Subject: BS: Computer problems -- genealogy From: GUEST,mg Date: 12 Dec 11 - 11:47 PM My computer in general is acting strange..I have backed up my genealogy data which is about what is on there. I use FTM 16 because it does what I want better. I just took a newer version off..and it said I was using that one, but I was always clicking 16..and it said I hadn't used 16 since 2009..wierd. I keep getting messages debug error..abnormal program terminated. Internet Explorer keeps crashing too. I updated to 8 I think yesterday, or at least reinstalled. I might try this with Firefox. There was some free cleanup program we used at work but I forget what it was..any suggestions? gm |
Subject: RE: BS: Computer problems -- genealogy From: GUEST,Jon Date: 13 Dec 11 - 01:26 AM IE updates can involve other Windows updates so I'd guess it is possible that your IE 8 upgrade process has upset FTM 16. There might be something in Internet Explorer 8 Update Corrupted Files & FTM 16 Won't Work of use to you. |

Subject: RE: BS: Computer problems -- genealogy From: JohnInKansas Date: 13 Dec 11 - 01:43 PM I'm told that FTM versions later than FTM16 include a feature that automatically synchs your genealogies (on your own computer) with what's on Ancestry.com if you subscribe to Ancestry?. (This feature is in the "2012" version but may/may not have been in versions between it and FTM16. You can change the setting to "manual synch" in 2012.) The synchronisation "feature" may require functions not available in IE before IE8(?), although I believe IE7 worked on our local addict's computer with FTM2012. What appears to be corruption of your genealogy files may be a result of a "synch update" (?). Failure to import older files could be caused by them being "too far out of synch"(?) if the feature is turned on. Versions of FTM prior to 2008 (FTM16 was the last of such?), when the program was "completely rewritten" may be unable to access some "features" now implemented by Ancestry, and/or changes in such features may have caused problems with older versions(?). This is speculative - based on comments from my "resident consultant" - as I'm not a user (and certainly never inhaled). John |

Subject: RE: BS: Computer problems -- genealogy From: GUEST,mg Date: 13 Dec 11 - 06:38 PM Do you think I could have corrupted all my genalogy files? Or just the ones i opened? When I read about taking IE 8 off I read that you can't if you have downloaded some pack...not sure if I did ever ...someone else loaded my computer..but I did go to control panel this am and try to remove it and download IE 7 and it stopped and said another version of IE was on computer..I could not find in program list...m |
