At present, they are produced prolifically and widely distributed. Not being one inclined toward such tawdry and tacky souveniers, I've passed on the coins, but do have a belt buckle purchased ca. 1963 with a "reclining lady" a. la. the paintings above the back mirror (over the bar) in any number of historic "places of recreation" that is inscribed with the message: "Good for one free red-eye and ride" and "Rosie's Saloon." And I've worn out three very sturdy belts, wearing the buckle daily ever since. (I've only had three occasions when someone asked "what does that say on your belt buckle?" Two, the ladies, giggled, but didn't blush; and the one guy said "where can I get one of those?) [Sheplers still had them the last time I was in there, but that was at least a decade ago.] John |

It has the classic characteristics of Helvetica - the curly foot to the botton of the R, the dropped horizontal line of the A and the square(ish) head of the comma. Although sans serif fonts have been widely used since the early 19th century, Helvetica wasn't developed until 1957 (Wiki), so you could well be right about it being a modern souvenier. Still, sounds as if it could be worth checking with a dealer... Pete |

Our perusal of one side of a token is not enough to truly evaluate the object. The only person who can really judge authenticity is an expert in the field. Perusal of any guide book of coins and tokens will show many different type faces. The place you found it militates against it being in such good condition but does not rule it out. The language suggests that it may be a modern "replica" but, again, does not rule out the possibility of it being a valid original. |

If you don't find one just like it, or one similar enough to tell you what kind of thing it is by the time you've checked a couple or three shops, then it might be worth consulting a dealer for an expert opinion. For the recollection that yours is a "found treasure" the monetary - or even the historical - value may not be worth much more to you than the simple fact that you found it where you didn't expect it. When you can't remember and treasure the memories of the little things life gives you, it all gets pretty flat and boring. John |
