Subject: She moved through the fair - repeats? From: Phil Edwards Date: 08 May 08 - 05:06 PM I've been checking through old threads on this song, and I realise I've been singing it all wrong... or at least all differently. I've been singing all four verses, but using verse 2 as a repeat - like so: My young love... She stepped... The people... She stepped... Last night... She stepped... It seems to work, but I'm slightly startled to realise that I made up this arrangement myself - I thought I was copying the way it was supposed to be done. Does anyone else do it like this? |

Subject: RE: She moved through the fair - repeats? From: GUEST,Suffolk Miracle Date: 09 May 08 - 09:38 AM The question is why do you repeat it? A)You think it works that way B) You don't like a song to be that short. I can't argue with A). But if it's a case of B) consider that if a song is well sung, short can be good. And failing that, this song in particular has lots more verses: I once loved a young girl... It's deeply I loved her... According to promise... Farewell to you Molly... ...to mention just the ones I know. Any of these might be considered as an alternative to repetition. |

Subject: RE: She moved through the fair - repeats? From: Phil Edwards Date: 09 May 08 - 10:36 AM Certainly not B) - short is fine (I occasionally do an unaccompanied version of Nick Drake's "Which will", which is not only short but unusually quiet - cough and you'd miss it). It's mostly A), but partly C) I thought that was how *everyone* did it ...so the realisation that in fact nobody(?) does it like that has made me feel a bit self-conscious. |
