Subject: BS: What do you burn? From: gnu Date: 07 Nov 11 - 07:27 PM I seldom do hash anymore but I like to burn it. I just burned a corned beef hash. Spuds, turnip, carrots and canned "Hereford" brand corned beef from Brazil (It's a "throwback" treat for me). My Gramma Owens burned everything... even things that shouldn't have been burnt. Maybe that's why Gramps was such a good cook? What do you like to burn? |
Subject: RE: BS: What do you burn? From: Gurney Date: 07 Nov 11 - 07:43 PM Italian Plum Tomatos. Not so much burn them as dry them out in a frypan. Best taste ever with a fry-up. |
Subject: RE: BS: What do you burn? From: Don Firth Date: 07 Nov 11 - 08:03 PM Peaner buttle and marmalade sandwiches. Which is to say that I stick a couple of slices of bread into the toaster oven while I rummage through the refrigerator for the peanut butter and marmalade. By the time I locate them, the damn toaster oven goes, "DING!" "Uh oh!" sez I, and open up the toaster oven to find two very charred pieces of toast. I keep forgetting to reset the blasted toaster oven. I go ahead with the project. The toast tends to shatter when I bite into it, but other than the somewhat charred flavor, peaner buttle and marmalade is a delicious combination. I tend to load them pretty good, and keeping the marmalade off my shirt front is always a problem. Don Firth P. S. How the hell can someone burn a peanut butter and jelly sandwich!?? Talent + technique! |

Subject: RE: BS: What do you burn? From: Ed T Date: 07 Nov 11 - 08:07 PM Day old potatoes and carrots, with lots of pepper and a little salt, burn 'em til they stick to the fry pan. Throw in some water and put the top on to steam and loosen up the burned stuff. Scrape it into the mix and add some flaked and cooked haddock. Tastes real good to me. |
Subject: RE: BS: What do you burn? From: Bee-dubya-ell Date: 07 Nov 11 - 09:03 PM I burn firewood. Groceries, I eat, not burn. |
Subject: RE: BS: What do you burn? From: GUEST,Jon Date: 07 Nov 11 - 09:10 PM Toast when I forget the toaster needs two slices of bread in it. For some reason just one gives one side hardly browned and the other side charred. I think it was in part the fault of a pan now long gone but at one time I was quite good at burning custard. It only seems to need a tiny bit burned and the lot tastes fould. As a kid, I boiled milk over a few times but my best childhood effort resulted in a wrecked saucepan. I'd been trying to make acid drops but couldn't get them to set properly so I tried to boil the sugar . mixture a little longer. I managed to go beyond the caramel stage... |
Subject: RE: BS: What do you burn? From: Rapparee Date: 07 Nov 11 - 09:19 PM Powder. Gunpowder...oh, you mean other things. Well, I don't like "blackened" food -- just a fancy way for the cook to burn the meat/veggies/fish. Mostly I burn firewood: some maple, some elm, some I inherited with the house. I also burn daylight. |
Subject: RE: BS: What do you burn? From: GUEST,Jon Date: 07 Nov 11 - 09:20 PM I did know someone who burned more than his food and/or utensils. He made the error of trying to cook chips after a night out in the pub and then falling asleep. Fire Brigade were called out and luckily in this case, he was OK. |
Subject: RE: BS: What do you burn? From: bobad Date: 07 Nov 11 - 09:20 PM Mostly ash and a bit of elm. |
Subject: RE: BS: What do you burn? From: GUEST,999 Date: 07 Nov 11 - 09:22 PM Bread. I love blackened toast with butter. I could, can and do eat bread that is charred beyond recognition. I prefer salted butter on the sometimes flaming toast, but in tight times salt is good enough. Gnu, where the hell do you get these ideas from? If you weren't a Canuck, I'd say you're crazy. |
Subject: RE: BS: What do you burn? From: GUEST,Jon Date: 07 Nov 11 - 09:25 PM Oh and for wood, it varies but when we can get it, beech and ash. I'm not that fond of elm. |

Subject: RE: BS: What do you burn? From: Jim Dixon Date: 08 Nov 11 - 09:08 AM I burn a nice cigar now and then. And sometimes I burn a match to get it started. I don't think of myself as a smoker because I don't inhale, I burn only 2 or 3 cigars a week during the summer, and I quit altogether during the winter. That's because my wife hates the smell, so I only burn them outdoors or occasionally in my car. Anyway, I don't have money to burn. I don't like to burn marijuana because it burns my throat. I'd probably burn incense occasionally, but my wife hates that, too. I only like the stuff that gives off a woody smell like pine or sandalwood. I don't like the flowery smells so much. Why would anyone burn flowers anyway? I'd like to try burning sweetgrass, though. I miss the smell of burning leaves that I remember from my childhood. We can't burn leaves in the city anymore because of anti-burning ordinances. I suppose we could burn them in the country, but why burn them if you don't have to rake them? Anyway, they're good for mulch and compost, so burning would be a waste. I might try burning some leaves in the country anyway just to experience that smell again. Now and then, I like to experience the slow burn that you get from habañero peppers. I've heard that hot peppers are a mild antidepressant, and I think it works for me—somewhat. I need to burn off some fat. |
Subject: RE: BS: What do you burn? From: gnu Date: 08 Nov 11 - 02:55 PM 9... gramma. Annnnd... one Thanksgiving, the pumpkin pie was not perfect but it passed... until Gramma announced she had put in too much milk and ruined it. I think she liked to cook with whiskey - and not in the pie. >;-) |

Subject: RE: BS: What do you burn? From: VirginiaTam Date: 08 Nov 11 - 03:19 PM Put the leftover skin and bones from roast chicken along with a couple of quartered onions or leeks under broiler until dark dark brown and all crackly. Tip all into stock pot with water, herbs and chicken broth and boil down. Strain the broth through sieve and throw away the solid stuff. Best soup and gravy stock ever. |

Subject: RE: BS: What do you burn? From: ClaireBear Date: 08 Nov 11 - 04:59 PM Houses, recently, though to be clear it was my husband who actually did the deed -- I was safe at work, miles away when he tried to light the furnace, which exploded and started the fire. I used to adore blackened shark, but it's been years since I made it. |
Subject: RE: BS: What do you burn? From: VirginiaTam Date: 08 Nov 11 - 05:16 PM Yes Gnu... I used to do 2 chickens once a month. Chicken one, part eaten with meal, rest of meat for lunches. Chicken two picked, meat frozen for future soup, stew, casserole. Carcasses used as above to make broth for soups, stew, gravy or to freeze. Sometimes I would season broth with a little orange zest while the carcass boil was going. Herbs used was a salt free Mrs. Dash herb blend. Great to have that stock in the freezer when the cold and flu season starts in a house full of kids. |
