Photograph: Cyril Byrne/The Irish Times Related MARY CAROLAN Sean Quinn, once Ireland's richest man but now bankrupt, is beginning a nine-week jail sentence this afternoon. Mr Quinn has decided to begin the term imposed on him now despite the fact he is to appeal to the Supreme Court against findings he acted in outrageous contempt of court orders, his lawyer said. Having been given time to consider the matter, Eugene Grant QC, for Mr Quinn, said his client wanted to begin his jail term now as, while he was maintaining his appeal, he was also conscious of the Supreme Court's recent decision dismissing his son's finding against a three month sentence for contempt. Counsel said Mr Quinn was a 66-year-old grandfather and was anxious to attend a grandchild's christening on December 22nd next but was not eligible for remission as this was a sentence for contempt. He asked that the court agree to release him for that event. Miss Justice Elizabeth Dunne said an application for compassionate release would have to be made to the prison authorities. Miss Justice Dunne earlier said Mr Quinn's contempt was so serious that she could come to no other conclusion that it mandated a term of imprisonment. She could not ignore the extent and degree of contempt by Mr Quinn and, taking all various matters into account, including his health problems, she would impose a nine-week term. |

His biggest one, could have been to listen to whoever it was who recommended removing assets from the jurisdiction. He should have concentrated on blocking , legally impeding and preparing his appeal. There are so many others who are equally deserving of imprisonment but whose lawyers are more adept at such matters. |

Subject: RE: BS: sean quinn 9 weeks in clink From: The Sandman Date: 03 Nov 12 - 08:55 AM I think he should have got 4 years community service, putting him in prison costs money and he has cost the country enough,. he was incompetent as an insurance company,, he got his sums wrong, furthermore he did not create any jobs merely took them from other insurance companies, think about it, there are only a certain amount of people to be insured, it is myth that he created jobs that were not previously there. |

Subject: RE: BS: sean quinn 9 weeks in clink From: Gutcher Date: 03 Nov 12 - 10:44 AM How many Irish bankers were lifted out of their beds and how are the cases against them going? As far as I am aware no banker on this side of the Irish sea received such a rude awakening. |

Subject: RE: BS: sean quinn 9 weeks in clink From: Richard Bridge Date: 03 Nov 12 - 02:38 PM Contempt of court removing assets from the jurisdiction. Ireland should pass retrospective sequestration legislation (like Thatcher did to the NUM) and pursue every red cent around the globe. And Quinn should (a) stay inside until at least 50% has been recovered and (b) pay the costs of collection and his incarceration. |

Subject: RE: BS: sean quinn 9 weeks in clink From: The Sandman Date: 04 Nov 12 - 09:41 AM Richard I think prison is pointless since it costs the taxpayer, i think several years community service appropriate, i would also bring back the stocks, a very suitable and cheap punishment |

Subject: RE: BS: sean quinn 9 weeks in clink From: Fergie Date: 05 Nov 12 - 08:00 AM In my opinion Quinn deserves everything he gets. He and his family gambled big time. They hoped to distort the state of the market and therefore to profit to the tune of billions, but their scheme backfired and bankrupted them. The bank they invested in was on the verge of collapse and the stupid fools in the treasonous Fianna Fail government at the time decided that the bank was too big to fail and issued guarantees. That guarantee is now costing the ordinary Irish taxpayers untold billions, it has brought untold misery to every ordinary citizen of this state. The cost is unemployment, emigration, cutbacks in education, health, reduced incomes, negative equity effecting countless thousands of young couples paying vast sums on mortgages for houses that are now worth one third of what they paid. Houses that will never attain values anywhere close to what they paid for them. And Quinn and family think that they shouldn't have to pay, they are the ones who freely chose to use their assets as collateral for their massive loans to illegally buy shares in the bank. Then when it comes time to pay off their gambling debt they involve themselves in an unlawful scheme to remove their assets so that the taxpayers who were forced to pay for the guarantee on the bank take the full hit and leave the "poor" Quinns holding on to their assets. They gambled, they lose, but you only have to look around this nation to see the misery that has arisen as a result of the greed of all the shisters that were the cheerleaders for the so called Celtic tiger that turned out to be the biggest property bubble ever seen. I'd better stop my missive because I feel the anger rising in me when I think of all the decent honest Irish citizens (including my own children and grandchildren) that will be paying for this debacle for generations to come. Quinn is getting off lightly. Fergus |
