Subject: Review: Hot Club Of Cowtown From: irishenglish Date: 28 May 08 - 10:15 AM If anyone gets a chance to, my wife and I saw these guys at the Rodeo Bar in New York the other night. We have been fans for awhile, but this was our first chance to see them live, and what a treat! They are so good together, trading off each other, just enjoying each others playing, lots of encouragement for one another. Elana James is just an amazing, amazing fiddle player-she brought the house down with Orange Blossom Special. Throughout we were sitting right next to Jake Erwin, the upright bass player, who was just incredible-his bass breaks were really hot, as were Whit Smith's guitar licks. As it was Memorial Day weekend, Elana sang a very touching song she arranged from a letter a sadly deceased soldier in Iraq wrote home. They have been on hiatus, so get out and enjoy them now! |

Subject: RE: Review: Hot Club Of Cowtown From: irishenglish Date: 28 May 08 - 10:32 AM I actually don't know SRS-they are Austin based, but their origins are from NYC. I don't know what the Cowtown references. |

Subject: RE: Review: Hot Club Of Cowtown From: Ernest Date: 28 May 08 - 02:00 PM I think the name is a homage to the Django Reinhardt, Stephane Grappelli and the "Hot Club of France" in Paris Never heard HCOC live (I envy you), but have one of their CDs (and have heard another one which I gave away as a gift) and yes: they are really really good!!! Best Ernest |

Subject: RE: Review: Hot Club Of Cowtown From: irishenglish Date: 28 May 08 - 02:05 PM Well, the Hot Club is of course a reference to Django, Grappelli, etc, but I don't know where the Cowtown comes from! The best part is, where we saw them, other than the price of a few drinks and some bar food, this was essentially a free show! Nice warm night, country bar in NYC, couple of beers, some Hot Club, wish you could have been there too Ernest! Regards, IE |

Subject: RE: Review: Hot Club Of Cowtown From: Ernest Date: 28 May 08 - 02:09 PM Wish I could have been there too, IE The "cowtown" part of their name might just be there to indicate western swing - but maybe someone knows more than we do (this is the mudcat after all ;0) For those who haven`t heard of them, here is the Hot Club of Cowtown website Best Ernest |

Subject: RE: Review: Hot Club Of Cowtown From: Def Shepard Date: 28 May 08 - 02:20 PM Apparently they have appeared on "Later" with Jools Holland, now that would have been fun to see. |

Subject: RE: Review: Hot Club Of Cowtown From: irishenglish Date: 28 May 08 - 02:24 PM Yup, saw that clip, it's on youtube! Seems like Jools especially liked them too! |

Subject: RE: Review: Hot Club Of Cowtown From: Def Shepard Date: 28 May 08 - 02:31 PM There's also absolutely incredible versions of Orange Blossom Special and There'll Be Some Changes Made from Jools' Hogmany 2004 programme. |

Subject: RE: Review: Hot Club Of Cowtown From: irishenglish Date: 28 May 08 - 02:40 PM Think that's the one I saw DS. They stretched out Orange Blossom even more the other night, the buildup was so intense, because you knew they were getting to the "recognizable" part. I've have lots of versions of Orange Blossom Special, including the song itself, but the instrumental, especially in the hands of an ace fiddler, well...I can't describe it, its just that damn good. |

Subject: RE: Review: Hot Club Of Cowtown From: glueman Date: 28 May 08 - 03:56 PM They were set to play Holmfirth a couple of years ago but when they arrived at the gig there was some kind of contractual problem so they couldn't play and mooched around town which was a shame. Great band. |

Subject: RE: Review: Hot Club Of Cowtown From: GUEST,Arkie Date: 28 May 08 - 06:48 PM I have a CD of their music and was blown away. Good singing, hot instrumental breaks, real accompaniment and not competition with the vocals, and great repertoire. Even their own compositions fit well with the standards. I thought they has disbanded. Elana toured with Bob Dylan and had her own band for a while. If Hot Club is back together that is a great thing. |
