Subject: BS: Programme on Deptford (UK TV) From: Will Fly Date: 06 Jun 12 - 05:02 PM Just watched a great programme on BBC1 (UK TV) - all about how the city planners of the 40s and 50s substituted high rise for Victorian areas - and screwed the community in the process. Well worth a watch. |

Subject: RE: BS: Programme on Deptford (UK TV) From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 07 Jun 12 - 02:29 PM Beautiful heartbreaking programme. It'd be a mistake to think that the slash and burn approach is a thing of the past. Any time a shop falls vacan the assumption is that everything should be gutted, and replaced by some shiny new bit of tat, and thesame goes for any factory or public buiding. The idea that it's possible to change what needs to be changed and keep what can still be used and improve it is almost unheard of when it comes to anything built in the past century. There have alwaysbeen some planners and architects who see things differently and have managed to help provide places that meet human needs far better than the high-rise neo-slums which were thrown up by their contemporaries. I'm lucky enough to live in such a place. |
