Subject: Origins: old Scots song, From: GUEST,Roscoe Date: 17 Sep 12 - 10:25 AM I am searching for an old song my grandfather used to sing when I was a boy that went something along the lines of bonny laddie gang awa'... there's nae loch ness monster there (ava)?... for it's only old MacDougal.... it is a rather old song, perhaps the 20s or 30s. Has anyone ever heard this before? |

But maybe you'll be helped in your search by spelling it Auchenshuggle! (It is/was a real place, on the outskirts of Glasgow and I remember as a teenager in the 1950's seeing tramcars heading along Argyle Street eastwards, destination 'Auchenshuggle': it always made me laugh!) |

Subject: RE: Origins: old Scots song, Auchenshuggal, Nessie From: Anne Neilson Date: 18 Sep 12 - 04:08 AM Oh, the romance of a name! I woke up this morning with a song running through my head -- popular in Glasgow folk clubs in the 60's, it was a parody of the pop song "Last Train to San Fernando". 'Last tram tae Auchenshuggle, Last tram tae Auchenshuggle -- If you miss this one, there'll never be another one! Bee dee bee dee bom bom -- tae Auchenshuggle.' (Apologies for being so unhelpful, but if you wake up with a smile on your face, it's surely worth sharing....) |

Subject: RE: Origins: old Scots song, Auchenshuggal, Nessie From: Mr Red Date: 18 Sep 12 - 05:09 AM FWIW Kerry Fletcher in a workshop on French dance used the word "shuggle" to refer to a move and explained it as a Scots word meaning to do something akin to a cross between sashay/chassis & shuffle. |
