Anybody watching Pillars of the Earth on Reelz Channel?

It's nice to see Al Swearingen's ancestor Waleran in fine form.

I LOVED the book (and the ones that followed) and have seen the show advertised. I was hoping to catch some of it and that it might be at least half as good as the book!!! What do you think Seamus....does it do the book justice?

Michelle

Th film is quite true to the book. I know because I re-read the book just before the film was aired.

The production values are good - the church looks pretty convincing - and the acting is first-rate.

LilyFestre, you got me worried when you said you loved the book (and the ones that followed). As far as I know, there was only one sequel, World Without End, which came out in 2007 - Pillars of the Earth came out in 1989. I loved both books, and I also liked the TV series. The Pillars of the Earth DVD version is only $17.49 at Amazon today.

Is it possible I read that book 20 years ago?

Aye, and the author Ken Follett is a decent journeyman bass player in a UK folk band. (Just to make a Mudcat link for you.)

YEAH! Thanks, Ian. I recall it was a great story, and I think what threw me at the time was the fact that Follett wrote it. I started the book with some trepidation that the story would be bungled, but if I remember correctly that lasted for twenty pages and I was stuck closer to that book than a mosquito on fly paper. The other stories I'd read by Follett were 20th century based, and it was a surprise to see what he did with the tale and the research that went into writing it.

The books remain two of my all-time favourites. We were pleasantly surprised to find the mini-series available on netflix last year and could hardly wait to watch it each night; didn't want it to end! Most excellent, books and tv production.

How great to hear the miniseries is faithful to that excellent work by, yes, a surprising author for that particular genre. Was there a second sequel, though? That plural in "ones that followed" worries me, what have I missed?

I have no TV but will have to see about getting that...

Well, Michelle, as with any adaptation of a book to screen, there are big chunks of it left out. With the book, the characters were clearly delineated, but in the series, which is enjoyable nonetheless, you'd need a scorecard to keep track of who's who.
Very good choice of cast, I thought, with the leads being particularly good.
I also enjoyed "Pillars" as as book on CD.
Ian McShane (remember him as Al Swearingen in 'Deadwood'?) is a perfect villain.

Joe...that S was a mistake! It was a wish, really! I absolutely loved both books and was sad when it ended!!!

Who is most despicable?
Wiiliam Hamleigh?
Waleran Bygod?
Walter?
Lady Hamleigh?

Great books.
Faithful miniseries.

Gaahhhh!
