Subject: RE: A very moving performance says Kendall From: catspaw49 Date: 23 Jun 12 - 07:45 PM Gotta' agree about the whistle Jacqui.....also the friggin' bagpipes. It could have been worse though......I mean if I was there in person, that would definitely be worse! AG is a nice tune but it must be to the bagpipes what "Lady of Spain" is to the accordion. How come pipers never play "My Ding-a-Ling" or "Rave On?" Then there's the words which say: Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound, That saved a wretch like me.... Sweet sound? Bagpipes? Sweet humpin' Jesus, pipes sound like someone is strangling 50 African Gray Parrots at the same time! They need to be played outdoors....atop a cliff face.......Facing the ocean........in Greenland........ Supper is ready but this has put me off my feed................... Spaw |
|
Subject: RE: A very moving performance says Kendall From: kendall Date: 23 Jun 12 - 08:13 PM Don't knock the pipes man! Sure they are limited in range, but they are not about the music as much as the feeling. The sound of the highland pipes make me home sick for Scotland. (Past life experience) The penny whistle sucked. He was damn good on it but they were both out of place. I always have a problem with musicians who play as if it was all about them instead of the music. WE ARE CONDUCTORS, NOT THE FREEKIN TRAIN! |
|
Subject: RE: A very moving performance says Kendall From: gnu Date: 23 Jun 12 - 08:22 PM The whistle was the best part. What really sucked was the lack of a Rhan. You people don't shite about tunes. >;-) |

Subject: RE: A very moving performance says Kendall From: catspaw49 Date: 23 Jun 12 - 08:36 PM Had a friend who fished with his bagpipes. He'd jump in and tootle away underwater for about 30 seconds and 25 or 30 dead fish would float to the surface. HE'd been using dynamite but this worked better except that the locals who never complained before, started bitching about the gawdawful screeching...... Spaw |

Subject: RE: A very moving performance says Kendall From: catspaw49 Date: 23 Jun 12 - 08:58 PM And it was a moving performance to be truthful. I moved my bowels twice immediately after I watched it. Plus there are some piping groups trying newer music. Some works and some doesn't. I heard the Scottish Pipe version of the Rolling Stone's "Hey! You! Get Off of My Cloud," which is titled, Hey! Macleod! Get Off of My Ewe." Spaw |

Subject: RE: A very moving performance says Kendall From: Beer Date: 23 Jun 12 - 09:27 PM O.K. Sounds as if Kendall's thread is going downhill. So here is my take. "FUCKING A PLUS" Kendall. Adrien |
|
Subject: RE: A very moving performance says Kendall From: catspaw49 Date: 23 Jun 12 - 09:40 PM Fucking A plus what? Downhill Beer? Downhill? Can you imagine a column of pipers going downhill? The lead guy trips and they all tumble down to the bottom with the pipes screeching tunelessly (their natural condition) while the drummers are all smiles since this is as close to on tempo they have ever heard a pipes group since forever............ Spaw |

Subject: RE: A very moving performance says Kendall From: sapper82 Date: 24 Jun 12 - 04:33 AM Not to my taste, far too glitzy for that, but one must admit, he's one hell of a bloody showman!! |

Subject: RE: A very moving performance says Kendall From: Roger the Skiffler Date: 24 Jun 12 - 05:51 AM Amazing venue- somewhere in the Netherlands (hence the orange favours & ties?). Herself assisted at a funeral in the local church a couple of years ago. The deceased was apparently a local record producer. The MC invited people up into the choir stalls to sing "Amazing Grace" a capella -lots of gospel singers, mostly Afro-Caribbean, some of whom were probably well-known in the business- she said she'd never heard anything so awesome. Subject: RE: A very moving performance says Kendall From: stallion Date: 24 Jun 12 - 05:52 AM I was in a pipe band (scouts) and as we grew up the lads became the leaders and we moved on, one of the younger pipers grew into the pipe majors job and he used to play "little old wine drinker me" and others in the pub in the evening, quite amazing. |

Subject: RE: A very moving performance says Kendall From: GUEST,999 Date: 24 Jun 12 - 10:46 AM The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards did it, and this one is a close second. I agree about the whistle player--send him to Coventry (or something like that). |

Subject: RE: A very moving performance says Kendall From: GUEST,999 Date: 24 Jun 12 - 10:55 AM As for you people insulting highland pipes: There are and that's all I have to say to YOU! |
|
Subject: RE: A very moving performance says Kendall From: CET Date: 24 Jun 12 - 01:39 PM Spaw's unoriginal and unamusing criticisms notwithstanding, there really is a lot to dislike about this performance. For one thing that silly prat Andre Rieu, a civilian, saluted the Pipe Major bareheaded. And we seem to agree about the whistle player. And yet ... The band was really good, and probably raised a lump in the throats of quite a few people who might not admit it. Kendall was right. It was a moving performance -doesn't mean I'm going to rush out and buy tickets to the next Andre Rieu concert. |
|
Subject: RE: A very moving performance says Kendall From: CET Date: 24 Jun 12 - 04:38 PM OK, 50 African Grey parrots being strangled at the same time is pretty funny. It just has nothing to do with piping. |

Subject: RE: A very moving performance says Kendall From: catspaw49 Date: 24 Jun 12 - 04:55 PM Thanks....but I really liked the fishing one best..............Okay, I'll leave now. I have some wholesome, mediocre, shit to attend to and evening is coming........................ Spaw |

Subject: RE: A very moving performance says Kendall From: Leadfingers Date: 24 Jun 12 - 04:59 PM Obviously my education is sadly lacking - Who IS Andre Rieu ? And who was the Poseur with the Generation Whistle ? and who was the lass on the Pipes ? Though NOT knowing id never going to worry me ! |

Subject: RE: A very moving performance says Kendall From: catspaw49 Date: 25 Jun 12 - 01:33 AM Are they still using bagpipes at Guantanamo? There was some holdup at first as they didn't have any U.S.Marines trained in them. Then they realized it didn't matter and wasn't really worth the money anyway. They figured one screeching squawk was as good as another.................. Spaw |

Subject: RE: A very moving performance says Kendall From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 25 Jun 12 - 03:05 PM Thanks for the link, Kendall. I like the pipes, but I agree with Spaw that they don't belong indoors. But perhaps an arena as big as that doesn't actually count as indoors. I dislike "Amazing Grace," with its drab tune and truckling words. I've told my husband that if it's played at my funeral, I will come back and haunt him. |
|
Subject: RE: A very moving performance says Kendall From: SINSULL Date: 25 Jun 12 - 04:33 PM I love "Amazing Grace". Simple and good and true - there you go. But I prefer a lone piper to a production number. Of course, I relate to and enjoy Spaw's humor. So what do I know. SINS |
|
Subject: RE: A very moving performance says Kendall From: kendall Date: 25 Jun 12 - 07:37 PM That song is so over done I could live forever and not hear it again. There is just something about the highland pipes that stir my soul. They played Scotland the Brave well, I thought. |

Subject: RE: A very moving performance says Kendall From: Bugsy Date: 25 Jun 12 - 07:58 PM I LOVE the Bagpipes. Coundn't eat a whole set though. Cheers Bugsy |

Subject: RE: A very moving performance says Kendall From: catspaw49 Date: 25 Jun 12 - 09:58 PM You can get a half rack with sauce for about 8 bucks around here Bugsy so you can have room for a small accordion casserole on the side. One place serves them in a crisp Bodhran topped with ground concertina crumbles.......Top off the evening with a nice recorder flambe..........Boner Peeteep! Spaw |

Subject: RE: A very moving performance says Kendall From: Richard Atkins Date: 25 Jun 12 - 10:10 PM Hi Kendall So glad you found Andre Riew on your side of the pond ,shame on me for not showing you his Dublin concert on your visit to us! May others on U Tube enjoy his entainment for the audiance and not hlmself. |

Subject: RE: A very moving performance says Kendall From: catspaw49 Date: 26 Jun 12 - 03:31 PM Hey Bugsy!!! I just saw a new dish on sale at the "Broil-N-Bake Bagpipe Cafe." Rolled and sliced bag sliced thinly and sauteed with ground drones.........Now there's some serious eating for only $4.95! Kendall, could I ship you some? Spaw |
|
Subject: RE: A very moving performance says Kendall From: EBarnacle Date: 26 Jun 12 - 10:49 PM Just getting 4 or 5 bagpipe teams up there working in unison was a feat in itself. The whistle was a side show and was actually overkill. Would it have sounded better without the whistle? I dunno, depends on the sound guy(s). |

Subject: RE: A very moving performance says Kendall From: Bugsy Date: 26 Jun 12 - 11:10 PM Enough of this talk of Bagpipe recipes 'Spaw! You've put me off my tin whistle omelette! CHeers Bugsy |

Subject: RE: A very moving performance says Kendall From: catspaw49 Date: 27 Jun 12 - 12:24 AM Boy, I used to love a good whistle omelette but then I saw a film about how they remove the mold build up and I just couldn't do them anymore. Course if we knew what was in most of those instruments we'd never touch 'em............ Spaw |
