Subject: Spiers & Boden in Bradford Thur 22nd May From: Fay Date: 14 May 08 - 11:57 AM How do everyone. Just to say that John & Jon are playing at the Love Apple in Bradford next Thursday (22nd May). This is a lovely venue, has had some folk stuff (like the Demon Barber's sessions) but they're not generally great at advertising to the folk world so I thought I'd give it a plug in here. More info at the boys' website: www.spiersandboden.com Polly and I might be there for those who'd care to see us, won't be singing that night, but she is getting good at 'if you're happy and you know it miow like a cat...' Love Fay |

Subject: RE: Spiers & Boden in Bradford Thur 22nd May From: GUEST Date: 14 May 08 - 01:09 PM Just got the new record - Vagabond. What a huge disappointment. I used to be quite a fan but this, to my ears, is a lazy piece of recording. Contrary to Colin Irwin's assessment (the equivalent of Ian Anderson to their Athena!) there is none of the freshness or excitement their earlier work seemed to deliver. They have turned into boring old folkies -I guess the bubble had to burst at some point. It's not even like they've matured musically - Tom Rose must be gutted he signed them. I won't be going to the Union Chapel gig tonight (despite having bought a ticket). |

Subject: RE: Spiers & Boden in Bradford Thur 22nd May From: MoorleyMan Date: 14 May 08 - 05:16 PM What a pity the gig clashes with Ember at the Topic. We don't see enough of those lasses up here in Yorkshire so I know where I'll be -and the Topic has a great new venue (the Irish Club) too... sorry Jon and John, I'll catch you around some other time! |

Subject: RE: Spiers & Boden in Bradford Thur 22nd May From: Joe G Date: 15 May 08 - 08:06 AM I'll be deserting the Topic that night - shame it clashes but I've seen Spiers & Boden a few times and enjoyed them. Haven't seen Ember but heard a track on the radio and wasn't keen - may be better live of course. Good to see the Love Apple putting folk gigs on again and feel I need to suport them but they need to choose another night to avid the clash as the Topic could do wothout having competition! I will be at the Topic tonight though for Cockersdale |

Subject: RE: Spiers & Boden in Bradford Thur 22nd May From: The Borchester Echo Date: 15 May 08 - 01:35 PM The Anonymous Guest who is slagging off Vagabond and who didn't show up at the Union Chapel last night is presumably one and the same as the spectre who was making rather nasty (and inaccurate) remarks about Mr Boden's musical education on the Jim Moray thread yesterday. That he (and it probably is) manages to drag Colin Irwin, Ian Anderson and Athena into one incomprehensible sentence serves only to emphasise the absence of a point to and overabundance of spite in his ramblings. Colin Irwin says nothing of use in his bland and anodyne review to pinpoint where the duo is at musically. For the first time, this is something of a concept album on the theme of vagrancy (or at least deviation from the norms of 'polite society'). Whether or not this actually works on a commercial basis remains, obviously, to be seen but the packaging is brilliant and the choice of song versions and juxtaposition of tunes works well. I saw and heard this myself last night at the Union Chapel (or at least as much as I could determine, the sound being at the venue's accustomed mediocre level. Pity so much has been spent on restoration of the building but not a lot done about the acoustics. Doubtless this Pest Of A Guest will try and disagree but it seems to me that kicking up a fuss about sloppy uninformative reviewing and lack of attention to sound quality are far more crucial than spite-filled that the king's clothes are out of fashion and worn out. I have to say I saw and heard no signs of bursting bubbles at last night's launch. |

Subject: RE: Spiers & Boden in Bradford Thur 22nd May From: GUEST,Guest Date: 15 May 08 - 05:43 PM I'd happily take bad quality sound over no sound at all! This said from a wistful fan over the pond. Anyone within earshot of the boys ... could you tell them we'd love a visit in the US and Canada. Cheers! |
