Subject: The Beatles at Elgin Folk Club From: Johnny J Date: 05 Oct 12 - 12:09 PM I bet you didn't know they played there! http://tworedshoes.files.wordpress.com/2008/09/ttrs_beatles.jpg However, those who were around in those days will know that this was the way dance venues etc managed to get around the licensing laws when the pubs used to close at 10pm. They would apply for a "special permission" to remain open later, eg Midnight or even 1 am on the pretext that some club or organisation wished to organise a function on the premises. As long as there were at least one or two representatives of the "club" there, the rest of the punters could come from anywhere. As I recall, there would be some quite obscure and unbelievable oganisations staging "nights out" in The Highlands. You will see that one of the Elgin "events" was presented by "The Lossiemouth Racing Pigeon Association".... :-) By all accounts, promoter Albert Bonici was less than impressed by our lovable "Mop Tops" and had advised then "I'll make sure you never play in Elgin again" True enough, they never did. :-)) |
