Subject: BS: UK radio: Michael Ball's Sunday Brunch From: Folk Form # 1 Date: 27 Apr 08 - 07:06 AM Has anyone in the UK listened to Michael Ball's Sunday Brunch on Radio TV. This takes the place Michael Parkinson's radio show and follows a similiar format: ie. music, guest review of the papers, Hilary Oliver's review of films, radio and TV and then in the second hour, an interview with a guest. Similiar, but with a difference. The difference is that Michael Ball is a professional DJ: talks over the beginning of records, talks without saying anything interesting, laughs while he talks: in other words, he is as irritating as hell and drives me bonkers. There is more. He allows members of the public to ring in and request a record. The record they choose is always sentimental pap and the "Chat" between the caller and Ball is asinine. To put it bluntly, Ball has taken a good format and ruined it totally. Well, not totally. The reviews, especially Hilary Oliver, are good; but it is him - he ruins it. Come back Parky. We need you. |

Subject: RE: BS: UK radio: Michael Ball's Sunday Brunch From: Acorn4 Date: 27 Apr 08 - 08:04 AM This seems to be a trend in radio these days. Radio Leicester recently sacked Bill Maynard and cut down the time of John Florance, who were the two presenters with the most colourful personalities. Local radio seems to be drifting towards inane patronising clack. |

Subject: RE: BS: UK radio: Michael Ball's Sunday Brunch From: Folk Form # 1 Date: 27 Apr 08 - 09:20 AM "Has anyone in the UK listened to Michael Ball's Sunday Brunch on Radio TV." I meant to say Radio 2, not Radio TV. My apologies. |

That ginger tosser Chris Evans is one of the worst culprits. The problem seems to be DJs who love their own voices more than they love the music. |

Subject: RE: BS: UK radio: Michael Ball's Sunday Brunch From: GUEST,John from Kemsing Date: 27 Apr 08 - 04:48 PM I have much respect for Michael Ball and what he has achieved in his singing career and can put up with any foibles he demonstrates in his presentation although I hope someone advises him of this thread and he takes it on board. I, like BACKWOODSMAN, also dislike the tasteless C.Evans and would love to see whoever proposed such an appointment at the BBC removed or sent for counselling. |

He has a genuine love of the industry and comes across as charming and a good humoured host. The chat with the member have been quick and have turned up some interesting tracks I had not heard before. Interviews with the guests have been relaxed and still informative. I think we must be hearing different shows granted he did talk over the into of Heroes on Sunday but this has not been the norm. He has hardly talked over the beginings or endings of the tracks he's played listen to Steve Wright and then compare the times it's done. Oh and Gillian Reynolds is much better than Hilary Oliver. |

Subject: RE: BS: UK radio: Michael Ball's Sunday Brunch From: GUEST Date: 29 Apr 08 - 09:22 PM That should obviously read "Chats with the member of the public have turned up some interesting tracks" Sorry changed my sentence structure and deleted out to much :-) |

Subject: RE: BS: UK radio: Michael Ball's Sunday Brunch From: Jeanie Date: 30 Apr 08 - 03:52 AM I listened to the first edition of the programme a few weeks ago because I wanted to hear the interview with Judi Dench. I haven't managed to listen to it since. He announced on that first programme that people could email suggestions for little-heard tracks and the reason for their choice, to be then called up to talk about them on the radio. I sent mine in - not "sentimental pap" - which explains why they've not contacted me, then ! Are people picking songs and saying things like they do on that awful, sickly "Love Songs" programme ? A much better bet, I reckon, is Elaine Paige's programme on Sunday afternoons - she does play all the songs right through, doesn't talk over them, and has some really interesting guests and conversations. You have to be fond of show tunes, though, to enjoy that programme, because that is what you get. Completely different, but another good show, if you don't know about it, is Russell Brand on Saturday nights. Completely loopy but lovely. - jeanie |

Subject: RE: BS: UK radio: Michael Ball's Sunday Brunch From: GUEST Date: 30 Apr 08 - 04:30 PM Blimey give em chance there's only been 4 shows lol!! So far there's been a Supertramp, ABBA, ELO and Rod Stewart track. I can't say I'd heard any of them before, so in that respect the feature works well. Nothing over sentimental either certainly not in 'Love Songs' mode. Elaine Paige's show is ok music wise but she I'm not a fan of her presenting style myself. Sunday is really the only day I get to listen to alot of radio in one go although did I catch half hour of Dermot O'Leary the other weekend. |

Subject: RE: BS: UK radio: Michael Ball's Sunday Brunch From: Folk Form # 1 Date: 04 May 08 - 07:52 AM It is just finishing on the radio and I have refused to listen to a single second of it. That'll teach them! |

Subject: RE: BS: UK radio: Michael Ball's Sunday Brunch From: GUEST Date: 24 Jun 08 - 02:13 AM Great show on Sunday again. I think Michael Ball has settled in well to this time slot The show is brighter, good humoured, conversations with guest relaxed and informative. The talking over the intro's is certainly no worse and much much less often than some other presenters I could name. Looking forward to hearing the Dustin Hoffman interview this week. Much prefer Gillian Reynolds to Hilary Oliver myself. |
