh overall, competing against such powerhouse skaters as Tenley Albright (who won) and Carol Heiss (2nd place). She went on a European tour after the championships, skating exhibitions in Switzerland, Germany, France, and England.

Here she is, on her way back from Europe, just skating for sheer fun in New York City (Rockefeller Center, I think, but I'm not sure). Lotsa people watching her. Patricia Firth

She turned professional and taught figure skating in Portland, Oregon and in Great Falls, Montana, where she got married and raised three kids. She's living in the Seattle area now.

Don Firth

P. S. I think they both got turned on early by Sonja Henie movies.

After experimenting a bit with Google search, I did manage to come up with a couple more pictures. Here's my older sister, Mary, posing with her National Championship trophy in 1948. Mary Firth.

Then a shot of my mother, father, sister Pat, and me arriving back in Seattle after Pat won the Junior National Championship, but before going to Vienna for the World Championships.   CLICKY.

Rather proud of the girls!!

Wow, Don! And, may I be so bold as to say, the frith lasses are SOME GOOD LOOKIN!

Don... "handle the wilder jumps like a flea on a hot rock." Hahahhaa! Love it!

LH... yeah, John Ferguson. Ever see his commercial where he plies bed sheets? Printed. He says that when he wakes up to printed bed sheets, he knows he's not in the hospital. Priceless! Loved one interview... he said that he always swung first... hey, if yer gonna fight, yer gonna fight. I never took my gloves off first... I waited for the other guy to look at me as if he was gonna fight. Same thing but too late. And he smiled.

Now, fact is, for those that detest violence on the ice, as I do, I admired him because he NEVER started a fight... but he finished them. Enforcers are many but John was a gentleman before and after he took his gloves off. Good hockey player too.
