Subject: Carrying Stream Festival 2012 From: Johnny J Date: 25 Oct 12 - 08:11 AM CARRYING STREAM FESTIVAL 2012 Our annual homage to Hamish Henderson takes place once again in November. From The Paddy One Hamish Henderson Festival with international line-up – from Ireland, Denmark and America From 7-14 November, the eleventh Carrying Stream Festival, organised by Edinburgh Folk Club to celebrate and commemorate the great Scottish folklorist, songwriter and poet Hamish Henderson (1919-2002), marks the tenth anniversary since his passing Like its predecessors, the festival presents a broad program me of traditional folk music and song, including Sottish tradition bearers like Elizabeth Stewart, Alison McMorland, Geordie McIntyre, Essie Stewart, Margaret Bennett and Heather Heywood, young and spirited ensemble music with The Shee and Fiona Cuthill & Stevie Lawrence, outstanding songwriting from Nancy Nicolson and England's premier songwriter Allan Taylor. There is a very strong international dimension – from the marvellous Irish fiddle player and singer Niamh Ni Charra to American traditional folk singer Jeff Warner whose songs from the lumber camps, fishing villages and mountain tops of America connect 21st century audiences with the everyday lives – and artistry – of 19th century Americans. On Saturday, 10 November at Summerhall, Danish five-piece 'New Roots' band Himmerland team up with Gavin Pennycook's Celtic Nyckelharpa Project – an encounter that promises a night of musical sparks! A new book – At Hame Wi' Freedom: Essays on Hamish Henderson and the Scottish Folk Revival – from Grace Note Publications in Perthshire –will be published to coincide with the Festival – it will be launched on 8 November at Summerhall. Subject: RE: Carrying Stream Festival 2012 From: GUEST,Fred McCormick Date: 25 Oct 12 - 10:36 AM I can't make that one this year, but I'll certainly have it in next year's diary. Apart from being a celebration of a great icon of Scotland, it's also a damned good lineup. I'm glad to hear about the new book on Hamish. But anyone who hasn't read Tomothy Neat's two volume biography of Henderson really isn't trying! |
