Subject: The South Wind From: JedMarum Date: 23 Feb 12 - 11:00 PM I've long loved the beautiful tune, The South Wind ... and used it to tie some of Robert Burns thoughts on self worth and classless society to some of modern day thought on self reliance and personal responsibility. Perhaps that's more explanation then the song requires, but here is the result on Youtube. |

Subject: RE: The South Wind From: Acorn4 Date: 24 Feb 12 - 05:34 AM It is a great tune, and the Burns fits in vary well with it. Some years ago John Renbourne did a version called "Martinmass Wind" with lyrics on the "Ship of Fools" CD, but this seems to have vanished from Youtube. |

Subject: RE: The South Wind From: Tattie Bogle Date: 24 Feb 12 - 03:18 PM There's a previous thread on the origins of the tune (Which I had thought was O'Carolan's but maybe not! ) - here: thread.cfm?threadid=24052 And Murray Macleod kindly posted the words of Ewan McVicar's song "All the Tunes in the World" which is set to that tune in that previous thread. Video to follow! |

Subject: RE: The South Wind From: Tattie Bogle Date: 24 Feb 12 - 03:26 PM Oops, thought I'd video'ed it myself at our very recent "Muckle Sing" in Linlithgow, Ewan's home town. Seems I didn't, so here's another version: http://vimeo.com/17112458 |

Subject: RE: The South Wind From: Arkie Date: 24 Feb 12 - 05:54 PM In my opinion, South Wind is one of the most beautiful tunes ever written. Often when I hear a beautiful tune, my first thought is that it should have words, but South Wind stood on it own as far as I was concerned and had no need of words. Your setting of Burns words to the tune seems very apt and very well done. Thank you for sharing that. I've already listen twice and will be going back again. Do you have it on a recording? |

Subject: RE: The South Wind From: GUEST,mg Date: 24 Feb 12 - 05:55 PM Beautiful words here..and there have been words to South Wind for a long time..not sure how old..south wind of the gentle breeze you banish winter weather..bring salmon to the pools again the bees among the heather...mg |

Subject: RE: The South Wind From: JedMarum Date: 25 Feb 12 - 11:05 AM Arkie - Thanks! I have not recorded it yet. I wrote to "roll up" the themes of an upcoming album, and I am considering using it as the title too. These next few years are the 150th anniversary years of the American Civil War (or as we say in the South, "That Recent Unpleasantness") - and I have a number of songs I've written about the era, mostly historical and some period sounding. So I hope to record the song soon, but have not set a release date yet. Depends mostly on funding. At the moment, I have none! ;-) |

Subject: RE: The South Wind From: Tootler Date: 09 Mar 12 - 04:11 PM South Wind is a great tune and I agree it really stands on its own as a tune - one I quite often play on my flute. Your song does the tune justice Jed. Nice one. |

Subject: RE: The South Wind From: Greg B Date: 09 Mar 12 - 08:45 PM It's become a bit of a "signature tune" for first the "Compass Rogues" and later "The Richmontown Tavernacle Choir." A good deal of sentiment attached to this lovely waltz. The lyrics are so beautiful that it's almost learning Irish to sing them properly. |

Subject: RE: The South Wind From: JedMarum Date: 08 Mar 13 - 01:07 PM I have finally recorded this song. It is the title track of my new album (released on March 17, 2013). But here are links to the song that you can stream from your computer: The South Wind at ScoundCloud The South Wind at Reverbnation I am not sure if you have to be a member of either site to stream from them - but they're both good sites, and I know a lotta Mudcatters are already at both places. |

Subject: RE: The South Wind From: GUEST,Tunesmith Date: 08 Mar 13 - 02:34 PM South Wind takes me back to the 1970s and my attempts at learning Irish fiddle. The wonderful late Eamon Coyne, of the Liverpool Ceili Band, was the tutor at evening group classes. South Wind and Boolavogue were a couple of the early tunes that we tackled. To hear Eamon play those tunes was a great pleasure - and learning experience -indeed. |

Subject: RE: The South Wind From: JedMarum Date: 18 Apr 13 - 02:02 PM With your indulgence, I'll refresh this thread once more and ask that you take a look at the album on CD Baby and click the "preview all songs" button at the bottom of the song list. Doing this, (visiting the page and listen to the samples) helps keep my ratings high at CD Baby and keeps me from disappearing too quickly from the listings. ... besides, it gives you a chance to hear what The South Wind is all about! Thanks in advance for your kindness! |
