Subject: BS: Malala Yousafzai From: Richard Bridge Date: 14 Oct 12 - 06:18 AM It is encouraging that 50 Pakistani Muslim clerics have issued a Fatwa against the gunmen who shot Malala for supporting rights to education for girls and young women. Two things are discouraging. First the Fatwa does not extend to the the entirety of the particular taliban group (Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan) that has claimed responsibility, nor indeed to the entire taliban. Second, the demonstrations against the gunmen/group/taliban have been small, scattered, and muted - whereas the recent demonstrations against the whole of America, even against the whole of the West and/or all non-Muslims have been widespread, huge, and sensationalist. Perhaps we can hope for greater progress soon. Perhaps. |

Subject: RE: BS: Malala Yousafzai From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 14 Oct 12 - 12:00 PM By the nature of things, it's not possible to find a Taliban embassy to rally outside in protest. There's no natural focus for protests against terrorist acts when they aren't carried out by governments and suchlike. |

Subject: RE: BS: Malala Yousafzai From: Don Firth Date: 14 Oct 12 - 03:33 PM According to the Taliban, Allah wants HER (CLICKY) dead. She committed the sin of complaining, in a letter to the Pakistani president, when the Taliban took over the Swat Valley community where she lives and imposed sharia law, forcing the men to grow beards and not allowing women to leave the house. They also began blowing up schools, especially ones that taught girls Malala Yousafzai also had the audacity to speak out in favor of educating girls. Two Taliban goons shot her! She's 14 years old. Fortunately, she is still alive! They have removed the bullet from her neck where the doctors were afraid her spinal cord might have been damaged, but soon found that she can move her legs. They have her on a ventilator, but found that she can breathe on her own. Apparemtly the full extent of her injuries is not known yet. Saudi Arabia has a plane standing by, fitted out as a flying ambulance complete with six doctors. ready to fly her anyplace in the world where she can receive the best medical care should her current doctors deem this necessary. In this morning's news, tens of thousands of Pakistanis have demonstrated in Karachi, protesting the assault on Malala. Don Firth |

Subject: RE: BS: Malala Yousafzai From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 14 Oct 12 - 06:25 PM Here's a link Karachi says yes to Malala, no to Taliban" - and interestingly enough it's to the "Tehran Times" - Iran has never been keen on the Taliban (still less on Al Qaeda): "Tens of thousands of Pakistanis held a demonstration in Karachi on Sunday in support of a 14-year-old human rights campaigner and peace activist shot and critically wounded by the Taliban for promoting girls' education and criticizing the extremist group." |

Subject: RE: BS: Malala Yousafzai From: SINSULL Date: 15 Oct 12 - 10:56 AM She has been airlifted to a UK hospital. I wonder if she would prefer to remain in England in relative safety or return to fight the good battle. An incredibly brave young woman. She as a symbol has the potential to bring down the taliban. Subject: RE: BS: Malala Yousafzai From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 15 Oct 12 - 02:43 PM Even if she would prefer to stay in England - which of course shouldn't be presumed to be the case - it can't be assumed that she and her family would be allowed to stay. There have been plenty of cases of people being deported from the UK to face the threat of death in the places they come from. For example: Deportation of asylum seekers |

Subject: RE: BS: Malala Yousafzai From: Don Firth Date: 15 Oct 12 - 03:10 PM It should not be that difficult to transport someone in need of sanctuary to some unknown location and keep them safe there. I believe that the fundamental evil of the Taliban—and its cowardice—is graphically revealed by this attack on young Malala. I hope and pray for her full recovery, and that she goes on being a powerful spokesperson against the brutality of these people and for the cause of women in Islamic countries. Considering the level of world-wide outrage at this cowardly act, the whole world should know now what the Taliban really is! Despite their fanaticism, Allah wants no part of them! Don Firth |
