Subject: RE: BS: Found this in the dirt in Colorado From: EBarnacle Date: 28 Sep 12 - 10:13 PM Various tokens, including whorehouse tokens used to be used on the frontier in areas where there was a lack of currency. In essence, it was coinage minted to fill a need and was often accepted locally as legal tender. Your local coin dealer can certainly tell you more. |

Subject: RE: BS: Found this in the dirt in Colorado From: EBarnacle Date: 28 Sep 12 - 10:18 PM Oh yeah, don't let him buy it, just tell you about it and the approximate retail value. This is a real collectable. |

Subject: RE: BS: Found this in the dirt in Colorado From: JohnInKansas Date: 28 Sep 12 - 11:37 PM Although it was not unknown for "establishments" in the old West (and old elsewheres) to hand out "coins" somewhat similar to what you found, the crisp impression (and modern font?) suggest that this is a souvenier of a kind widely available in shops wherever tourists might think they're cute. At present, they are produced prolifically and widely distributed. Not being one inclined toward such tawdry and tacky souveniers, I've passed on the coins, but do have a belt buckle purchased ca. 1963 with a "reclining lady" a. la. the paintings above the back mirror (over the bar) in any number of historic "places of recreation" that is inscribed with the message: "Good for one free red-eye and ride" and "Rosie's Saloon." And I've worn out three very sturdy belts, wearing the buckle daily ever since. (I've only had three occasions when someone asked "what does that say on your belt buckle?" Two, the ladies, giggled, but didn't blush; and the one guy said "where can I get one of those?) [Sheplers still had them the last time I was in there, but that was at least a decade ago.] John |

Subject: RE: BS: Found this in the dirt in Colorado From: John MacKenzie Date: 29 Sep 12 - 03:14 AM Reminds me of that old song. If I were a Carpenter, I'd screw you to the bed. Wasn't it written by Tim Hardon? |

Subject: RE: BS: Found this in the dirt in Colorado From: Pete Jennings Date: 29 Sep 12 - 10:15 AM Good point about the font, JIK. It has the classic characteristics of Helvetica - the curly foot to the botton of the R, the dropped horizontal line of the A and the square(ish) head of the comma. Although sans serif fonts have been widely used since the early 19th century, Helvetica wasn't developed until 1957 (Wiki), so you could well be right about it being a modern souvenier. Still, sounds as if it could be worth checking with a dealer... Pete |

Subject: RE: BS: Found this in the dirt in Colorado From: JohnInKansas Date: 29 Sep 12 - 06:41 PM So I guess I'll stick with my 50+ year old belt buckle, instead of collecting the coins to wear out my pockets. (?). John |

Subject: RE: BS: Found this in the dirt in Colorado From: frogprince Date: 29 Sep 12 - 09:13 PM Maybe, maybe not...if'n they's young ones, and they growed fast, they could be organically grown. But if the lady's got a few miles on the odeometer... What year did they start pumpin' sillycone in them things? Back when that image woulda dated to, did they stuff 'em with horse hair? |

Subject: RE: BS: Found this in the dirt in Colorado From: gnu Date: 29 Sep 12 - 09:40 PM Knock, knock.... Emmerson who? Emmerson nice tits! Well, it's better if you get the whole email joke with the pictures. BTW, if you did get that email, #2 does not need to bare all to turn me on. Not even a smile in that pic and I am a goner and the never happens without a smile. If I was 20 years youger and a million richer, I would chase her. Say... any of ye lads ever find that older women whose pose for internut "pics" smile a lot more instead of trying to look sultry or slutty? I should open an academy of naked photography for budding photogs and models. I'll call it "Peg" and the slogan will be "It all comes back to you." (music ref... Steely Dan). It'll be my big debut. And, of course, win the lotto tonight. The lotto might be a more reasonable objective. Then, I could go fishin with Dan or chase #2 even at my age! Flies - tits - flies - tits... FISH OR BAIT HOOK?! Dan... can I bring a buddy fishin? |

Subject: RE: BS: Found this in the dirt in Colorado From: EBarnacle Date: 29 Sep 12 - 10:22 PM While I usually agree with John, on this one I disagree. Our perusal of one side of a token is not enough to truly evaluate the object. The only person who can really judge authenticity is an expert in the field. Perusal of any guide book of coins and tokens will show many different type faces. The place you found it militates against it being in such good condition but does not rule it out. The language suggests that it may be a modern "replica" but, again, does not rule out the possibility of it being a valid original. |
|
Subject: RE: BS: Found this in the dirt in Colorado From: Gurney Date: 29 Sep 12 - 10:37 PM EB, I suspect it will no longer be valid ;-) |

Subject: RE: BS: Found this in the dirt in Colorado From: olddude Date: 02 Oct 12 - 03:11 PM and how do you know of this place froggie ??? |
|
Subject: RE: BS: Found this in the dirt in Colorado From: frogprince Date: 02 Oct 12 - 07:51 PM On the way from Vegas to Death Valley, April a year back. Stopped at a general store just before the California line. Then looked around and realized what the business operating behind the store was. So far as the merchandise there, I had a supply of real good quality with me already, so didn't shop for any. |

Subject: RE: BS: Found this in the dirt in Colorado From: GUEST,olddude Date: 02 Oct 12 - 09:14 PM I know the place, Inside they got a picture of you holding a gold Visa card with the numbers all worn off of it ... You are a legend Froggie. By the Lavender sends her regards :-) |
|
Subject: RE: BS: Found this in the dirt in Colorado From: frogprince Date: 02 Oct 12 - 10:39 PM The numbers may be all worn off of it, but you can still see the name on it. When I mentioned that I know you, they said you forgot it there, and they didn't have your address, so they asked if I would get it back to you. Sorry I forgot for so long, but I'll put it in the mail tomorrow. |

Subject: RE: BS: Found this in the dirt in Colorado From: JohnInKansas Date: 03 Oct 12 - 12:44 AM For a quick look, you might check at the nearest couple of souvenir shops. If you don't find one just like it, or one similar enough to tell you what kind of thing it is by the time you've checked a couple or three shops, then it might be worth consulting a dealer for an expert opinion. For the recollection that yours is a "found treasure" the monetary - or even the historical - value may not be worth much more to you than the simple fact that you found it where you didn't expect it. When you can't remember and treasure the memories of the little things life gives you, it all gets pretty flat and boring. John |

Subject: RE: BS: Found this in the dirt in Colorado From: GUEST,Chongo Chimp Date: 03 Oct 12 - 07:28 PM What the-----??? YOU gotta be jokin'! Not a chance. "Spiffy duds" is just old time slang that means I am dressin' well, that's all. There's a site on the Net somewhere that has all the lingo from the 40's world of film noire, that bein' the way I still like to talk. I think it's called "Roscoes, Slugs, and Dames" or somethin' like that. You go there and you can learn all the tough-guy talk that gunsels, molls, proskirts, and grifters used back when a man was a man and an ape was an ape and people wore good-lookin' hats when they went out on the street. Either that or just watch the old black and white movies from that era...most of all, them that star Humphrey Bogart. - Chongo |
