If you cut burl or branch birds eye maple at 45 degrees from the normal grain you get a hard to carve but interesting pattern.

OF course if you see faces or other organic forms you might be crazy.

some violins I am finishing

I use linseed oil shellacs and other treatments to get a holografic depth that appears to go nearly a centimeter deep.

The cartoons I did in 1995 but still work today (although I added the Poirot text just today.)

I have 2 cellos of similar wood that will take a ton of work. If I may humblebrag, one of them is 300 years old with many patches and a sunken chest, but part of an old Amati is better than a reproduction.
The other needs a new spruce top and have all the varnish removed and an oil and ground begun again. That one was carved in China and varnished like an end table.

HEy Bill, you are the master wood man but on another matter, I met a pholosopher by the name of Reid. He applies his craft worldwide.
WOuld it be OK if I gave him your contact info, or do philosophic birds of feather fly solo?

Bird's Eye Maple is one of the most stunning designs of Mother Nature's tree grains. A buddy of mine has used this wood in various projects over the years. His works are amazing.

He would also cruise the countryside to spot trees and ask the landowner if he could pay to cut down the tree and bury it on site for three years, come back and get it. The invasion of rot multiplies the textural and visual presentaion of the wood and Mom Nature's design. Some of his works were... sorry to repeat... stunning. Chess sets... guitars... even just bowls.

But, from scratch, ya need a kiln and they don't come cheap. He had access to a kiln at one time... long story and not one that should be told.
