Subject: Egypt - frying pan or fire? From: Richard Bridge Date: 25 Jun 12 - 03:29 AM http://www.nytimes.com/2012/06/25/world/middleeast/mohamed-morsi-of-muslim-brotherhood-declared-as-egypts-president.html?pagewan Note that Mr Morsi's personal opinion is that only male Muslims should hold office. I hope this ends well, but I have some doubts. |

Subject: RE: Egypt - frying pan or fire? From: Little Hawk Date: 25 Jun 12 - 03:25 PM Wouldn't that be nice! And I'd like to be 25 years old again too. The Egyptian Army has thrown the populace a crumb by admitting that Morsi won the election, but they've still got their hands on the rest of the loaf of bread. |

Subject: RE: Egypt - frying pan or fire? From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 25 Jun 12 - 04:40 PM Morsi is an engineering graduate from UCLA. Engineers by nature are conservative, so he will be accepted by the business community, but probably won't address the needs of the poorer Egyptians or farmers. Little Hawk's assessment is probably correct. The army and conservative business leaders will continue to lead Egypt, making a few concessions to keep things under control. |

Subject: RE: Egypt - frying pan or fire? From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 25 Jun 12 - 06:44 PM "Note that Mr Morsi's personal opinion is that only male Muslims should hold office." Is that actually accurate? He evidently argued the case that only male Muslims should hold office as president, but that's not quite the same thing. "Hold office" is a much broader term than just the office of president. And he is quoted as saying "We are all equal in rights, and we all have duties towards this homeland", which may be flannel of course (like just about anything any politician says), but is not in itself discouraging. The pity is that it appears pretty likely that most Egyptians didn't want either of the final two candidates. Rather like the time in 2002 the French were presented with the alternative of Chirac or Le Pen - "Vote for the crook, not the fascist." |

Subject: RE: Egypt - frying pan or fire? From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 27 Jun 12 - 12:32 PM Mohamed Morsi to pick woman and Christian as Egypt's vice-presidents "Mohamed Morsi's first appointments as president-elect of Egypt will be a woman and a Coptic Christian, his spokesman has told the Guardian, as he moves to allay fears of the Muslim Brotherhood. Sameh el-Essawy (the spokseman) said that although the names of the two choices had not been finalised, they would be Morsi's two vice-presidents. |

Subject: RE: Egypt - frying pan or fire? From: Stringsinger Date: 27 Jun 12 - 12:55 PM The mistake was ceding power to the military. The people and the army are not of "one hand". Democracy is not a military concept. |

Subject: RE: Egypt - frying pan or fire? From: akenaton Date: 28 Jun 12 - 02:54 AM Never heard of "democracy from the barrel of a gun"? No?......well thats mighty strange! Our rulers never act in the interests of democracy, but in the interests of this most undemocratic of systems. As I said at the beginning of the "Arab Spring" we have enabled an Islamist axis to be constructed, and will live to regret it. Whether what is to come will prove benificial to humanity in the long term remains to be seen, but the West is weak for the first time and at the mercy of powers which do not understand the meaning of "mercy" All brought about by our greed and stupidity. |

Subject: RE: Egypt - frying pan or fire? From: Richard Bridge Date: 28 Jun 12 - 03:38 AM To put it mildly - I'm not at all convinced that that is a fair representation of the Islamic religion. But I am somewhat worried. |
