Subject: Obit: Ronald Searle (St Trinians creator) From: JennieG Date: 03 Jan 12 - 04:29 PM Have just found out that Ronald Searle, British artists and cartoonist - he created St Trinian's School - died on 30th December. One of the people he influenced was John Lennon. I remember reading that his violent schoolgirls were based on his experiences as a prisoner of the Japanese during WWII. Cheers JennieG |

He is permenantly implanted in my memory as the illustrator of the Geoffrey Willans book "Nigel Molesworth - How to be Topp" I remember reading this in the very early sixties. A wonderful book. RIP Bugsy |

Subject: RE: Obit: Ronald Searle (St Trinians creator)-Dec 2011 From: fat B****rd Date: 04 Jan 12 - 11:47 AM I loved the St. Trinians cartoons but found his POW drawings harrowing at the other end of the scale. RIP Mr. Searle. |

Subject: RE: Obit: Ronald Searle (St Trinians creator)-Dec 2011 From: Charmion Date: 04 Jan 12 - 01:44 PM Edmund and I are both great fans of Nigel Molesworth (as any fule kno), and I was brought up on "Souls in Torment", the first St. Trinian's collection. I thought his illustrations for "The Great Fur Opera", the tercentenary history of the Hudson's Bay Company, were among his most amusing work (see some of them here; note especially "How to Make a Beaver Hat" about halfway down the page). More than anything, his cartoons convey scorn for those who go through life suffering from a desperate need for grandeur and delusions of adequacy. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Ronald Searle (St Trinians creator)-Dec 2011 From: Anne Lister Date: 04 Jan 12 - 03:25 PM Ronald Searle became part of our wedding ... when we were sorting out invitations we didn't want the conventional images of bells and stuff, but I found a postcard I'd bought in France which featured two of Searle's rather amorous cartoon cats, in a beautiful pose, and we thought that would be ideal. But being very alert to copyright issues we wanted to do the right thing, and I did some research to find out where Searle was living. Eventually I discovered an article that said he was in France, and enough clues to locate the right departement and village. So I sent a letter through the post, addressed to him (in French) as the famous illustrator, asking for his permission to use the image on our invitations. Almost by return I had a note from him, enclosing a pristine postcard of the same image, giving us his blessing to use the image and wishing us every joy. Still brings a lump to my throat and I'm so sorry he's now gone. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Ronald Searle (St Trinians creator)-Dec 2011 From: JennieG Date: 04 Jan 12 - 04:25 PM Anne, what a lovely story, and what a beautiful memory to have of the man! His cats were gorgeous. Cheers JennieG |
Subject: RE: Obit: Ronald Searle (St Trinians creator)-Dec 2011 From: Bat Goddess Date: 04 Jan 12 - 05:55 PM The first of his books that I added to my permanent library was "Searle's Cats" (1967, but I don't think I bought it until 1970-ish). His cats are such a delight! And "Too Many Songs by Tom Lehrer With Not Enough Drawings by Ronald Searle", of course. I definitely need to read the St. Trinians and Molesworth books. In my very formative years of the '60s and '70s, he was one of the first illustrators who made a deep impression on me. What a lovely story, Anne! What an approachable, generous person he must have been! Linn |
