Subject: RE: Dec. Shanty Session@The Press Room(NH) From: Charley Noble Date: 12 Dec 11 - 05:55 PM Wow! What happened to the month??? I'll be there, if the weather is at all reasonable. Maybe I'll freshen up some snow shoveling shanties. Cheerily, Charley Noble |
Subject: RE: Dec. Shanty Session@The Press Room(NH) From: Bat Goddess Date: 12 Dec 11 - 07:14 PM What the above means is we'll also be singing seasonal songs -- including snow shovelling shanties, though I hope we won't actually be using them as WORK songs... Linn |

Subject: RE: Dec. Shanty Session@The Press Room(NH) From: SINSULL Date: 16 Dec 11 - 09:10 AM Refresh I am recovering from a bout of something nasty that has been maikng the rounds of the office. Sing Melancholy Baby for me. SINS |
Subject: RE: Dec. Shanty Session@The Press Room(NH) From: Charley Noble Date: 16 Dec 11 - 12:40 PM I'm also coming down with something nasty, and it's best that I not bring it down to the Press Room to share. Charley Noble, who is not amused |
Subject: RE: Dec. Shanty Session@The Press Room(NH) From: Jeri Date: 16 Dec 11 - 01:39 PM I can't tell if I'm coming down with something or the headache and chills are due to the weather and migraine. If it all goes away, I'll be there with my somewhat unreliable voice. If it doesn't go away, then I guess I'm coming down with something too. |
Subject: RE: Dec. Shanty Session@The Press Room(NH) From: NbptErnie Date: 16 Dec 11 - 02:02 PM And I'll be coming down ... to the Pressroom, that is. And I hope that all of you who are feeling under the weather have a speedy recovery, and maybe make it to The Pressroom anyhow. To those that don't make it, and whom I won't perhaps see until next year, a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you. Ernie Pigeon |
Subject: RE: Dec. Shanty Session@The Press Room(NH) From: Bupkes Date: 17 Dec 11 - 11:35 AM Thinking to quip, "I'll be coming down with something nasty to sing, today. I wonder how many of you regulars who sounded tentative now think you'll be showing up today? Jeri, Charley? Marty |
Subject: RE: Dec. Shanty Session@The Press Room(NH) From: Bat Goddess Date: 18 Dec 11 - 10:42 AM Small gathering, but we ended up making some visitors from Michigan pleased that they chanced upon the session. Tom and I got there first, but it took the jazz people awhile to vacate the area. Ernie and Amy arrived from Newburyport and Jeri showed up earlier than she usually does. And after a bit Chris Maden made it. For instrumentation we had three, count 'em, three English-system concertinas. That's it. No banjos, guitars, whistles. Just voices and concertinas. I guess the excuses for non-appearance were mostly words of three letters -- "gig" or "bug". We were all healthy, though, and in good voice. (Really wish Tom had more voice, though.) Will post a playlist sometime either after work today or maybe tomorrow. Linn |
Subject: RE: Dec. Shanty Session@The Press Room(NH) From: Charley Noble Date: 18 Dec 11 - 01:17 PM Linn- Thanks for the update. I don't think I would have added much to the gathering, except for my cold buggy friends. And they don't sing. They just hack and cough and dribble. Charley Noble |

Subject: RE: Dec. Shanty Session@The Press Room(NH) From: Charley Noble Date: 19 Dec 11 - 01:33 PM Wow! You folks never seem to run out of songs. Someone should have sung Brian Chadbourne's "Shopping Shanty." Cheerily, Charley Noble |
Subject: RE: Dec. Shanty Session@The Press Room(NH) From: Bat Goddess Date: 20 Dec 11 - 08:35 AM Charley, I forgot to bring the words...alas. Hope I remember to dig them out before Friday's session. "Santa come back! Take in the slack! My Christmas list gets longer every year. So why's it have to start before Thanksgiving? It's enough to make me lose my Christmas cheer!" Linn |
Subject: RE: Dec. Shanty Session@The Press Room(NH) From: Charley Noble Date: 20 Dec 11 - 02:14 PM Linn- Knew you knew it. It's a Christmas classic. Judy and I just got back from a final shopping spree in Freeport. Never again....for another year. Charley Noble |
Subject: RE: Dec. Shanty Session@The Press Room(NH) From: GUEST,Uncle Jaque Date: 21 Dec 11 - 06:27 AM It's been a while since I wandered in here, but glad to hear that the tradition continues. Just wanted you to know that I miss and remember you all fondly. Is there anything going on in the Augusta to Lewiston (Maine) area? About 6 years ago we re located from Yarmouth up here to Monmouth - a really lovely little village in between those cities - to be closer to the kids. Besides; Yarmouth was getting entirely too civilized! I've been doing a few Civil War Music gigs for the Town's annual "Apple Festival", local Historical societies, Senior Housing communities, etc. especially for the "Sesquicentennial" of the Civil War. Last Summer I even came out of reenacting retirement for a bit to re-join the 3rd Maine Fife & Drum Corps at the Augusta Civic Center for a 150th commemoration. I'm not so sure that any war is something we need to be "celebrating" particularly. That's about it for music. Would kind of like to get back into it some time. May all the blessings of the season be abundantly enjoyed by Mudcatters all - especially the continuation of or restoration to good health! |
Subject: RE: Dec. Shanty Session@The Press Room(NH) From: Charley Noble Date: 21 Dec 11 - 09:43 AM Uncle Jaque- Missed hearing from you as well. No, I'm not aware of anything going related to traditional music in the greater Augusta area. Roll & Go will be doing a promotional special event at the Maine Crafts Center at the Service Plaza in West Gardiner some Saturday afternoon in January. Cheerily, Charley Noble |
Subject: RE: Dec. Shanty Session@The Press Room(NH) From: GUEST,Uncle Jaque Date: 21 Dec 11 - 04:50 PM Keep me posted on said Service plaza gig, won't you? It's not all that far from here and I might pop over for old times sake. Might have a hard time keeping my big gob shut when you go to do "Strike the Bell" though! Do you still hear from big Brett from time to time? I didn't see any mention of the Ol' Captain Kendall - what's up with him these days? Speaking of Captains, bumped into Steve B. at a gun show a while back - he was looking good. Still probably the most interesting person I know! We had some wikkid good shanty hoots in his barn, didn't we? |
Subject: RE: Dec. Shanty Session@The Press Room(NH) From: Bat Goddess Date: 21 Dec 11 - 05:07 PM Good to hear from you, Uncle Jaque -- think of you often! (At least as often as when the Civil War comes up, which is pretty often.) Brett's been living in Guam for the past several years. Kendall and Tom have been performing (at least in our fantasies) as The Hoarse Brothers, neither having full possession of their pre-cancer voices, but both with some hope for the future. Linn |
Subject: RE: Dec. Shanty Session@The Press Room(NH) From: GUEST,Uncle Jaque Date: 21 Dec 11 - 05:32 PM Thanks for the update, Linn. Hope, they say, springs eternal. Please convey my fond regards to the "Hoarse Bros." Blessed be. |
