...moving day...

Yup, after living in Richmond, Va. for 20 years my ex and 4 month old son Will (Ben to everyone else, don't ask...) and I were headed for a mountain holler in Jefferson County, Wes Ginny...

As this was before my Betty Ford days I had one boat load of stuff to move from my 1920s 5 bedroom house in South Richmond to the new-to-us house on the mountain which was right at 1300 or so square feet with a 12 X 10 storage shed...

In the 2 years leading up to the move I had a VW repair, parts and restoration business... My parts department was a 1963 GMC school bus with all the seats gone and shelves built down both sides... I also owned an array of other vehicles which we will get to shortly...

The plan was to have everything loaded by beer o'clock, Septmeber 10th and leave out after dark when it was cooler as the GMC bus not only overheated on occasion but was also not exactly legal... I mean, I had the title but that's about it...

Now moving the Bobert, his ex, his 4 month old dog, 2 cats, 2 dogs and Bobert's massive collection of junk, furniture, collections of old toasters, attack vents, cornice and vehicles wasn't quite up there with the pyramids... But not far behind...

So at approximately 9:00 pm on September 10th the strangest assortment of people and vehicles pulled away from that 5 bedroom house... In the lead was my buddy, Jeff... He was driving the rented 26 foot U-Haul which was not only overloaded in terms of weight but also packed tighter than tree bark...

Behind Jeff was Bo... He was driving my 1960 VW panel van (bus) packed with all my mechanics tools, jacks, compressor and pulling a homemade utility trailer with more of my scavenged architectural pieces...

Behind Bo was me... I'll return to me...

Behind me was my ex in her 1962 VW with a cloth sunroof, my son, two cats and one dog...

Behind her was my other Jeff buddy driving my 1974 GMC 3/4 ton truck with a granny-gear-4-speed and it was also severely overloaded...

Behind other Jeff was my buddy, Larry, driving my 1965 Karmann Ghia with half a dozen extension ladders strapped to an OEM (rare) roof rack and the rest of the car filled with contractors bags of clothes...

Me??? I was sandwiched in the middle to hide a bus that any cop in his right mind would want to pull over and check out... I knew this was a possibility so we planned the route to take all back roads...

Might of fact, it wasn't just the bus... The entire caravan was pretty gypsified...

So, the bus did fairly well... I had the other dog with me and a cooler of beer to keep me entertained... I don't think it hit 55 mph once but held a decent 50-52 mph, didn't overheat once and...

...about 6 1/2 hours later the ragtag caravan pulled into the long driveway which led back to my poor brother's farm...

The ex, the son and I crashed in my poor brother's guest room and everyone else crashed in his pool house, which BTW, was pretty nice...

The following day was Part 2 as the caravan tempted fate in the heat and daylight and again using the back roads drove some 50 miles to go 25 miles but ended up at the new-to-us house with out incident...

All in all, it was a slobber-knocker of a move but could have been worse... When I think back on it I go, "Man, that was crazy... You could have had the entire caravan busted and impounded in some county impound lot and you and all yer buddies in jail" but, hey, Lord looks after fools, kids and drunks so I reckon we had...

...triple coverage...

B~

I wasn't planned to be this interesting, Eb...

The beauty of it is that if I had it to do all over there's at least a 50% chance that I would have at least taken the steps to get the school bus/parts department legal...

Once you're IN Wes Ginny, they don't pay a whole lot of attention.

This is just as nice, Bill... Nicer in some ways... Milder winters... No 31" snow falls...

Right... I hear it DOES get a mite windy at times, though.
