It's about 2:30AM. Been about a half hour since I woke with excrutiating eye pain. Rinsed with water, then with water and "no tears" or some such. It's still bad. What next? What about salt water?

Sjogrens? It is an autoimmune condition that dries out mucous membranes. My eyes are always itchy and dry. I sometimes get sharp stabbing pain from behind eye outward. I have natural tears which I use to wash my eyes. And special toothpaste and oral gel and spray to keep mouth hydrated. Sjogrens may cause fatigue and joint pain too.

Read about Venus Williams.

Best bet is to see doc and make certain you take a list of all that ails you. Things like how you feel upon waking in the morning, (I feel hungover or like I am getting flu every morning) joint pain/swelling, brain fog, etc.   It will be easier to piece together a diagnoses with a full picture.

Get the pain checked out by a doctor, gnu.

A friend of mine suffered bad pain which seemed to come from behind her eyes. She had toxoplasmosis.

For one awful week, it was feared that she had multiple sclerosis, but then an opthalmologist used a special scope and spied the parasites. (I believe I read the 20% of the population harbors this parasite.)

I think I'll make an appt with my GP after he gets back from vacation. Been some other odd things going on also. Spikes and circles of light flashes... talked about it on another thread.

Light flashes - You should definitely have this checked out and right away if the flashes persist. If they subside after a half hour or so, you could be experiencing an occular migraine. Have you been on an airplane lately?

The lights and flashes -- don't wait til your medico is back from vacation. Get thee to an ER!!! NOW!!!

Pain...definitely see a doctor as soon as possible. But lights and flashes...that IS an emergency. The thing is that's symptomatic of several things, but if it turns out to be a detached retina, time IS of the essence. Do it NOW!

Hope it turns out not to be an emergency...

Linn

Ditto what Linn said, gnu. Also get checked for macular degeneration. My neighbor is legally blind now due to the dry version of macular degeneration.

No... I am a Canuck living in Moncton, NB. I shall call my GP's office on Jan 9 when they reopen and go thru proper channels. *I* have HEALTH CARE. There is NO such thing as an emergency here unless one is bleeding. Period. Game over. Live with it. I do.

ER? Not a hope. Not without blood. Been there done that. Ya don't even get a t-shirt... "I Survived the Moncton Hospitsl and I Wish All I got Were These Nasty Scars."

Sorry to be so nasty and negative but I have been thru the health care system here more than once. It's apalling... seriously. Ya just don't do it unless... yet again... yer bleeding.

But an opthamologist is what you need. NOT a GP. Eyes are too important for an amateur.

Ahhhh... proper channels???? Ya can't just call one. Ya gotta see a GP first who gives you a referral to a specialist. Then, ya wait in line.

Been waitin on one (not an eye doc) for over two years. Waited on an ENT for near a year... got the op at near two years... I have Canuck health care... fuck Mike Moore and his movie.

Sorry... I get a tad pissed off when people say I should DO something I can't do after I explained I can't do it. Perhaps I am just in a bad mood over this problem.

Thanks for all the advice and concern.

I find it hard to imagine how any hospital wouldn't treat that as an emergency.

A few years ago my girlfriend got a cat scratch on her eyelid. It got painful pretty quick; she phoned her GP who told her to get to the eye hospital in Edinburgh. They treated it as a case requiring extreme urgency, she was seen by a doctor and thoroughly examined within half an hour.

The reason wasn't what you'd think. They weren't concerned about eye damage at all. Infections like that can rapidly spread along the optic nerve to the brain and lead to meningitis. She got dosed with antibiotics before getting out of her chair.

Oh, I hope you do get help soon. Keep us up to date. My first thought was something I'd never heard of until a eye surgeon told me I have it: thumbprint dystrophy. I have no symptoms yet but he said if I have stabbing pain I should call him immediately no matter what time of day or night. So far I've had no problem. However, I don't think that would explain your other symptoms.

Well, SOB! My problems are age related and have to do with the muscles that move the eyes. Common. BUT... the left eye is protruding more than the last exam. I have been adivised to have blood work to check for hyperthyroidism and have a CAT scan (possibly leading to an MRI) as precautionary mearsures - another trip to the GP as the guy I saw today cannot order same.

He's a great guy. A 30 minute exam with explanations turned into 70 minutes as we talked about the Canuck health care system into his lunch hour. He even said. "If this or that occurs, call and tell my receptionist I told you to tell her to put you through to me immediately and I'll take the call." We have known each other for a while and I always have some great jokes for him.

BIG changes coming in the health care system here. And, they sound good and for good reasons. I don't wanna say any more, except that my referral to a specialist on 2010.04.06 will result in an appt on the 26th... after I told my GP last Monday that two years was too long and it's getting difficult to walk.

Thanks, m. Re two years... it seems the norm... took 22.5 months to get a nose op with an ENT. I gotta go back for another one so she can "tweak" the other side. She told me to wait 6 to 9 months and "see how it goes". Sorry to whine but I think it's good info for those dealing with the new system in the US.

We'll be thinking about you.

I'll raise a jar to that, John. But, your post does have as much merit as humour if intended so. I believe dehydration may have a roll in eye pain and mud in yer eye certainly causes dehyration. And, I have been known to get toasted by times.

Hey, gnu:

I waited eight months for a colonoscopy last year; good thing I didn't have colon cancer, eh? To be fair, the GI doc quizzed me carefully about signs and symptoms before putting me on the Slow Boat to China list.

Becca... I'd still be waiting if I didn't look at the doc and put on the puppy dog eyes and wimper and say I just don't know what I am gonna do if I can't walk. What I wanted to say was, "What the fuck is going on here? Do I have show you blood before something gets done? It's two and half years since I came to you to help me with this!"

Thanks for sharing that Charmion. I believe it's good for Yanks to hear about our medicare. Like SINS who could opt out of her private plan but should NOT, just yet. I believe it's good for Canucks to talk about our Medicare even if it's just here at Mudcat. I have been thru the system a few times. It's been messing up my system as it's been very poor at best. As for initial delivery of care, if yer not bleedin or screamin in pain, doc needs to bill for another patient on the medicare dime and you can wait. Sad but true.

Apparently, a lot of docs are suckin the teet for the coin. And that is why big changes are coming... two tier is already here and about to get a lot bigger... "Wellness Clinics" at $70 a pop. Even ops at the hop (at the HOP!) where you pay the doc cash and he still bills Medicare. It goes on NOW. I was shocked.

The provincial government is gonna let it happen by turning a blind eye to the federal health act on accounta that's the only way they can get rid of the greedy practices of some docs. Medicare is being bled dry because of greedy docs and poor practices required by existing regulations... again, I shant get into the details I discussed with the guy I saw today. Suffice it to say, he opened my eyes... no pun intended.

SINS... don't give up your private plan just yet.

I went and had my eyes checked late this past November, I could barely see out of my left eye. The Optometrist determined that I had a cataract and referred me to an Ophthalmologist. I was surprised to hear back that same day and had an appointment arranged for the first week of December. Long story short the day they scheduled the operation for was today January 13th. Here I am late on the evening with a new artificial lens implant typing on this thread in the Madcat.

In all it was less than 2 months from the day I saw the optometrist to haveing corrective eye surgery. Guess I'm lucky.

Gnu-
I've had more than a few run-ins with Private Mngled health Care Programs---including Kaiser-Permanente and Aetna. One that really bugged me was when I was out of state and came down with a serious prostate infection. I went to a local hospital, for emergency catheritization, and was informed that, in order to have my "Health" Insurance plan pay for required treatment, I'd have to go to the facility in my home state. I expalind that driving 150 miles in a sports car wearing a Foley bag wasn't feasible, but they said they would not provide n ambulance or alternative transportation. Finally had to to sue the bastard for the $10K bill----they settled at the last minute for the full amount, but I was out-of-pocket $5K for the lawyer.
Since Medicare, when I need medical help, I just call any doctor and make an appointment.
