Subject: BS: Wish me luck (Minor surgery)
From: Dave the Gnome
Date: 01 Dec 11 - 01:54 AM

Later today, all being well, I shall be undergoing Endovenous Laser Treatment (EVLT) for Varicose Veins. They are doing both legs so I shall probably have a general anaesthetic which I am a bit wary of. I did have one about a year ago when I had a plate screwed to my broken wrist and I was fine then so I am not too worried.

The Varicose veins are heriditary, from my mothers side, but as I have suffered from thrombo-phlebitis a couple of times they decided to operate. I blame standing on the damp grass dangling my fishing rod in a pond for all those years myself.

If anyone is interested in vascular surgery this is the website of Prof. Mo Baguneid who will be doing th eprocedure. I am setting off around 10:30 and will be first on the list at 2pm. Hopefuly home early evening and posting an update on here.

Cheers

DtG

Good luck Dave, may your legs look like a 25 year old. (Perhaps Laphroaig). Your mother had varicose veins in her side? That must of been painful.

Dave - good luck with the op. And don't, in future, dangle your rod while standing in the damp grass.

You gnomes are all the same...

Hi Dave

Best of luck with the op(s).

I have not had that op but during the problems with my throat I have many general operations. IMHO there is nothing to be concerned about....only thing is you have to be able to count backwards from 10 - 1.
I never remember reaching 6.

Perhaps you should have stood in the water and threw your line out on to the bank...lol

Best of luck and want to here you are up and out very soon.

Regards

Mike

All the best for a speedy recovery. I have been putting Biofreeze on mine before going to gigs/theatre/cinema so my legs don't ache in restricted legroom, but I may have to have the op one day.

How hereditary are they? Both my parents had operations for them in their 30s - I'm 62 and have never had any at all.

Jack - they do seem to be hereditary but, as with a lot of this stuff, may skip a generation sometimes.

Good thoughts coming from Maine, Dave.

Well, got home a couple of hours back and you will be glad to know all went well. Thanks to everyone for your good wishes - I realy do appreciate it.

The anaethetic was, apparantly, a very light one. I felt just a touch woozy when I awoke but it passed very quickly and I felt fine whin an hour of the op. They sealed the veins and didn't need to take any out so the only (very small) incisions are at the tops of my legs. It will bruise and is quite sore but not what anyone could describe as painful. Worst thing is the bandages that go from foot to groin and make me walk like Michelin man! Still - they will be off by Saturday and I will have the joy of walking round in compression stockings for about 4 weeks. Don't even TRY to imagine it - You will have nightmares :-)

I do have to inject myself with heparin for a couple of weeks but, hoefuly, that will be the end of it and I will have no more problems from the varicose veins. There is a 10% chance of re-occurence but now I know I can do a lot to lower that chance still more. Weight is a major issue but two of the other things which will help non-recurrence are more excercise and less alcohol - both of which will help the former!

In answer to Jack's query - and anyone else interested - Heredity is only part of it. If you have a healthy lifestyle the chances are lowered considerably but your mother having varicose veins is a high factor. It doesn't seem to get passed through the male side so, seeing as I have them and my wife doesn't, chances are that my kids will not be affected in that way - Although anyone can get them for a large number of reasons.

Anyway - Off to bed soon. Thanksyou all once agian.

Cheers

Dave

The hereditary factor is somewhat different for male vs female children, with women apparently somewhat more likely to inherit the trait (from a mother) than male kids in the same family. The difference is slight, and some suspect that the real reason that pregnancy tends to kick off the varicosities in women.

The obvious conclusion is that if your mother hadn't had any children she might not have had varicose veins, (and quite probably you wouldn't have inherited them from her).

Duh ...

John

Yea, but if your Mother didn't have any children, you are not likely to either...

Not a bad nights sleep. Woke up with a headache though How the hell does leg surgery do that?

:D

I dunno Jacqui - My mate had some cream that he put on his bum that gave him headache - Honest!

Thanks again everyone -

Been to the shops today - Only a few minutes but at least managed to get mobile easy enough. Bandages off tomorrow morning I think and on with the sexy stockings...

:D

Kewl! That is great news!

Jacqui's right; it can take a while for the deep tissue anaesthetic to work out. Lots of water will help with a headache, too. That's the most common reasons for a headache, according to a couple of docs I see...people being dehydrated.

Keep up the good progress!

You might have them check to see if they'll save them for you....and if they come in light gauge, mediums, or heavy.....oh, and don't forget to get a classical guitar!

Hey, hope you the best!
