Subject: RE: Cannery/Fish Processing songs From: Joe Offer Date: 14 Dec 11 - 03:32 PM Don't forget this still-unanswered request for an Alaska packers' shantey. I suppose Fisher Lassie by Ian Sinclair is the "Fisher Lassies" MG refers to. MG, the others on your list don't seem to be at Mudcat. Can you post them? -Joe- |

Subject: RE: Cannery/Fish Processing songs From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 14 Dec 11 - 04:34 PM Surprised at their scarcity in Peacock's "Songs of Newfoundland and Labrador." "The Herring Gibbers" speaks of packers, but not processing. "Culling Fish," by Chris Cobb, Barred Island, Newfoundland. |

Subject: RE: Cannery/Fish Processing songs From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 14 Dec 11 - 04:56 PM "Canning Salmon," youtube, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CZmKf-o1fSE ------------------------------- CANNING SALMON Linda Chobotuk, words and music The guys on the dock laze around, race the forklift And sass the floor lady 'til its time for their tea They sit at the table by the window that opens And get paid a buck more an hour than me. Chorus- High is the smell, low is the pay Long are the hours, why do we stay? Somewhere outside a whole summer slips away While we're stuck here canning salmon. 2 The machinery's so loud that we say we've gone "can deaf" And our shift is long over before we can hear But they keep the noise level just under the limit So they won't have to buy us the right safety gear. Chorus- 3 First we can springs so heavy our arms ache Next we do sockeye; we can them with ease Then we do pinks, all mashed up and rotten So they're packed up in pound cans and shipped overseas. Chorus- Last night we were waiting for a boat to come in So they kept on line just standing around We didn't know that outside on the Fraser A boat had flipped over and two men had drowned. Chorus- http://victoria.tc.ca/Culture/Vnsc/prev/canning_salmon.html Victoria Nautical Song Circle's March 2000 Song of the Month. |

Subject: RE: Cannery/Fish Processing songs From: GUEST,mg Date: 14 Dec 11 - 08:28 PM packers are good. I have a song to I ride an old paint..I actually don't like songs to old popular tunes...but this one jumped. About my second cousins ancestors from Croatia..one was a box maker and one a fish packer. I like all sorts of songs about people involved in the fishing peripheral industries. mg |

Subject: RE: Cannery/Fish Processing songs From: Bettynh Date: 19 Dec 11 - 04:23 PM Not a song, but a classic story is "The Herring Shed" by Jay O'Callahan, about a 14-year-old girl starting work in Nova Scotia during WW2 (and then the rector came....). It features the chant, "Thumb in the gill, open the mouth, slip it on the rod in the herrin' shed." |

Subject: RE: Cannery/Fish Processing songs From: GUEST,mg Date: 21 Jan 12 - 09:52 PM If you are coming to rainycamp please come prepared with any canning or packing song you can come up with.might do some informal recording..probably Canning Salmon has already been taken, as has slime line, cannery shed, crab shaker...but there are probably some we can't think of. Other languages than English are fine. This is not PNW-centric, by which I mean of US of America, by which I mean any or all of the American continent, political ideals, islands, territories, etc. mg |

Subject: RE: Cannery/Fish Processing songs From: GUEST,mg Date: 22 Jan 12 - 12:43 AM Getting more interesting, especially as it ties in the fish cultures here and there..would love to find a song or two fromA Japan, Russia, Iceland etc. Also, many of them are about women doing some of this work. Why didn't I thihnk in terms of the fish flakes in Newfoundland. I have a song that mentions them. Here it is..sappy but oh well.. From oceans of distance my memory returns To a youth spent with lminkes and puffins and terns I was born on this rock and cradled in ice And the place that I come from was called Paradise Paradise in the spring paradise in the fall At this time of my life it's the best place of all And then I grew older from girl into maide Hurry up hurry up boys unless you're afraid Thyere was one I set eyes on one frosty cold n ight And our first habitation was in Heart's Delight Heart's delight i n the spring heart's delight in the fall At this time of my life it's the best place of all We knew pretty well what the future would bring The flakes in the summer the floes in the spring And the years rolled upon us and the years were well spent And the place where we settled was called Heart's Content Heart's content in the spring heart's content in the fall At this time of my life it's the best place of all For I was the bay girl and he the bay boy And he filled mjy whole life with kinship and joy And now he is gone and I'm burdened with care And the place I am going is called Bay Despair Bay Despair in the spring Bay Despair (point of spear in French) in the fall At this time of my life it's the best place of all And the place |
