Subject: Did John Denver play a 7 string guitar ? From: GUEST,MikeL2 Date: 14 Sep 12 - 03:22 PM Hi I was skimming through the net to search for the chords for the song Darcy Farrow - I remember John Denver did it on his first ( I think ) Album. I found the words and chords below -: <"Darcy Farrow Gilette/Campbell sung by J.Denver G A D G D A D D G D 1. Where the wal-ker runs down thru the Carson Valley Plain 2. Her voice was as sweet as the sugar can-dy 4. But her pony did stumble and she did fall Dmaj7 e7 A A9 A 1. there lived a maiden Darcy Farrow was her name. 2. Her touch was as soft as a bed of goose down 4. her dying touched the hearts of us one and all D G D 1. The daughter of Old Dundee and fair one was she 2. her eyes shone bright like the pretty lights 4. Young Vandy in his pain put a bullet thru his brain G A D G D A D 1. the sweetest flower that bloomed over the range. 2. that shine in the night out of Yerrington town. 4. we buried them togeher as the snow began to fall. D D/C G e D 3. She was courted by young Vandamere 5. They sing of Darcy Farrow where the Truckee runs thru Dmaj7 e7 A A9 A 3. a fine lad was he as I am to hear. 5. they sing of her beauty in Virginia City, too. D D/C G e D 3. He gave her silver rings and la- cy things 5. At dusky sun-down to her name they drink a round G A D G D A D 3. she promised to wed before the snows came that year 5. and to young Van-dy whose love was true."> No problem with that except at the top left under the Title Darcy Farrow are the letters GADGDAD. This can't be right can it?? Cheers MikeL2 |

Subject: RE: Did John Denver play a 7 string guitar ? From: Harmonium Hero Date: 14 Sep 12 - 03:45 PM I haven't heard the record for years, and can't remember how the introduction went, but suspect that those are the chords for the introduction. Or maybe not. Perhaps somebody who has the record could check it out when they get a minute... John Kelly. |

Subject: RE: Did John Denver play a 7 string guitar ? From: Peter Butler Date: 14 Sep 12 - 04:15 PM Perhaps GADGDAD is the chord progression of the intro before the singing starts. |

Subject: RE: Did John Denver play a 7 string guitar ? From: Marc Bernier Date: 14 Sep 12 - 05:16 PM Chords to the intro would be my guess. I don't have a JD recording infront of me, but that tuning you suggest would sound alot like DADGAD. And I don't recall him sounding like a DADGAD player. |

G A D G D A D 3. she promised to wed before the snows came that year 5. and to young Van-dy whose love was true."> |

Subject: RE: Did John Denver play a 7 string guitar ? From: MikeL2 Date: 15 Sep 12 - 06:28 AM hi Guys Many thanks for your interesting comments. Gnu....thanks for that but it doesn't really help me. Peter, Stim & GUEST appear to have cracked it. They are the chords for the verse ending bars. However I have been doing a bit of research myself and have found this link that confirms this. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sRqU-CEN-D4 It also shows that John was using some form of D tuning not standard tuning. ?? I always though that this was one of John's own compositions but note from Guest's excellent link that it was written by Steve Gillette and Tom Campbell. Shows that even after all these years I am still learning. Many thanks again. MikeL2 |

Subject: RE: Did John Denver play a 7 string guitar ? From: Bernard Date: 15 Sep 12 - 09:05 AM It's simply 'dropped D' - the bass 'E' tuned down to 'D'. He used it a lot, even on his 12-string - Annie's Song, for example . The video is a bit fuzzy, but eventually you get a reasonably good shot of the bass run. |
