Subject: RE: BS: Articulate.. From: Jeri Date: 03 Jul 12 - 08:55 AM I find I speak like the people I interact with, (And no, I don't generally arrange it as "with whom I interact.) I can speak better than I do. I distinctly remember, when I was about 13 years old, adding "ain't" to my vocabulary, along with verb/noun atrocities. My best friend spoke that way. I became a g-dropper, and while "ain't" and "it don't" have gone away (except for effect), I've let the g's go. Speech is social. I doesn't talk that way, but it don't mean I can't enjoy a fancy talker. (I do, in fact, LOVE the way some people around here "speak".) I tries to be perspicacious like that. |

Subject: RE: BS: Articulate.. From: Richard Bridge Date: 03 Jul 12 - 08:58 AM I am trying to learn Ongey and am having great difficulty with the overlaps between: izzzit; innit; and true dat. Subject: RE: BS: Articulate.. From: GUEST,999 Date: 03 Jul 12 - 10:15 AM There is a substantial difference between calling someone a bastard and saying he was begat on a duchess by a head waiter. There are occasions for both. The question is one of appropriateness and timing. I'm willing to slip into various speech patterns depending on who I'm speaking with, but I draw the like at 'I seen it'. That is an abomination. |

Subject: RE: BS: Articulate.. From: Bat Goddess Date: 03 Jul 12 - 01:46 PM Back in the '80s WBZ radio (Boston, MA) was interviewing longtime Boston politician and socially conservative Boston City Council member Albert L. "Dapper" O'Neil. He was ALWAYS Dapper O'Neil, never Albert O'Neil. The interviewer queried him on the origins of his nickname and he said that, while he grew up in a very poor family, his mother always made sure he looked "articulate"... Ayuh. That he was. Linn |

Subject: RE: BS: Articulate.. From: Amos Date: 03 Jul 12 - 02:32 PM I find it is a sorry fact That those with whom I interact Whether alone or through a Mic Are what I end up sounding like! And if in far-advanced lubricity The result of this extreme plasticity Is royal or peasant, stout or slim, Everyone thinks I's jes' lak HIM! Subject: RE: BS: Articulate.. From: Bill D Date: 03 Jul 12 - 04:02 PM Do 'some' groups revel and exult in being almost incomprehensible to other groups? It sure seems like that at times. Subject: RE: BS: Articulate.. From: Amos Date: 03 Jul 12 - 04:24 PM "I want to say..." is a pretty widely used circumlocution, these days. It is sometimes a way of adding feeling to what you are about to say, but it strikes me as a dodge to avoid owning the process of choosing what to say in the first place. In my book, you say what you want, as long as it isn't going to cause any harm. You don't flap about saying you want to say it. A |

Subject: RE: BS: Articulate.. From: Ebbie Date: 03 Jul 12 - 05:27 PM Total lurch here: I like most dogs. Instinctively and whole-heartedly. But there is one dog I currently know that has something wrong with it, imo. At music one night one musician allowed him to jump on his lap where he seemed content. Then suddenly my friend arose, dashing the dog to the floor. The dog had squatted and peed on his lap. WTH? This is not a puppy that had gotten excited but a grown dog. (He is a pure-bred Pug, if that matters.) Oh. It does feel good, articulating does. |
