Subject: BS: Obit Carmen NZ Character From: Little Robyn Date: 14 Dec 11 - 03:28 PM In the 50s and 60s when homosexuality was illegal, Trevor Rupe, a Maori lad, became a notorious character who dressed in outlandish outfits and kept making news headlines. 'Carmen' opened a brothel in Wellington and had a bit of trouble with police before he/she shifted to Australia. TV news this morning says Carmen has died but I can't find an obit yet - just this blog. The video includes some interesting memories of the Kings Cross community in the early days. Carmen was living in Australia and I understand will be buried there. RIP Carmen |

Subject: RE: BS: Obit Carmen NZ Character From: Little Hawk Date: 19 Dec 11 - 05:07 PM Chongo was in tears when he heard about this. He apparently visited Carmen's establishment a couple of times while on a case in Australia back in the 1970s, and shared a few drinks and reminiscences. "She was a good egg," he said after the tears subsided. "A bit weird, mind ya...but definitely a good egg. They don't make 'em like that no more. Kinda like Marlene Dietrich, back in the day. She had style and was not afraid to let it show." |
