Ah, what bad luck she had! Because of her mother-in-law, her husband killed her. 3 Fifth of May Avenue: why are you in mourning? Because of Belem's death , killed while she was sleeping. 4 Belem was very pretty, "pretty as a picture;" (1 killed by her husband after ten days of marriage. 5 Belem told her servant: "Do not be late." DE BELEM GALINDO (El crimen de la tragedia de *Belen) 1 En la población de Nieves ha fallecido Belem, el diecinueve de octubre del año de ochenta y tres 2 ¡Pobrecita de Belem, ah, qué suerte le tocó! Que por lengua de su suegra su marido la mató. 3 Calle del Cinco de Mayo, ¿por qué estás enlutecida? Por la muerte de Belem, que la mataron dormida. 4 Belem era muy bonita, muy bonita y retratada, y la mató su marido a los diez días de casada. 5 Belem le dijo a la criada: -No te vayas a tardar-. La criada se dilató porque tuvo que lavar. 6 -Belem, te vengo a decir, te vengo yo a noticiar: Don Marcos te quiere mucho, te da plata que gastar. 7 Belem le dice a la suegra: -No venga aquí a molestar, que, mire que no soy de ésas, no me doy ese lugar. 8 -Anda, Belem tan ingrata, tú me la vas a pagar; viniendo Hipólito, mi hijo, algo le voy a contar. 9 Sale Belem con la criada a dar la vuelta al jardín, no sabiendo la inocente que esa noche iba a morir. 10 La criada dice a Belem: -¿Por qué llora sin cesar? -Le boca me sabe a sangre y el corazón a puñal. 11 ¡ Pobre de Belem Galindo, cómo fué desventurada! Su marido la mató A los diez días de casada. 12 ¡Qué Hipólito tan ingrato! ¡Qué Mendoza tan felón! Le dió un tiro a Belemcita en el mero corazón. 13 Luego que ya la mató se agachaba y la veía y le decía: -¡Belemcita, pedazo del alma mía! 14 Belem estaba tendita en una mesa cuadrada, Hipólito allí en la calle, que lo aprehendió la Montada. 15 Llegaron los policías y a Mendoza lo aprehendieron, también vino el señor juez y el cadáver recogieron. 16 Lleváronse ¡ay! a Belem en una triste camilla, y luego en el hospital le hicieron la aptosía . 17 Su blanco pecho le abrieron para verle el corazón, destrozado lo tenía. ¡Qué Hipólito tan traidor! 18 Cuando Hipólito naciío, ¿qué planeta reinaría? Su madre estaría en pecado o no lo bautizaría. 19 Ya Belem está en el gloria dándole cuenta al Creador, Hipólito en el Juzgado dando su declaración. 20 La declaración que ha dado: -No, señor, no la he matado, estando los dos durmiendo la pistola ha disparado. 21 Ya Belem está en el gloria, Hipólito en el presidio, ya el juez en el tribunal leyéndole su martirio. 22 Ya con está me despido con mi sombrero de lado: buenas nunca son las suegras ni figuradas en barro. 23 Ya con ésta me despido al dar la vuelta a un llantén, aquí se acaban cantando versos de María Belem. *Often spelled Belen, especially on posada illustrations and recordings.
