Subject: BS: Why do half my posts vanish?
From: Little Hawk
Date: 20 Oct 12 - 11:03 AM

I often discover...sometimes a day later...that a lengthy post I wrote in response to something Bobert or Don Firth or someone else never went through for some reason. It apparently vanished into thin air when I hit the "Submit Message" button, because it's not there. This happens a lot! I'd say that it happens maybe 1/3 to 1/2 of the time.

Why??????????

Anyone else having this problem?

If I don't remember to block and save the post before I hit "Submit Message", just in case, it's quite likely that I'll never see it again. This means a lot of hard thinking and studious typing ends up in the the dustbin of eternity, never to be read by anyone! (sob!)

Oh, the injustice of it all!!!!!!!!!!!

Like I said, anyone else having this problem?

And will THIS post ever be read? Gosh, I better block and save it right NOW to be sure...

If you don't check as soon as you sent it to see if it took, then you will lose the opportunity to use the "back" button and retrieve it (copy or Control A and then Control C) then refreshing the thread (F5) and pasting and resending. It happens enough that I always look now to see if it was published, and if it is an important post I copy and paste it into notepad so I don't lose it before it takes in the system.

It may happen more often than you realize, but you only notice it on the important posts. :)

This problem has been intermittent at Mudcat for years...I have posted about it a dozen times.. with ways to avoid or mitigate it.

However, I don't LOSE the post as long as I don't close the browser or shut down Windows. My browser, Opera, keeps the text in the box while I am my current online session. If I post 12 times in a session, I can go 'back' to any one of them. Of course, if I post again to #3 without going FORWARD and opening it, the posts after #3 are lost.
Of course, if I don't look to see that my post took, it doesn't help much.

So.... IF you post and nothing changes- meaning that thread doesn't come to the top, go **back**, copy the post (if you haven't already) and hit **reload** in your browser...not *refresh* in Mudcat. Then reopen the thread and repost. It puts a new copy of the Mudcat 'home' page in your browser's cache. This has never failed for me.

sometimes if i am tired for some reason my brain guides the mouse to the HOME click below the submit very frustrating when i realise next day my brilliantly witty post did not get sent.

Mind you sometimes that is a blessing in disguise since something that seemed good when tired was perhaps actually best left unsaid. :)

It seems to happen quite often. I try to make a point of checking and reposting if necessary.

I suspect it may be something to do with two people posting at the same time. Perhaps a mudelf can enlighten us.

'cos you're half pissed maybe:-)

One reason is that websites such as Facebook use 'enter' to post rather that hitting a submit button. So you automatically hit enter and nothing happens.

Ones which I am particularly concerned not to lose, I "Select All, Copy, & Paste" into a World Book or Text Edit new sheet and leave it on Desktop. Then, even if Back Button doesn't work, it can be copied & pasted into Reply To Thread again. Usually works this second time.

But doesn't LH [doesn't everybody] immediately go back to menu to check that thread has risen to top, blue, to indicate a new posting, and then check that one's own just submitted is there? If not, then no wonder you get some surprises at a later date!

Is it just you, Little Hawk, or are Shane and Chongo having the problem too? I shudder to think that we've missed 1/3 to 1/2 of their posts. I know that Chongo might check and repost, but Shane is very much, "I said it once, why say it again?"

I've had posts disappear that woulda made yer hair curl and yer teeth chatter, Stim. As for Shane, that moron could be missin' his own head when he walked out the door and probably never even notice. He would not last long in the jungle. Maybe 5 or 10 minutes.

It happens. I've submitted a post three times and only had the fourth one take by exiting the thread reloading the forum (or refreshing it in the browser) and posting a fourth time. Up to this point, it has been an irritation and a frustration but now I want to thank the designers for any little thing that makes it harder for Shame and Chonbo.

I don't know, Chongo. You have to do something really stupid to last only 5-10 minutes in the jungle, and Shane is not that creative.

Also, predators rely on a sight, smell, and sounds and he is pretty frightening in all of those areas. He has an eerie glow from all the years in the Blind River Uranium Mines(no one knows why he was there, he was not a miner) and most known species avoid him.

I have positively identified the NUMBER ONE cause of lost posts for me.

When I've spent a longer than usual time composing, editing, proofing, and viewing an especially brilliant and fascinating post, THE CAT gets bored, decides he's hungry, and walks across the keyboard to get my attention.

Sometimes I just have to reboot, since he finds keys I had no idea existed, and the computer does things I didn't know it could do.

It will be noted that we have three cats, and only one, THE CAT, does this. He's old and probably senile. I have considered whether he might not get much older, but he's sort of a favorite for HER. (Fortunately there's only one HER in the house.)

LH's problem is most likely 'cause one of the weiners is chewing on the modem cable. Peanut butter on a power cord might solve his problem, if it encouraged the weiner to chew it instead, but unfortunately THE CAT has fearsome "protection" so my problem appears to have no readily available resolution. Attempts to train HER to feed THE CAT on a more regular schedule have been completely unsuccessful.

John

Try changing a word or two here and there...

ALWAYS compose your post.. no matter the length... NO matter the length... and copy it before you hit submit. This has been a problem for YEARS and has been addressed before.

The simultaneous posting syndrome mentioned above is the most likely culprit in THIS particular case as LH does not do drugs, does not drink devil beverages and does shun women of ill repute... or so he says... >;-)

Me? When I do same, I can't be sure if it was me or poor timing. Usually me, I expect.

It is one of those dear old bugs in the Mudcat script. I have the feeling it has something to do with other postings to the same thread in the time between our downloading the text (the URL ending with the number of messages) and submitting our message.

Joe Offer usually tells us that the reason is our browser caches, and thus it is our own fault. I am not convinced.

Anyway, most of us do as indicated above: keep the text, and repost it until it arrives.

My own guess is that some of the problems may come from "pack collisions" when the 'cat gets multiple connection attempts at once. Depending on buffer sizes/space available sometimes one gets dropped.

Another likely cause most times may be because a "relay" server somewhere between the one posting and the 'cat may drop or delay things due to the same kind of traffic. With DDOS attacks so popular currently, it's safe to assume that somebody, somewhere is trying to block some site somewhere else at any given time, and all the servers in everyone's paths to the sites they're trying to use are quite likely to be uselessly overloaded - somewhere.

The 'net is also overburdened with excessive and often badly designed JScript and experimental "HTML6" that cause a lot of really stupid errors, delays, and misdirections; and Adobe, via both Reader and Flash, both overused, distributes a very large percentage of malware currently being circulated, so infections are "everywhere." The result is that the whole internet is so full of trash that selecting dinner from the menu is a lot like scrounging in a garbage dump. (Just remember that even the hogs won't eat the tomatoes in the bottom of the trough.)

The point here is that every connection to mudcat probably goes through multiple links and relays to get back and forth. My personal impression is that most of the "faults" I see are somewhere in the in-between (although I haven't been bothered enough to look for much proof of it).

John

You're right, Grishka. There ought to be something in the design of the Mudcat Website that prevents the loss of posts, but we're working with software from the 1990s and we have to do the preventive work ourselves. We can justifiably blame Mudcat for its inadequacy and lament the loss of the posts, or perhaps we can put the blame on Mudcat moderators for censoring all our posts; or we can do what it takes to prevent the loss.

So....all you have to do is get into the habit of saving every post before you submit it, and then checking to make sure it "took." Here's the procedure:
  • To save a post, all you have to do is [CTRL-A] to highlight it, and [CTRL-C] top copy it to your computer's clipboard.
  • Then check the thread from the Forum Menu to make sure it posted.
  • If it didn't, reload the tread by hitting the F5 button on your keyboard.
  • Then paste [CTRL-V] the text into the posting box and submit again. If you've reloaded the page with the F5 key, the message will most probably post, but be sure to check it before you copy something else into your clipboard. If you did NOT reload your page, you will most likely have the same problem over and over again.

The problem isn't frequent enough for me to recommend reloading the page before every post you make, but it's an idea.

So, this is like using a condom. If you use it beforehand, it's a good preventive measure and it isn't very difficult to do. If you don't use "precautions" before you post, then you can use the "back" button on your browser and you can usually get back to the text you typed. If you simply "submit" that text again, it will most probably fail to post again. You have to copy the text, reload the page, and then paste the text into the box and submit.

So, remember:

Condoms

-Joe-

Sorry. Joe but... you know why that struck me funny.

Grishka... if you asked me to tell you how to fix your stalling engine I would say, "sight unseen", change out the fuel filter to start with, on accounta that is the cheapest thing that might be a problem. Joe was right to suggest the fuel filter first.

As far as you implying Joe is accusing you of being at fault, I kinda doubt that. Or was that a joke?

Actually, it's not the posts themselves vanishing that bothers me. It's the disappearance of the thoughts within the posts. I can post a series of well thought out ideas one day, reread them the next day, and discover that what I had thought were clear, succinct ruminations have disappeared and been replaced by trite, moronic balderdash.

Gnu, now that the thread has drifted into joking, I do not think a long serious reply would be adequate - even if I knew exactly what the problem is, which I do not.

Just one thing: this is not about accusing anyone, but, as you observed yourself, about earlier excuses.

"Blaming" or "own fault" must be understood technically, not morally. Joe wrote above what had to be written. I have never demanded that the bug be fixed, there are more pressing problems (such as the "codepage" issue on which Max worked a couple of months ago, apparently without success).

Do we have a place, analogous to Artful's codepage permathread, where all information (- guesswork only if necessary -) and instructions about the OP's problem are collected? We could post a link to that whenever the problem is mentioned. -

Here is the complete text of BWL's message above:

What LH meant, Pete Jennings, was this: He don't subscribe to Ayn Rand's neo-fascist social philosophy. She is a bit to the Right of most people you could care to mention and she is the darlin' of the most extreme rightwing people in the Republican Party. LH bein' pretty much to the Left, this puts 'em in what amounts to 2 different worlds, politically speakin'.

Gnu, I should have written that I was responding to your message of 20 Oct 12 - 08:29 PM; you had posted another message in the meantime. In particular, I wanted to rebuff your accusation that I accused Joe of accusing anyone. Never mind, not really important.

The second half of my message was a reaction to BWL's post, the "you" in the last sentence was probably aimed at LH.

Sorry for the confusion; next time I'll try to be more concise.

Grishka... I would certainly appreciate you doing so as I am easily confused. >;-)
