Subject: Folklore: Non-English Napoleonic Songs From: SeaCanary Date: 12 Jul 12 - 07:54 AM There are a few songs in English about Napoleon; The Bonny Bunch O' Roses, The Green Linnet and Boney Was A Warrior come immediately to mind. Are there any songs in something other than English? |

Subject: RE: Non-English Napoleonic Songs From: Owen Woodson Date: 12 Jul 12 - 12:11 PM Sorry but this is about as vague as it can get. There's an LP of Cajun music which includes a song in French about Napoleon trying to recruit Cajun soldiers for the French army. According to the song, for which I would doubt there's any historical precedent, they tell him where to stuff his offer. The track includes a bit of an interview, also in French, in which the singer explains this and says the song can't be true because they would never have treated Napoleon like that. The LP was issued sometime in the 1970s or early '80s on an American label; I think possibly on Rounder. Does this ring any bells with anyone else? |

Subject: RE: Non-English Napoleonic Songs From: Ernest Date: 12 Jul 12 - 01:25 PM Lützows wilde verwegene Jagd Apparently the biggest success of Lützow was to recruit Theodor Körner who wrote that sond - their military accomplishments were anything but significant.... |

Subject: RE: Non-English Napoleonic Songs From: SeaCanary Date: 12 Jul 12 - 01:55 PM OMG!! I wanted to sing some of this. My ignorance of French is only exceeded by my ignorance of German. (On the other hand, I can get lots of help with Spanish.) Clearly I didn't think this through. Well, actually I was hoping for a URL or maybe getting a copy of that record of Cajun music Owen Woodson referred to. Is there any hope for me? |

Subject: RE: Non-English Napoleonic Songs From: Steve Gardham Date: 12 Jul 12 - 04:22 PM Jim Reading between the lines I suspect the OP doesn't want any of the songs in the many varieties of the English language, but I'd be very surprised if there weren't any at all in either Scots or Irish Gaelic. |
