Well, well, well...

Ya' see 'um on TV being shot from helicopters but...

So the P-Vine and I were in West Charlotte today slowing down for a rd light when I noticed a car coming up from behind me doing 70-80 miles an hour so I pulled over to the curb and...

...sheeeewwwwoooooooo!!!

Sumabich not only missed us by less than a foot but also took a right turn right in front of us as the road veered right...

Then less than 2 seconds later it was...

...sheeeewwwwwooooooo... sheeeewwwwooooooo as two cop cars did exactly the same...

Pretty exciting!!!

Anyone else ever been in the middle of one of these???

Never seen a high-speed chase, but recently saw a bunch of cops with guns drawn aiming at a car in a pawn shop's parking lot. Somehow, I don't think it was a routine traffic stop.

Well, Jerry was once held at gunpoint and frisked by the police about thirty years ago. Seems they thought he was about to hold up a coin shop and the owner had called the police telling them Jerry was armed.

Actually, he had been in the shop trying to sell some coins we had inherited to raise the money to buy a Martin D-35. When he came out he realized he had locked his keys in the car and was waiting for assistance.

Armed? No, he had a pager on his belt which made a lump in his jacket and this was long before anyone had a pager or a cell phone.

He has never locked his keys in the car since!

Couple weeks ago I was tooling along the Interstate, just going from one ramp to the next, and saw three State Police cars gathered 'round another "civilian" car. Dunno what was going on, but ahead of the group was a guy walking along, jumping into the air, and waving his arms.

I didn't stop.

I used to ride with a friend who was a state police officer. We were parked in a area where speeders are common, and one went by going like the hammers of hell. Friend started the engine took off after him and he blew out of sight in no time. Never did catch him.We were going over 100 so he must have been going well over that.

Rap,

I was thinkin' as I saw the guy comin' up that somethin' was wrong and coulda stuck my Honda CRV out at the right time and crashed the guy... Woulda wiped out the left front of my car and then again I might have found out that I wrecked a cop??? I reckon I did all I could do was getting out of the way...

I'm sure they got this guy tho... I'll check the news later and the paper tomorrow... This was a serious chase...

Lotta areas don't allow cops to chase if there ain't a violent criminal being chased... Good plan... I mean, why jeopardize everyone else's safety for a guy who ran a red light???

Last year. I was driving on a long stretch of highway between Mission and Alice, Texas. The two young men were ambling along walking along each side of the road. A Border Patrol SUV come up behind one and the both take off into the trees on the median just as I pull even. In my mirror I see a Border patrol agent take of running faster than I think I have ever seen a man run in my life. As fast as he was going, I'll bet he caught one of them.

We have had several police chases in our neighborhood since we have been here. Bad guys think it is a short cut to the expressway. They get quite a shock when they reach the creeks. Usually then they take off into the wetlands and the cops break out the Chopper and the dogs. There was a chopper circling tonight.

Cops don't really NEED high-speed chases. Radio ahead and pull an 18-wheeler across the road, or put down spike strips. Ain't nobody gonna go faster than radio waves.

I came outta the bank on the uni campus and heard "Freeze!" but I wasn't really payin attention. I reached into my jean jacket pocket under my rain jacket for my smokes and I heard "Freeze or I'll fire!" That got my attention... especially when I heard the pump action shotgun... that kinda gets yer attention REAL quick.

Bit of a story but the sad part is nodody got a pic of me up against the squad car in front of the bank with these guys levelling their weapons at me. Woulda been a great pic.

Turned out, in the end, near as I could figure out, it was a training exercise for a new recruit. Just glad he wasn't trigger happy. HE never pulled his pistol... and I am GLAD he didn't on accounta he was shakin like a leaf in a gale when he took my particulars.

I asked one of the officers what the fuck that was all about. He said they were tipped off that someone was gonna rob the bank. I said, "So you fuckin guys holler "freeze" at someone walkin outta the bank when it WASN'T ROBBED?!" That'swhen he explained to me that it was in my best interest if I just walked away. I did.

Not much of a story... but I really wish someone had gotten a pic so's I could tell the grandkids about my bank robbing days.

I got bailed up at my car by about a dozen officers, just truncheons drawn, but they were armed, unusual in England at that time. 2am in Leicester, the car had a London registration, and there had been an armed robbery. 'Acting on a hunch.'

I didn't do it.

Does this count? I once saw a litter-bin on fire at a playing-field, and our village policeman put it out in a way that nature has only equipped gentlemen to do.

Don't want to think about the Health and Safety implications.

We were driving in Teheran during the revolution and arrived at a road junction in the middle of a gunfight. There were a couple of soldiers kneeling in the road firing up the side road. There was another soldier calmly standing in the middle of the road directing traffic away from the road junction.

Needless to say we went where we were told.

Late one night coming back from a party in Maidstone, Jacqui was driving, up Bluebell Hill and turned onto the M2.

She said "there are a lot of lights behind. I turned to look. After some concentrating it became clear that there were three sets of headlights (this in on a 2 lane motorway as it was then) and another set weaving about behind them. And lots of blue flashing lights. And sirens.

2 sets jiggled a bit and the behind set came through - no blue lights on that one. They were coming down pretty fast. We tucked WELL out onto the hard shoulder and a white Transit van with dents on the side we could see went past for all it was worth and three police cars lights and sirens on - one dented on the side we could see.

We inferred that the Transit had rammed its way through the "rolling roadblock".

A few seconds later the Transit rolled, big style, and came to rest on the armco beside the hard shoulder, upside down.   The police cars blocked the road. we pulled up to make an orderly queue and there we sat.

After a few minutes a plod came back, thanked us for having the sense to have got out of the way (!) and told us that the Transit had been involved in an armed blag and they had been trying to stop it from near Sittingbourne. And that we would have to wait until they got the injured blaggers out.   Amazingly they all walked out but two seemed to have broken arms.

About half an hour later we got rolling again.

Waiting my turn at a 4 way stop a red SUV came barreling through with out stopping and hit a deputy car in middle of intersection. A load of teenagers piled out of SUV and legged it in every direction.

Turned out the 15 year old driver had stolen his dad's car and was out joy riding with friends and had the accident less than a block away from his own house. Sorry nothing more exciting to offer in the way of neener cars.

Bobert, in many areas you are right. In rural Maine back in the 60's there was one cop per 100 square miles.Spike mats? LOL.

He realized that the chase was useless and dangerous so he broke it off.I was glad he did.

For a few months back in the 80s I used to drive every day from Bristol (UK) to Aylesbury and back. 110 miles each way, mostly along the empty-ish M4 motorway, so I wasn't hanging about.

Most early mornings when I passed the Bath junction there would be a cop car parked on the entrance ramp as I flew past and one morning he started after me. I kept my foot down and he didn't catch up with me until I was slowing down for the Oxford exit. Going down the ramp he pulled alongside me and when we both stopped at the roundabout below the guy in the passenger seat wound his window down, smiled and said "Good morning"...and they drove off. Didn't bother coming after me again.

I wouldn't try it these days, that's for sure, roads are far too busy.

Here's one I nearly forgot. Last year I was tooling down the M40, nice and legal in fairly heavy traffic, when a cop car pulls in front of me and straddles lanes 1 and 2 and lights up his "follow me" sign!

So I look at the bloke alongside me in lane 1 and he looks at me and shrugs his shoulders. So we both pull over and stop behind the cop car. Young officer gets out and says to me "Not you, we were trying to pull over the truck behind you. Please rejoin the motorway safely when I move away". Then he goes to the bloke behind me and says much the same thing, I guess, gets back in the car and drives off, not really giving me the chance to say "then why the fuck did you put the sign on in front of us and not the truck?".

Probably just as well I didn't get the chance, but it comes to something when a motorway cop can't even pull over the right vehicle.
