Subject: BS: these new meters From: GUEST,Kendall Date: 23 Oct 12 - 09:39 AM About a year ago the power company installed a new meter that doesn't require a person to come by and read it. It puts out a radio signal that can be read at the company. Ever since then I have had a lot of trouble with my computer and it has killed two printers. A few days ago I noticed that the wall was crumbling exactly behind where the meter is hung. There is white powder on the floor. A technician came and insisted that it is not the meter, yet he could not explain why the paint on that wall is crumbling to dust. Any ideas? |

Subject: RE: BS: these new meters From: Stilly River Sage Date: 23 Oct 12 - 09:45 AM I've had one of those smart meters for years, and there is another one as the water meter. They don't seem to cause any disruption. Good luck sorting out this puzzle! SRS |

Subject: RE: BS: these new meters From: Pete Jennings Date: 23 Oct 12 - 09:46 AM Don't know about the computer/printers, but I can't see the radio signals affecting the wall... Is it the paint or the actual wall that's crumbling, or both? Could be some little critters living behind the meter? |

Subject: RE: BS: these new meters From: Rapparee Date: 23 Oct 12 - 10:07 AM Do you use a wireless printer? Does your computer have a wireless connection card in it? |
|
Subject: RE: BS: these new meters From: maeve Date: 23 Oct 12 - 10:09 AM No problems of any sort from ours, Kendall; neither electrical nor physical. It's very close to our computer equipment. I wonder what other factors may have been at work in your situation? Might moisture be collecting within the wall? |

Subject: RE: BS: these new meters From: kendall Date: 23 Oct 12 - 12:59 PM The wall is dry as a Baptist picnic. |

Subject: RE: BS: these new meters From: maeve Date: 23 Oct 12 - 01:03 PM Sure, but have you looked inside those picnic baskets? |

Subject: RE: BS: these new meters From: Greg F. Date: 23 Oct 12 - 01:15 PM Radio frequency the meters operate on and the low power thay transmit with should have no effect on a computer setup, and certainly have nothing to do with crumbling walls. Look for a water leak. Any other wireless device in the house MIGHT cause computer problems - but you don't say what those "problems" are. More info needed. |

Subject: RE: BS: these new meters From: Jim Dixon Date: 23 Oct 12 - 02:14 PM Is it possible that when they drilled holes to attach your new meter, they didn't seal them well, and now moisture is entering through those holes? |
|
Subject: RE: BS: these new meters From: Crowhugger Date: 23 Oct 12 - 05:28 PM What Jim Dixon said. Or what are the chances they *didn't* damage the vapour barrier? Might be condensation, not a leak. |

Subject: RE: BS: these new meters From: GUEST,999 Date: 23 Oct 12 - 05:43 PM Let the electric company know that you are going to place an ad in your local paper asking if other people have had a similar problem. |

Subject: RE: BS: these new meters From: Rapparee Date: 23 Oct 12 - 06:42 PM Where is the problem part of the wall in relation of other things, like the dryer, the washer, water lines, and so on? Was there anything there in past that might cause the problem? You don't have an insect problem, do you? Is it the wall itself that's flaking to powder or just the paint? Where were the printers located relative to the problem area? |

Subject: RE: BS: these new meters From: Bee-dubya-ell Date: 23 Oct 12 - 07:37 PM It was bound to happen someday, Kendall. You can't live in the same state as Stephen King for that many years and not expect unexplainable weird shit to happen eventually. Maybe it'd be best to just live with the situation. Trying to fix it might only rile them (whatever they are) up. By the way, if you should see a piece of dull silver metal sticking out of the ground in your backyard, don't try to dig it up. |
|
Subject: RE: BS: these new meters From: kendall Date: 23 Oct 12 - 08:45 PM The computer and the printer are both just 4 feet from the crumbly wall. Again, there is no sign of water at all. The tech suggested I vacuum the area and watch to see if it comes back. The washer and dryer are 30 feet from the trouble area, and they are down cellar. |

Subject: RE: BS: these new meters From: gnu Date: 23 Oct 12 - 09:48 PM maeve... "Sure, but have you looked inside those picnic baskets?" Hahahahahahaahhehehehehehehehehehehehahahahahahahahahaaaa! Best one I ever heard from ye, lass! You truly splits my sides! Darlin dear that you are. (Sorry folks... might be a kinda private thing, but ya gotta know just what what I know about such a nice person ta unterstand why I am STILL chuckling. Thanks for the laughs, m!) |

Subject: RE: BS: these new meters From: Rapparee Date: 24 Oct 12 - 11:35 AM I was wondering if vibrations from the washer or dryer might have been transmitted up a wall and caused the problem, especially if the wall is plastered or is dry wall covered with that stuff they use to cover drywall. I think that cleaning it up and seeing what happens and what is going on at the time is a good idea. It could just be the Cthulu wants out of the wall, you know. |

Subject: RE: BS: these new meters From: GUEST,olddude Date: 24 Oct 12 - 10:47 PM I think Don nailed it with the drilling ... you have condensation now. The radio frequency meter should not interfere with anything. Had one for three years now and nothing like that and I am wireless from servers to notebooks to Ipad etc.. They drilled into something they should not and didn't seal it right |

Subject: RE: BS: these new meters From: Amos Date: 24 Oct 12 - 10:47 PM Don't suppose you got those Plaster Termites, now, do ya? If its interior moisture it could wander over from anywhere, of course, no telling. Tiny roof gap, wind-blown rain in an air vent, or what have you. I like the Weird Shit explanation meself... |

Subject: RE: BS: these new meters From: gnu Date: 25 Oct 12 - 09:13 PM A ROOF LEAK? Oh me nerves! As an engineer, roof leaks are cause for sleepless nights. I once had one plague me for three months before I found it... over two hundred feet from the ceiling stain. A door seal failure that led into a crack in the concrete sill that led to... that led to... that led to... nightmares. And it only happened when the rain and wind were juuuust right... on my building that is at lest six hours away by plane and rental car. It was sheer hell. |
