Subject: Good Appalachian Dulcimer Music From: GUEST,SirCoughsalot Date: 05 Nov 11 - 10:32 PM Hey guys. I wonder if any of you could point me towards some good lap dulcimer music. Anybody besides Jean Ritchie. I already have listened to her a lot and love her stuff. I am looking for something new. I'd prefer American folk songs. |

Subject: RE: Good Appalachian Dulcimer Music From: Janie Date: 06 Nov 11 - 07:38 AM Alan Freeman from Gilmer Co. WV. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jW6DA6C7tq8&feature=related (the above clip is with Dave Bing on Fiddle. I don't know the bass player.) Have you checked out the webpage for Friends of the Mountain Dulcimer? Jim Good, maker of Mastertone dulcimers, from Walton, WV, plays in the traditional style. |
Subject: RE: Good Appalachian Dulcimer Music From: GUEST,Suibhne Astray Date: 06 Nov 11 - 07:43 AM My all time favourite dulcimer album is Times and Traditions for Dulcimer (1976) by the late, great Roger Nicholson with Jake Walton (dulcimers, lute guitar and a sweet-as-a-nut trompette-less symphony style hurdy-gurdy) and Andrew Cronshaw (chord harp and penny whistle) all masterfully captured by Bill Leader in one of the finest folk-productions you'll ever hear. Other Roger Nicholson stuff is fine too, of course... |
Subject: RE: Good Appalachian Dulcimer Music From: Will Fly Date: 06 Nov 11 - 07:50 AM Roger Nicholson is the man, and his death a few months ago was a sad loss. I offer my tribute to the great RN, recorded (very fuzzily) almost 4 years ago: In Good King Arthur's Day The tune is known in the US, among other things, as "In Good Old Colony Days". |

Subject: RE: Good Appalachian Dulcimer Music From: GUEST Date: 06 Nov 11 - 01:29 PM Look for Bing Futch, Stephen Seifert, Butch Ross, and Mark Gilston for a good examples of modern players. Phyliss Gaskins, Betty Smith and Paul Clayton would be good examples of traditional players. |
Subject: RE: Good Appalachian Dulcimer Music From: GUEST,Janet Date: 06 Nov 11 - 01:36 PM All those above, plus Aubrey Atwater Larry Conger Bill Taylor Flora MacDonald Gammon Linda Brockinton ... for a start. If you live in the US, check out the event list at EverythingDulcimer.com for a dulcimer festival near you. Festivals usually include at least one concert that is open to the public. |

Subject: RE: Good Appalachian Dulcimer Music From: GUEST,Arkie Date: 06 Nov 11 - 07:19 PM Many good players listed already. Several others worthy of mention are David Schnaufer, Tull Glazener, and Rob Brereton. These are primarily instrumentalists. Aubrey Atwater, Lorraine Lee, and Kevin Roth are good instrumentalists but also use the dulcimer for vocal accompaniment. Also add Randy Wilkinson, Janita Baker, and Bonnie Carol. |

Subject: RE: Good Appalachian Dulcimer Music From: VirginiaTam Date: 09 Nov 11 - 02:42 AM thank Les, but I only see hammered dulcimer products there. Do they cross over? What I want is A3 A3 E2 A2? I am going to test these one my cheap appalachian dulcie to see if I can approximate baritone. If it works and I like then I may invest in a baritone dulcie. |
Subject: RE: Good Appalachian Dulcimer Music From: Arthur_itus Date: 09 Nov 11 - 05:15 AM Just ask Dizzi. |
Subject: RE: Good Appalachian Dulcimer Music From: VirginiaTam Date: 15 Nov 11 - 12:50 PM I experimented by tuning down to A3A3E2A2. Using my bottle neck slide and I am away. Wheeeee! Love the sound. Have almost mastered Poor Wayfaring Stranger. Interested finding other songs to lay this new blue sound onto. |
Subject: RE: Good Appalachian Dulcimer Music From: foggers Date: 15 Nov 11 - 02:14 PM Hello all I can reveal the identity of the baritone MD player that VT provided a link to.... It's me! My name is Jane Foggin (foggers is my nickname) and I play in a band called the Backyard Buskers. I would second the recommendation of the Ning site Friends of the Mountain Dulcimer. My baritone MD was made for my by my other half; it has quite a long VSL of 31" and we got the strings from NewTone strings; I can't remember to string sizes off hand, but I will try and check. |
Subject: RE: Good Appalachian Dulcimer Music From: Janie Date: 15 Nov 11 - 07:09 PM Neat, a Mudcatter! Great job on Wayfarin' Stranger. |
Subject: RE: Good Appalachian Dulcimer Music From: foggers Date: 16 Nov 11 - 02:21 PM Thanks Janie |
Subject: RE: Good Appalachian Dulcimer Music From: GUEST Date: 16 Nov 11 - 06:24 PM Hi Virginia Missy Strothers has a helpful string gauge calculator on her dulcimer website http://www.strothers.com/string_choice.htm We have used it and found it a good rule of thumb, though they tend to come up a little light. When my OH was making my baritone MD he used a different algorithm and the strings he initially fitted were so heavy and taut I could not fret them! |
Subject: RE: Good Appalachian Dulcimer Music From: foggers Date: 16 Nov 11 - 06:28 PM Oops that was me without me cookie.... let's try the blue clicky again too... HERE |
Subject: RE: Good Appalachian Dulcimer Music From: VirginiaTam Date: 17 Nov 11 - 03:20 AM Thanks Jane. Have to say that with rheumatoid arthritis in hands and wrists, I am loving playing lap dulcie. No pain at all. Only concern is will I get lazy on the other instruments? Next project to work out Lean On Me on the dulcie. |
