Subject: BS: growing grumpy growing old From: Megan L Date: 21 May 12 - 12:31 PM Having looked at the recent selection of threads I am left wondering if it has become de rigeur to become morose and bad tempered with a huge chip on your shoulder as you get older? My mum taught me you find what you look for so Iusually look for the good in people or the best in situations. I'd rather grow naughty than old. I'd rather look forward than back. I'd rather spread mirth than misery I'd rather engender hope than despair. So is it mandatory to see the worst in everyone and everything and be sure that your opinion is the only valid one? |

Subject: RE: BS: growing grumpy growing old From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 21 May 12 - 04:08 PM Sometimes a person is lonesome and just wants somebody to talk to. Agree with them, then add to the conversation. Some disagreeable posts come from people who've had too much to drink. It helps to figure that out. (See if you can figure out the local time when an outrageous poster posted. If it was after 11 pm, drink seems likely.) Some threads are a mix of the useful and the obnoxious. Try to think of the obnoxious people as being off in a corner of a big room, arguing while others conduct pleasant discussion. Bear in mind that some grumpy old farts started out life as cranky babies, grew into sullen youth, and passed through morose middle age before getting where they are today. |

Subject: RE: BS: growing grumpy growing old From: Brian May Date: 21 May 12 - 04:46 PM EXCUSE ME - I really resent any possible assertion that my particular grumpiness comes from booze. I have worked very hard to perfect being incredibly grumpy, especially on days with a 'y' in them. As for 'cranky babies, sullen youth and morose middle age' where the hell were you? Have you been stalking me all these years . . . COME ON SHOW yourself! By but there are some miserable sods on Mudcat, I'd agree with you there. Have fun |

Subject: RE: BS: growing grumpy growing old From: JennieG Date: 21 May 12 - 05:18 PM Somewhere I read that as we age, we become the person we were always meant to be.....so perhaps those who have become grumpy old men and women were always meant to be that way but were too polite, or felt too held back by circumstances, to show it earlier? Cheers JennieG.....Olde Pharte and proud of it |

Subject: RE: BS: growing grumpy growing old From: Bill D Date: 21 May 12 - 07:48 PM I have led a good life full of peace and quiet, Now I shall have an old age full of rum and riot; Yes, I have been a good lad, careful and artistic; Now I shall have an old age, coarse and anarchistic. Once I paid my taxes and followed every rule; Banker, boss, and bureaucrat thought me a willing tool; I voted Democratic and paid the church its due; Now all those swine will have to find some other chump to screw. Of interest, banks and credit, insurance, tax and rent, Of lawyers, agents, generals and clerics I repent. With this (action here flashing a certain finger) for corporations and scorn for those elected, (Bruce Phillips) I shall be an old bum, loved but unrespected. |

Subject: RE: BS: growing grumpy growing old From: Rapparee Date: 21 May 12 - 10:12 PM There is also a chance that the person is suffering from a psychological disorder, such as a post-combat syndrome. Yeah, you'll find that hard to believe, but when someone has "been there" and "seen the elephant" comes home and sees "civilians" doing stupid things that in other circumstances could get you and others killed they might voice their opinions on it. I don't think that's often the case here, however. |

Subject: RE: BS: growing grumpy growing old From: MGM·Lion Date: 22 May 12 - 12:07 AM And I gave up drink 10 years ago when I was 70. I just have the good fortune not to like alcohol any more. So if I get ratty with somebody on here, it's because they deserve it, not because I have been drinking. In the main, though, I am known on this forum for my sweet and ❂-y temperament ~~ R-n't I! 〠☺〠~M~〠☺〠 |

Subject: RE: BS: growing grumpy growing old From: Brian May Date: 22 May 12 - 02:37 AM Joe F Funnily enough, the family consensus was that our grand daughter would be calling me 'Grumps' - an accolade no doubt. Athur Itus Would love to but No 1 daughter returns from New Zealand with above said grand daughter on Monday morning, so live in Chez Maze is manic. Hope you're doing well. I would however make a point of emerging for MWR or Mr Whaley and Fletcher (at any time). Take care |

Subject: RE: BS: growing grumpy growing old From: Will Fly Date: 22 May 12 - 03:51 AM Grumpy? Moi? Here at Chateau Fly, all is sweetness and light. Young girls in diaphanous things run to me and hug me to their bosoms. Old girls in long skirts and pointy hats hug me to their besoms. Young men doff their hats to me. Old men buy me drinks. My wine cellar is currently overflowing with full bottles. My music room is overflowing with guitars. The sun is shining and the forecast weather for today is 24C and solid sunshine - whoopee! And I've just made a nice profit on some eBay sales. Well, that's me sorted - the rest of you can piss off. |

Subject: RE: BS: growing grumpy growing old From: ChanteyLass Date: 22 May 12 - 05:03 PM Some Mudcatters are insomniacs. I think that has been discussed in other threads. I am one. While I am by nature a night owl, sometimes I cannot relax even when it is much later than I usually stay awake. At other times I sleep briefly, wake up, and cannot get back to sleep. Under those circumstances, I probably am grumpy and, alas, prone to errors. Those are the times when I do things like clicking on "Home" instead of "Make a link." My spelling, grammar errors, and incoherence increase then, too. I have been fortunate to have had fewer and shorter bouts of insomnia than usual during the last several months. It's making me grumpy that I can't figure out why that is. Nor can I predict that it won't get worse again! |

Subject: RE: BS: growing grumpy growing old From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 23 May 12 - 09:35 AM I was just reading a study that showed that older people are happier, on average, than younger people. So there! I'm generally a happy person. Born that way, I guess. However, if we are going to talk about grumpiness on the Mudcat, this is a good place for me to share my dislike of those ads that appear in a 2-inch by 2-inch box. I realize that there is a need for ads, but they THOSE ads? I despise the ad for a T-shirt with a lot of blood on it. It's being worn by an attractive young woman (of course). What's funny about a young woman with a knife wound? I dislike the ad for 'cartoon yourself' where the model has her legs splayed open and right in my face. Today's ad shows a young guy who could easily play a Neanderthal in a movie. Nothing wrong with that. Beautiful make-up job, however. Tasteful pink lipstick. Do they think I'm too stupid to see that? It's for claytoneverson.com, but I have no idea what that is and I'm not going to click and find out. I already have some tasteful pink lipstick. |
