Tom reminded me yesterday that I hadn't posted this and today, well, today sort of got away from me. I left my brain in my sock drawer... But Don Hale emailed me asking if it's on which reminded me I really need to post this! So, here 'tis... The November sea shanty, forebitter, and ballad session will take place this Saturday, November 17th, at The Press Room on Daniel Street, Portsmouth, New Hampshire, from 3:30 to 7:30 PM. Please forgive my late notice -- Don, it's ALWAYS the third Saturday of the month! -- and we hope to see the regulars AND the irregulars there! Total strangers welcome as well. Come sing with us! Charley, I've seen the footage he talks about here. I think you'll find it particularly interesting. From Bill -- "I will be heading for the press room in Portsmouth, NH, today for the shanty sing with my friend Ed Rioux.-- Ed and the Stormy Seas band just finished a CD os sea songs and included is a DVD that shows Ed's father who was a Gloucester fisherman from out O' Gloucester, Mass. in the 1940's.-- Very interesting and historic DVD that is narrated by Ed himself.-- It includes 8mm movies of Ed's father on a Trawler in the 1940's.-- See you all at the Press Room this afternoon." Subject: RE: November Press Room (NH) Shanty Sing From: Bat Goddess Date: 17 Nov 12 - 08:45 PM Really nice session, despite high level of ambient noise plus more noise from a private booking upstairs. (But the band leader came down before the session and told Tom when to expect some competition from upstairs, which was very courteous. As it was, we had no problem singing over the band upstairs which certainly didn't discommode them at all.) We had a couple new young singers, too. I'll post the crew and play list...maybe Monday. Got the host of a local folk show and a sound man coming out tomorrow to interview Tom for the show (originally scheduled a couple days after Tom broke his ankle). Got to spiffify the quarters and scare up a couple more chairs (stowed out of the way of Tom's wheelchair). Linn |

And I don't remember running into Mike (to my left) before; I was delighted to hear him lead my uncle's version of "The Old She-Crab." Susan did a nice rendition of Bob Watson's song "Neptune's Daughter." And I was surprised and delighted to hear the young fella John lead "Auckland to the Bluff" by New Zealand nautical singer Rudy Sunde; I'm about the only person in the States who has recorded that song and he collected it from a group singing it in Texas, and it was my version. Any way it was great good fun, even with all the noise from above and below, and from the kitchen. Cheerily, Charley Noble |

Steve Carrigan came over (with Jim Prendergast running sound and Dave Hallowell taking photographs and video) to interview Tom for his folk show on WSCA, Portsmouth community radio. Dave has been digitizing my collection of recordings of Tom since we got together -- radio shows, concert, festival and gig performances -- and made an extra DVD copy for Steve, to which I added some notes when I did a quick relisten yesterday before the singaround so I could point Steve to some of the best places to look to illustrate (illustrate?!?) the interview. Then, of course, I had to go to my old computer and rescue the j-card files so Steve had song list and commentary... But the session this afternoon was a lot of fun (Jim and I just sat back and listened) as Tom not only related his personal folk history, but filled Steve in on such things as the folk revivals -- British and American, US politics of the 1950s and '60s and how it related to folk music, why some books and LPs (such as "The Merry Muses of Caledonia") could not be legally published before the 1957 Roth Decision. (Well, actually, some of that wasn't recorded; we were educating Steve during a break. He's too young to remember any of it.) Anyway, now I can start recording the facts of yesterday's session...but first, I have to make dinner. Later! Linn |
