Subject: BS: Film jobs From: irishenglish Date: 08 May 08 - 08:03 PM Does anyone know, generally speaking what the job title is for those people who choose the music for soundtracks? I'm not talking about composers of film scores, be it John Williams or Elton John, etc. I know sometimes a director might have an idea of specific songs he might use, but are there people who consult with filmakers and say, oh, I know exactly what kind of piece you need here. |

Subject: RE: BS: Film jobs From: Emma B Date: 08 May 08 - 08:04 PM Well I don't know about the folks who choose the music but I'm always impressed by the folks who choose the location - I'd like that job :) |

Subject: RE: BS: Film jobs From: GUEST,Jack the Sailor Date: 08 May 08 - 08:06 PM That would likely be Producer work. There are a lots of producers jobs. I think that generally the Director would ask for certain songs and types of songs and producers would go out and negotiate the rights. |

Subject: RE: BS: Film jobs From: heric Date: 08 May 08 - 10:03 PM I think the specific answer is music supervisor, although there will be others such as music editors, and I'm sure no one has free reign. I paid attention to this recently because I watched a film I didn't like much except for the music. Starting Out in the Evening it is called. It had music supervisor Linda Cohen and music editor Brian Bulman. |

Subject: RE: BS: Film jobs From: heric Date: 08 May 08 - 10:13 PM oh now you've got me started. I plugged Cohen into hollywood.com and she comes up mostly as Music Supervisor, but also as Music Execcutive, Music Coordinator, and rarely as Music Consultant. (Turns out she was Supervisor on No Country, There Will Be Blood, and several other notables.) |

Subject: RE: BS: Film jobs From: Doug Chadwick Date: 09 May 08 - 06:14 AM Lots of film jobs have odd names - grip, key grip, best boy, dolly grip... Can anyone explain what jobs these people do? "Best boy" has always intrigued me. DC |

Subject: RE: BS: Film jobs From: Liz the Squeak Date: 09 May 08 - 06:33 AM The grip is the bloke wot holds the camera. The Dolly is that little track that the camera rolls along to get moving shots. The bloke on the camera on the track is therefore the Dolly Grip. And you thought it was a porn star. The Best Boy is not the most prettily endowed - he's the gaffer's first assistant and the term is older than the film industry - like Best Man - he was the most trusted servant or apprentice and so got all the responsible jobs. The Gaffer is usually the chief of the Lighting crew or electricians. They don't touch cameras, only lighting rigs and electrics. Key Grip is the chief of the Grips - they run the cameras and don't touch the lighting rigs or electrics. Key Grip is the head honcho, top dog, manager of all the Grip team. Sometimes he gets a Best Boy too. Boring, but essentially correct. LTS |

Subject: RE: BS: Film jobs From: Liz the Squeak Date: 09 May 08 - 11:49 AM And I a mere child of 18.... Ah, those were the days. Do you know, I still don't remember his surname - he lived on a chicken farm and was known as 'Chris Chickens'. He also held a diving certificate so got to be Underwater Gaffer when Vodaphone (remember them?) did a commercial at a local beach. I'm off to slip into a reverie and try to remember his damned name!! LTS |
