Subject: Tech: olddude A little Help with Recording From: olddude Date: 18 Jan 12 - 07:16 PM I had a number of comments that on the recording the voice is too soft and the guitar is too loud and vice versey ... I had to reset up this system here at home. Can you please tell me if the balance is a little better on this song as I just recorded it 5 min ago. I don't do a very good job on it as it is just a test for balance. All suggestions are welcome even the ones that go "stop playing and singing" LOL Lone Prairie |

Subject: RE: Tech: olddude A little Help with Recording From: GUEST,999 Date: 18 Jan 12 - 07:32 PM Dan, are you recording with no effects at all--no echo, reverb, delay? |

Subject: RE: Tech: olddude A little Help with Recording From: GUEST,olddude Date: 18 Jan 12 - 07:54 PM Bruce just me and 2 mikes and my geetar nothing else on the settings |

Subject: RE: Tech: olddude A little Help with Recording From: GUEST,olddude Date: 18 Jan 12 - 07:56 PM Oh sorry just small reverb set |
|
Subject: RE: Tech: olddude A little Help with Recording From: GUEST,999 Date: 18 Jan 12 - 08:06 PM You are getting some echo in there. Can you hang sheets from the walls to baffle the bounce-back? (Add the reverb if you feel you have to after mixing the two tracks.) |
|
Subject: RE: Tech: olddude A little Help with Recording From: GUEST,olddude Date: 18 Jan 12 - 08:09 PM Can do Bruce, very small room and I am pointed towards windows, good suggestion, never thought of that. I don't know how to record two tracks. I record as I play and sing, that most likely part of my problem also. Is the guitar and voice sort of more balanced? this was just a quick test recording that I will remove after I get the settings somewhat better. I wrote a couple new songs for a new CD and want to try and fix the mess I had the last time. |

Subject: RE: Tech: olddude A little Help with Recording From: GUEST,999 Date: 18 Jan 12 - 08:19 PM OK. 1) Do not aim the guitar microphone directly at the sound hole. Aim it more toward the bridge from the body end of the guitar kind of at 45 degrees. 2) Do you have a sponge cover on the voice mike? If not, try putting a handkerchief over the voice mike and hold it in place with an elastic band. |

Subject: RE: Tech: olddude A little Help with Recording From: GUEST,999 Date: 18 Jan 12 - 08:56 PM Dan, when you get a new sample done I'd like to hear it, OK? |
|
Subject: RE: Tech: olddude A little Help with Recording From: Bobert Date: 18 Jan 12 - 09:02 PM Are you using an pre-amp or amp, Ol'ster??? You can get a lot more out of yer acoustic geetar by setting how you want it to sound and fatten your sound with one... I mean, even mic-ing an amp moves you up into a bigger sound and then it's just a matter of messing with yer PA settings to get the voice to where the geetar is... It just a matter of putting a little fat on them bones... B~ |
|
Subject: RE: Tech: olddude A little Help with Recording From: GUEST,olddude Date: 18 Jan 12 - 09:46 PM Bobster no I am not using one, but that is a good idea ... now ya got me thinking ... thanks bro |
|
Subject: RE: Tech: olddude A little Help with Recording From: Charley Noble Date: 18 Jan 12 - 09:55 PM I'd like to hear your voice a little louder relative to the guitar. What kind of mics are you using and how close are you to the vocal mic? Cheerily, Charley Noble |

Subject: RE: Tech: olddude A little Help with Recording From: Bobert Date: 18 Jan 12 - 10:33 PM Man, you gotta get into some 'lectrics, Ol-ster... I mean, you ain't Pavarotti... Me neither... The P-Vine - she be classically trained and can do solos (without amplification) in a church in front of a 1000 people - can get away with stuff but that ain't us... Get some 'lectrics!!! B~ |

Subject: RE: Tech: olddude A little Help with Recording From: GUEST,Guest from Sanity Date: 18 Jan 12 - 11:05 PM OK..Dan, a small bit of reverb on the voice, and a little different setting on the guitar. You might use a COMPRESSOR and give it a bit of output....start with the compressor at 50% then adjust to your liking..it should give you more 'presence' and evenness; and the advice(Guest,999) about the mike, and the sound hole is correct...Don't mike the hole...but the wood behind the bridge. I typically use two mikes, and a pick-up through a compressor, and use three channels for the guitar..but two will do fine...that way you can adjust and balance the volumes, for the brightness, and the 'wood' sound! You can do this....all this stuff is easily available. I'm rooting for ya!...ANYTHING I can do to help..........ask! GfS |
|
Subject: RE: Tech: olddude A little Help with Recording From: Amos Date: 18 Jan 12 - 11:14 PM I'd say the amplitude is about right, maybe a red hair more on the voice. If you set it up to do two channels, one voice and one mike, you can then compress, reverbe, amp or soften either side at will in software. A |
|
Subject: RE: Tech: olddude A little Help with Recording From: Bobert Date: 18 Jan 12 - 11:15 PM What GfinS said, Ol-ster... Every one is usin' the tricks and once you know 'um then you begin to make better recordings... If you recorded in a decent studio the sound guy would be settin' you up right... That's where I learn stuff... Watch how they set mics and what mics they are using... Ahhhh, not that I have been all that successful myself with with home recordings... But I do understand what these folks are up to... B~ |

Subject: RE: Tech: olddude A little Help with Recording From: GUEST,Guest from Sanity Date: 18 Jan 12 - 11:27 PM Dan, listen to the sound and engineering on the two guitars, in this piece...the acoustic is miked, like I said....and it is recorded LIVE on a tape recorder..not digitally recorded(old school....and it was recorded in 1979. Tell what you think....you CAN separate the two guitars...and the voice is clean, and up front! Whether you like the song or not..check the SOUND! You can even hear clean 'finger squeak'....which usually I don't want to hear...but on this piece, it works GfS |

Subject: RE: Tech: olddude A little Help with Recording From: GUEST,olddude Date: 18 Jan 12 - 11:37 PM GFS and Bob Thank you and GFS you gave me some great things to try. Thank you Thank you. I love the sound you just showed me ... wow and in 1979 too Thank you |

Subject: RE: Tech: olddude A little Help with Recording From: GUEST,olddude Date: 18 Jan 12 - 11:38 PM Amos you should do that song, you got the chops to do it right. I just used it for a test. Love the song but I don't do it very well at all |

Subject: RE: Tech: olddude A little Help with Recording From: GUEST,Guest from Sanity Date: 18 Jan 12 - 11:50 PM Dan, OK.....not only that, it was recorded through an old Carvin P.A. head...MONO!!!..and in the mix down used a stereo chorus...FROM a GUITAR pedal!!! I have another VERY important handy hint..it is in your EQ setting. This was recorded WITH the EQ set so the high and low ends were elevated, but the vocals were lower..THEN I raised the VOLUME on the voice MIKE, to stand out, yet NOT have the interference from the highs and lows of the instruments get in the way of the voice. Once you SING a song with Vocals....the WORDS are the most important thing of the song, and should be heard CLEARLY, DISTINCTLY, AND CATCH THE NUANCES OF MOOD, RELAYING THE TONE INFLECTIONS..TO MAKE IT BELIEVABLE! BTW, did you like the actual song? GfS |

Subject: RE: Tech: olddude A little Help with Recording From: GUEST,olddude Date: 19 Jan 12 - 09:08 AM I sure did like the song, did you write it? |

Subject: RE: Tech: olddude A little Help with Recording From: Baz Bowdidge Date: 19 Jan 12 - 11:42 AM Olddude, in my opinion the guitar/voice balance is perfect (the edgy distortion sounds like level overload). Do you really want a Roland 80's chorus/echo smattering your guitar? That'll be a cop-out and if you're doing a CD that would be tedious. The natural echo you've achieved sounds just right - a bit more but virtually undetectable perhaps. A backing chorus adds and rounds off any song. Baz |

Subject: RE: Tech: olddude A little Help with Recording From: GUEST,Guest from Sanity Date: 19 Jan 12 - 11:55 AM Olddude, Yeah, I did. I'm playing lead guitar in it as well. Michael Llona, since deceased, was playing the other guitar, and doing the vocals. If you liked that one, there are two more up there, but they are instrumentals, both recorded LIVE, one at an open mike. The long one, "Bittersuite:Joy" I even was composing while posting on the Mudcat Forum...(remember when I said I was running up and down from the basement studio, and would pop on Mudcat to post an occasional satirical post?..) However, I recorded that one about a year and a half ago. I have about 12 more I'm going to post, once I get the time..which should be pretty soon. Here is "Bittersuite:Joy"..(note whose page it is on...I kept saying they were friends). This next one is about a half hour long..with a few pics. Sit back, relax..or be adjusted, and let it take you away! Some people have told me that thy listen to it over and over, using another tab, while doing other computer work. Also, I have another couple of Llona and myself, done in somewhat the same style of "My Lady". I'll see if I can get that one up soon, but I have to get going now..but I'll put it up, later. AND BTW, any serious musical Mudcatter, I'll try to help you in anyway possible. God Bless! 'Bittersuite:Joy' 'Seascape' Guest From Sanity |

Subject: RE: Tech: olddude A little Help with Recording From: GUEST,matt milton Date: 19 Jan 12 - 01:25 PM to be honest, I like the sound (particularly the guitar sound) you've got. I would cut back on off whatever reverb you've got on your voice, and experiment with mic placement in your room. You can get in really close to a mic with your mouth, if you have a pop-shield and the mic is either a bit below your mouth or above your mouth. Getting in close takes a lot of the "boominess" "reflectiveness" of the room where you're recording out of the equation. I think you've got a good balance. You're clearly a good enough musician that, frankly, you may as well go into a cheap local studio - they'll do you proud. |

Subject: RE: Tech: olddude A little Help with Recording From: GUEST,999 Date: 19 Jan 12 - 01:48 PM Michael, I've found some others of your compositions on YouTube. You do a CD, sign me up for one.
