Subject: BS: Looking for Information on the Following From: Beer Date: 24 Nov 11 - 08:07 AM Found this years ago and wonder if anyone has ever seen this before. It is about one inch long. Obviously it has something to do with seamen but if anyone knows any history on it, it sure would be appreciated. Adrien https://picasaweb.google.com/105264597814788639848/Nov242011# |

Subject: RE: BS: Looking for Information on the Following From: Beer Date: 24 Nov 11 - 09:07 AM That is strange, it works at this end. Any suggestions out there? ad. |
Subject: RE: BS: Looking for Information on the Following From: artbrooks Date: 24 Nov 11 - 09:13 AM Sorry, but I also got "Sorry, that page was not found". |
Subject: RE: BS: Looking for Information on the Following From: Jim Dixon Date: 24 Nov 11 - 09:23 AM Me too. However, when I go to https://picasaweb.google.com/105264597814788639848 I see several pictures, but none of them has today's date on it. |
Subject: RE: BS: Looking for Information on the Following From: Beer Date: 24 Nov 11 - 09:36 AM Try this one. https://picasaweb.google.com/105264597814788639848/Nov242011?authuser=0&feat=directlink |
Subject: RE: BS: Looking for Information on the Following From: Bill D Date: 24 Nov 11 - 09:36 AM the link works if you copy it and remove the # at the end. I still have no idea what the item is. ALWAYS be careful of links which end in a symbol like that. |
Subject: RE: BS: Looking for Information on the Following From: Megan L Date: 24 Nov 11 - 09:38 AM Couldnt get it to load but after visiting Jim's link i went back and tried to highlight Adrians link to copy and paste but must have hit it and the picture popped up. Ok so it is about an inch a fouled anchor with a coil of rope above it could it be a brooch or badge? |
Subject: RE: BS: Looking for Information on the Following From: Beer Date: 24 Nov 11 - 09:48 AM Above the anchor a chain and it is worn around the neck. it is not a broach or badge. it is meant to be worn around the neck. Thanks Bill for that information ( # ) Does the last try I made work? Works fine here. |
Subject: RE: BS: Looking for Information on the Following From: John MacKenzie Date: 24 Nov 11 - 09:53 AM The anchor has been used as a Christian symbol, so it's not unusual to see it do duty as a crucifix. The fouled anchor when used in a tattoo, signified that the wearer has crossed the Atlantic. Items like this are still available to buy, here is an image of one. |

Subject: RE: BS: Looking for Information on the Following From: EBarnacle Date: 24 Nov 11 - 10:03 AM I have also seen similar pieces as a brooch or watch fob or on a key chain. |
Subject: RE: BS: Looking for Information on the Following From: Beer Date: 24 Nov 11 - 10:40 AM Thank you John. Very much appreciated. Hope you are well. Ad. |
Subject: RE: BS: Looking for Information on the Following From: theleveller Date: 24 Nov 11 - 11:33 AM Certainly looks like a watch fob to me. |
Subject: RE: BS: Looking for Information on the Following From: michaelr Date: 24 Nov 11 - 03:02 PM What do you mean by 'fouled'? |
Subject: RE: BS: Looking for Information on the Following From: John MacKenzie Date: 24 Nov 11 - 03:39 PM It has a rope twisted round it. If you get an anchor entangled in it's rope or other debris, it is described as 'fouled' An anchorage wher the bottom is covered in snags and anchoring is difficult, is described as 'foul ground' |
Subject: RE: BS: Looking for Information on the Following From: GUEST,999 Date: 24 Nov 11 - 03:54 PM Might be worth trying that out with Google Images. I think there's a search thing there that will do its best to find other pictures/configurations that are the same or similar. |
Subject: RE: BS: Looking for Information on the Following From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 24 Nov 11 - 03:55 PM It bears a crucifix; it is a Mariner's Cross. John MacKenzie is right. Not an award, but some religious mariners wear them. The link worked for me (IE), and the image is enlarged when clicked on. |
Subject: RE: BS: Looking for Information on the Following From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 24 Nov 11 - 04:13 PM Google provides explanation and a bit of history on the Mariner's Cross. |
Subject: RE: BS: Looking for Information on the Following From: Beer Date: 24 Nov 11 - 05:49 PM Thanks all for the valuable information. Q, if I had known it was called a "Mariner's Cross" I would have googled it. Thanks again. ad. |
