Subject: Tune 'Assist Me All Ye Muses' - info? From: Bonnie Shaljean Date: 06 Dec 11 - 02:38 PM Hi Hivemind (Mudmind?) A friend in the north of Ireland has sent me the following query, and I can't help her with it so thought I'd throw it open here and see what might surface. The question concerns one of the tunes in the Petrie Collection, No. 840. If you're not familiar with it, the Petrie Collection is well worth having anyway. A PDF can be obtained from the link below (ignore the "p.128" in the file title, which was for a student - I'm still new to Dropbox!) and it's about 25mb so it could take a minute to download. After it opens, you may need to scroll down because the first page is blank in some downloads - though not others - for some reason. Anyway: Petrie Collection 1859 http://dl.dropbox.com/u/45395646/Petrie%20Collection%20p128.pdf MY FRIEND WROTE: I have been looking this past couple of weeks at a tune in the Petrie Collection from Derry, Assist me all ye muses, No. 840. It seems to have strains of Sheabhac na hEirne in it as well as similarities to Craigie Hill as sung by Cara Dillon. I have Googled all possibilities for the words, which only refer me to a song in Scotland, Adieu to Bogie Side, collected in GreigDuncan8. If it is sung to the same tune as recordings made of Lizzie Higgins, then it is not our Petrie air. Another is in Sam Henry's Collection but again it's not our air. I was wondering if you knew anything about it. It is a beautiful air. I am also curious about the source mentioned, an "O Neill collection" dated 1787 that Petrie gives, which obviously does not refer to Captain Francis O'Neill. What is this O Neill collection, any idea? |

You can find index entries for the mss here: Patrick O'Neill index at NLI and a summary here on the session site: A significant collection of traditional music was purchased by the National Library of Ireland. Subject: RE: Irish tune in Petrie Collection - info? From: Mick Pearce (MCP) Date: 07 Dec 11 - 10:53 AM Yesterday I did try running the start of the tune through JC's tunefinder to see what it found, but it threw me out for taking too much time, with a try later message. I'll try and do it again later today (or maybe tomorrow - I'm a bit busy today; someone else might want to try in the meantime). Mick |

Subject: RE: Irish tune in Petrie Collection - info? From: Bonnie Shaljean Date: 07 Dec 11 - 02:14 PM [I asked the mods to give this thread a clearer title - think the last one was a bit obscure.] I've also dumped the Petrie file that my link led to, because Mick's IMSLP ones are much better. I say "ones" because it's in three parts. |

Subject: RE: Irish tune in Petrie Collection - info? From: Bonnie Shaljean Date: 07 Dec 11 - 02:33 PM Yes. I know. See what I just wrote in the post above yours. Then see the link I am referring to, in Mick's post of 3:21. Should answer your question. |
