Well, well, well...

As some folks may know I won the Charlotte Blues Society blues challenge in the solo/duo category and with that sponsorship to compete in the International Blues Challenge in Memphis Jan. 31st thru Feb 4th... Well, I didn't think I'd be competitive without my old harp (harmonica) player, Jay Thomas so I asked the Charlotte Blues Society if they would allow him to represent them with me and finally got an "okay" from them so it's a go...

I will be competing as "Sidewalk Bob & Jay Walker"...

I wish you success, Bobster. IMO, you are deserving of it, and also it couldn't happen to a nicer person. I'm rootin' for you, buddy.

After you bring it all back home, can I still call you Bobert or will it have to be Mr Bob?

What's the setup at the competition? How many preformances, set times, etc. You know yet?

B

You can call me anything but "Late-to-Supper". brucie...

The IBC is tough... Real tough... 150 bands & solo/duo competitors... Very tough...

But I gotta a couple "secret" tricks that I don't think others will be using... No, I know they won't...

You got your work cut out for you. That is a large field. How do the categories break down?

2 categories, brucie...

1. Band: 3 or more

2. Solo/Duo: 1 or 2

There will probably be around 100 bands and 50 solo/duo and these folks will be coming from all over the world...

You make sure you got it all cold. For sure you'll have a few nerves as the day(s) approaches, but practise is as always the key.

I've sent a message. Take it to heart.

Hi, bobert. I'm gonna share a story with you.

Once upon a time, I signed up to do a talk at a folklore convention on 'Contemporary Proverbs.' The night before the gig, I lay awake, asking myself why the heck I had signed up for something so daunting. There would be people there with PhD's! Who did I think I was? etc etc

Suddenly I thought, "The people are there to be entertained, and I can do that with my eyes closed and one hand behind my back."   I went to sleep, I gave the talk, and it was a success.

Don't worry if you win the prize. Most people are there to be entertained, and you can do that easily.

A couple of "tricks"? I hope like hell they don't involve total or partial nudity!
Good luck Bob!

Yeah.....I was thinking about the old Lenny Bruce bit where Bobertz takes out his willie and hangs a sign on it saying, "If I get the most applause the other guy is going to kiss it." Couple of problems there though starting with the need for some decent sized equipment............

I was thinking of that one, too, Spawzer... Problem is that Willie is one bad-boy and would have them women fighting each other to get to him... Plus, the P-Vine is going to be there...

Hey, leeneia... Part of my act is story telling but I do it while faking like I'm tuning but I've always told my stories... My main man, Sparky Rucker, once told me, "If you're gonna get the song then you're gonna have to sit thru the sermon"... Or something like that???

The storytelling sounds great, Bobert.

I heard Sparky Rucker in concert once. He did a beautiful version of Red River Valley, with wonderful floating chords.

As the last number he did 'This Land is Your Land, This Land is My Land," and he had the incredible ability and stage presence to make us actually enjoy it!

Yeah, leeneia, Sparky and I go way back and he, his wife Rhonda and his son Jamie stayed at our house 3 or 4 years ago when he had a nearby gig... Personally, I like his blues better than his Americana/Trad stuff but it's all good...

Well, well, well...

Seems that a ball got dropped somewhere along the process... I had been looking for an email from the Charlotte Blues Society to tell me what to do and, well, it somehow got trashed without me seeing it??? Other folks do use my computer??? I donno what happened but it happened and, well, I ain't going...

Guess that's God's way to protecting me from having to buy yet another "Bucksnort, Tn" ballcap on the long drive to Memphis...

Yeah, it sucks but what are you gonna do???

Life goes on... Think I'll just get drunk... lol...
